Inflatable human powered aircraft "Reluctant Phoenix" early demonstarations.

This is an 8mm film of the early demontrations of the inflatable human powered aircraft named Reluctant Phoenix designed by the late Dan Perkins who worked at RAE Cardington. The film was taken at Hampstead London in the mid to late 70s. Onlookers were friends. Dan's widow bequethed the airvcraft to me after Dan sadly passed away. Dan was a genius at inflatable structuires and inflatable wings ...

An interpretation of this beautiful song which has been peformed by so many musicians around the world.
Round Midnight.

I've been drawn to the music of the great Hamza El Din, and as I approached the piano today I started experimenting in the rhythm of his music, it ended up as an interpretaion of Thelonious Monk's beautiful composition "Round Midnight"; therefore I took the liberty of naming this interpretation " Round Midnight, Eastern Time", a fusion.

When I was 11 years old my parents took our family on a trip around the world. As airliners had shorter range in those day, starting from Hong Kong we had to hop from island to island to reach some destinations. Our first stop was Honolulu, then to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, London and Edinburgh, Paris and finally Rome, then back to home. It is amazing that these films have survived ...

Mike Truelove flies Airglow 1 km in the 1st Icarus Cup competition hosted by Lasham airfield in 2012. This is a new version of the video I posted several years ago. The Icarus Cup has since been running yearly since 2012 (baring 2020 due to Covid 19). Airglow, first flown in 1986, has been competing successfully and is now being refurbished and improved.
Beautiful. Rivals Bill Evans at his best.
I think the filming was done in the 60s instead of 50s because many people in the movie clips is noted wear rubber sandals. If in 50s, wooden sandals are more common.
What did it weigh ?
From records, it weighed 104kg. The weight changed as we made alterations and so did not weigh it constantly as we had to make constant changes and tests. Nothing new is that easy, it was hard work, but we didn't mind it then as we were much younger. In 2018 in Switzerland I learnt that Solar One was one of the inspirations for the round-the-world solar aircraft, so it did have an effect. Thanks for your interest.
@@insultantable ...thanks for your answer Fred.
Film thin solar cells are now 37 % efficient at best.
What was the empty weight ?

Thank you for posting
First!:) Wow that is really something! Thanks.
I’d like to see one of these built using Coanda effect, perhaps a couple of box bellows to pump the air over the leading edge. Propellers are inefficient at propelling aircraft forward, when what is really needed is the air to move over the upper surface of the wing. Forward motion would be a side effect. I notice too, that some battery powered leaf-blowers have about the same “horse power” as a man, and the velocity of air coming out the nozzle is in excess of 100kph. Might not need such extreme and exotic engineering for the wings.
It is supposed to be so quiet, but seems so loud...
Nice

Your playing is very soul healing, truly penetrating, Thank you 🙏
Thank you for your kind remarks, that was 8 years ago. I try to do justice to each piece and to bring out something new hidden in it, that does a lot for the soul when it can be achieved. I started at 10 and I'm now 85 and still trying, the piano might be about my age, ha! Take care.
Music speaks to my heart. Wonderful instrument meeting a gorgeous player
Thank youy Fortissimomo, you are very kind. Music does indeed speak to the heart. When I play the piano it also speaks from the heart, not easy to achieve but I'm always trying to improve.
And if you use, togheter, the arms for obtains force? No one thought about, okay?

beautiful
Well done and tried. Mammals and birds have one important distinction in their respiratoy systems and skeletal structures. Birds have a more complex respiratory system not just lungs, diaphragm and intercostal muscles like mammals but also have multiple air sacs and more than double the oxygen transport rate because the act of flying itself demands for a higher metabolic rate and tissue oxygen demand . Most of the human powered flights cannot last more than 20 seconds because that is the limit of anaerobic metabolism ( like 100m/200m runners) our most powerful muscles are in our lower limbs and we can only do a measly 20MPH whilst flying birds have their strongest pectoral muscles planted onto the "Keel" planted onto their sternums which are supplied with enough oxygen, they have lighter structures. Therefore prolonged self powered flight was never intended by the Maker for us
Thank you for your comment, do you realise that Bryan Allen crossed the English Channel in 1979 in a human powered aircraft the Gossamer Condor? Watch: czcams.com/video/qfENcznI8e0/video.html

This really blew me away. It meant a lot to me. And rather than bore you with my story, lets just say we are kindred spirits, thank you.
Impressive
Absolutely wonderful. I'm currently working on and nearly ready to fly a 4.6meter solar plane with 6 electric motors and solar cells on the wing, fuselage, and horizontal stab. This is very inspiring. thanks.

Thank you for your generous complement, I was about 19 years old when I made the documentary, it is a good thing that Kodachrome has kept itscolour all these years. I'd be please to help out.

Thanks for sharing!
These are very valuable and rare informative footage film shot showing the life of Hong Kong People in the late fifties Though limited by the low resolution of photographic equipment , Kodakcrome film was then the best fine movie film All these brings back Unforgettable Memories of my happy childhood. I was at a boarding school in Bedford in the 1960s. Sometimes I would escape and cycle over to Cardington to watch the indoor model flying. It must have been 1964 when I witnessed a 46 minute flight. You were only allowed to watch from the hangar walls because of the possibility of human created thermals! Ha! Freddie To. He was also into Man Powered Aircraft. He must have come up to Warton to see Roger Hardy's MPA and to visit BAe, maybe 1983. I was in the Warton Advanced Projects Office and remember taking him to the twin dome air combat simulator. We put Freddie in the cockpit and I stood on the low parapet to advise him. It was very realistic and when he did a rapid rolling manoeuvre I fell off my perch!
What is unique looking aircraft.

Hello Sir, Thank you for your words of support. It is so painful to lose your child. I only have one daughter and two grandsons. You tell me that your children live and work in Lausanne. They are therefore not very far from my place of residence (80km). I am very close to the Swiss border to Geneva in a small village on the edge of Lake Geneva. My husband and I try not to think too much about the painful things in life. My husband goes fishing on Lake Geneva, and I play the piano. The upright piano on which I play is very good, but it is difficult on an upright to get pianissimos in the back of the key like on a grand piano. This is the only downside. The important thing is to play and it's still a great pleasure that prevents me from thinking too much. Also take care of yourself and continue to improvise and share these so romantic melodies with us. Friendships Danielle
Hello Danielle, my daughter works for WHO in Geneva but has been working from home since Covid. If you were on Facebook we could communicate more easily. I am still very active in what I am involved with and that is a blessing but can also be stressful. You take care and be safe. Fred.
Hello Fred, I had to return to the store the IBACH piano from 1988 that I had for some time and that I had told you about. I was quite happy with it, but found that there were about a hundred holes in the belt of the piano. These holes were made by an insect called VRILLETTE, which is found on the Breton coast and in England, in wetlands. The store took over the piano and as they had no other valid grand piano, they offered me two new C. Bechstein upright pianos: one from 116 and another from 124. I accepted. I had no choice. I will therefore resell these 2 pianos or find another dealer who agrees to exchange these new pianos for a used grand piano. The research is not going to be easy. We are confined in France until May 2. In the meantime, I can play on one of the two upright pianos: the 124. it's a good piano but despite the latest technical improvements in recent years, it remains an upright piano with its limits. The IBACH piano that I kept for a while felt quite supple and quite heavy at the same time. It seems contradictory but I cannot express this particularity of touching. I will continue my research and I am moving towards a STEINWAY o180 or an AUGUST FORSTER on occasion. what a waste of time. The important thing is still to play at all costs, even on a piano that I don't like enough. I am disappointed anyway, and I try to stay positive. I have to keep my spirits up because I lost my 54 year old daughter a year ago. The piano allows me to forget the hard times of life a little. Your piano sounds beautiful but I understand your regret at not being able to play on the STEINWAY piano that you had before. And also keep recording, because you improvise so well and with a lot of romanticism. It is a pleasure to listen to you. Friendships. Danielle
I'm so sad to hear about yor daughter, my children live and work in Lausanne in Switzerland, they both speak french. My daughter is 51 and so I can relate to your sad news. I gathered from your YouTuvbe site that you were French already. I have some close friends in France and only just visited Bordeaux in January 2020 just when the first covid carriers reached Bordeaux, I was visiting Bordeaux university. I left in a hurry. You are so right about playing on an upright, my grandchildren have a Steinway upright , it does sound quite good compared to others. Do take care as I know what your is to your life. I too have lost many close friends around me in the last years, and just today I was told another lost her life to cancer early this morning. It's a beautiful world but at the same time a cruel one. My songs do have some origins from people that I have lost. You take care and keep enjoying music you make.
Good evening Sir, I see that the work on your piano is finished. I hope you like its sound. I recognize the personality of the IBACH brand, and I find that your piano projects brighter sounds, full of charm and always with romanticism. Thank you for your recordings. Your improvisations are always so beautiful. best regards Danielle Drude
Hello Danielle again. It was time that I tried to record some more of songs that I love so much. It dawned on me that what you said was so true about the Ibach sound. How I wish though that I had kept the Steinway that I inherited from my father; an instrument like a Steinway grand is so much more responsive to touch and sound so much richer, one can squeeze so much emotion out of those much more expensive pianos. Wherever I travel I make my way into piano stores and head for the great pianos trying them all out. I hope you are enjoying your piano and playing often, there is such satisfaction in being able to make music, any music. I uploaded a recording I made this morning.."Stella by Starlight", it's full of mistakes etc. but I decided that one does not have to be perfect. My piano tuner came a few months ago and did what he could to improve the Ibach, he told me that the piano had been set up with a very light touch. There we are Danielle, I hope you are well and safe.
Its wings take a large area.
