Probably because welding tutors at school give out to you for anything but a straight push. The don’t like Es or Cs etc. I use this technique from time to time and it does give a good weld without undercut.

I feel like with steel that heavy you should be using dual shield instead of solid wire MIG.

No.need for the side to side. Just keep ya puddle and go doenhill. Weld is kinda wide. I was always told a weld shoul be 1/4 wide.

I've always ran 7018 like that for over 30 years.

It kind of makes me grit my teeth bro I would have ran just a straight pass for the root and then waved on my 2nd pass I'm scared of lack of complete fusion

I'll have you know , that all the welds holding the attachment points to the frame of a large loader ( for almond harvesting ) are done low and slow using this technique, machine turned down to around 18 with a low wire speed . Time consuming but they'll never break .
