I was in Marines. We would lay on the floor under the bunk. The lights were always overhead. You can scoot back and be invisible if you don't move or breathe too loud. The NCO just walks by - looks at the perfectly made bunk and doesn't miss a step. 6:42 I beat 11 guys in a row. I have long arms, great reach. They went down before they could throw. The DI kept sending them. #12 was a little guy who simply bumped me over, I was totally exhausted and could not hold the pugil stick up to defend myself. Flashbacks from watching this scene. This show was well cast. No one could play Gomer besides Jim Neighbors and Frank Sutton was good as Sgt. Carter. The others were good too.

This reminds me of a "Beetle Bailey" comic strip that showed a skunk walking underneath a tree. The next panel showed Beetle, Sarge, and all the others up in the tree, and Sarge said, "It saddens me to think one skunk is equal to forty soldiers!" It's amazing how such a small and relatively harmless creature can strike so much fear into a person!

My platoon did not have a Gomer Pyle. But we did have a fat guy like the one in full metal jacket. He was always getting himself and the platoon in trouble he even got caught with a donut 🍩. The only difference is he did not shoot the drill instructor. I was platoon 3035 MCRD California 1992

Today is my birthday and I need this message more than ever.

3 months later, Harry Phillips was sent to Vietnam. Shortly after arriving, Harry was killed by friendly fire.

"Learn" was not backwoods lingo, it was slang for the time. i.e. someone gets bit by a snake while messing with the snake, someone in the 50's would say "That'll learn em!" instead of "That'll teach em."
