Swarmed By Thousands of Butterflies on Sacajawea Peak in the Wallowas Oregon
Standing on the summit of Sacajawea Peak in in the Wallowa Mountains in Eastern Oregon, my only company was thousands of butterflies! It was surreal as they all fluttered about and almost distracted me from the incredible views that I went up there for.
The hike to Sacajawea Peak via Ice Lake and The Matterhorn is a ~22 mile trip with 6500 feet of elevation gain.

      Hey! This time took us 5 hours 12 minutes elapsed time that day. We did have a couple of longer breaks in the day, but I would say this is probably still a good estimate for both peaks. Have fun!

    Thanks for the video. This peak has been taunting me for far too long and i want to climb it this winter. I am wondering, were there any obsticals to get to where you parked, like gates or sand pits? Ive read online that one road to get to the optimal parking has those to pass through so 4wd is recommended. Any information on the road would be appreciated :)

    • @OptimisticProminence
      @OptimisticProminence Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for checking it out, I hope the information is helpful with your climb! It is definitely not a small undertaking, but it is also definitely doable. In the description, I have included a link for the route, which includes not just the hiking route but also the driving route. I have tried many different "roads" to get to the parking area and the route I included on the map is the only way that has no gates. There were definitely some sandy areas and they can get pretty soft, but as long as it is dry you shouldn't need 4WD (although I always like having the confidence of AWD). I would recommend high clearance though - something like an Outback or Rav4 should be fine. Let me know if you have any more questions, and let me know when you make it to the top!

    curious about the manzanita and at what point you started to encounter it. Seems like it went at least half way up from when you started going up the ridge-line but when did it first start to get thick?

    • @OptimisticProminence
      @OptimisticProminence Před 11 měsíci

      The manzanita was thick off and on pretty much immediately once we left the trail. It was pretty patchy, so we had periods of pretty thick (but still passable) followed by wide open areas. Once we were about 400 vertical feet from the summit, it opened up completely. The ridge is definitely the way to go though, going through the wash was brutal.

    Is the prominence the elevation gain of the trail?

    • @OptimisticProminence
      @OptimisticProminence Před rokem

      That's a great question! Sometimes it is similar, especially in places like the Cascades, but often it does not correlate. Prominence is actually a measure of how much taller a mountain is than those around it. Technically, it is the difference between it's own summit elevation and the elevation of the lowest point on the highest ridge between itself and the next highest mountain. Basically, if you were going to walk from one mountain to it's parent, it would be the least elevation loss possible before going back uphill. Check out en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topographic_prominence for a more thorough description! Cheers!

    We enjoyed watching! One of our fav hikes in Bend. Looks like we may need to take a trip there and vlog sometime. Loving the new maps integration and graphics

    The mountain has crazy spiritual presence also. I’ve done psychedelic at the base of the south side of the mountain, and I’ve seen some crazy stuff there that wasn’t hallucinations 😂

    Very nice and very cool on southern most point. I have been to the southern most point in the continental US, but you got me beat😊

      I've been down to the Florida Keys, but I actually haven't made it all the way down to the southernmost continental point yet! Still, I think an argument could be made for Guam...

    Looks like an awesome hike! Definitely adding to our list. Haha at the end, “are you going to be in it or not.” That’s a Tim moment right there

      It is such a fun hike! If you end up down there and are up for a bigger adventure, doing the entire Superstition Ridgeline trail is also one of my favorites! Haha yeah Kristine for some reason never thinks she is in the shot...🙄

      It was a ton of fun! Definitely a little bit of a change from trying to get as far away from sea level as possible.
