Building a Volvo B230 16-Valve Turbo Engine: Part 1
I think this is technically the second episode of what I hope will be a cohesive series about my Volvo 142 Turbo project. In this video, we'll assemble the B230 bottom end that I've had in my garage for a couple years. It's getting lots of shiny, upgraded parts that should make for a durable path to a 400 horsepower Volvo.

I've made a couple videos of this trail for the channel, but never in the snow. This is just a short video of a trip up to the top in my Discovery. Hopefully the forecast is accurate and we get some real snow soon. If and when that happens, I'll go do my best to get stuck.

Shannon and I checked out a new zone in Lane Country, Oregon. Finding some rocks to slide around on was cool, but finding dozens of bottles and cans was not. People need to do better. Anyway, these trails (tracks if you're Australian) weren't bad, but I'd say they were close to the limit of what I'd want to do with 33" tires. I guess the Disco needs 40s...

    .047 - .018' = .019'. Danger danger! You need .04' per 1000rpm squish minimum, 0.05' is safer so you need at least 0.032' for 8000rpm. I'd be looking at a thicker cometic hg to get the clearance given the 16v likes to rev.

      Ok this is good info! So you’re saying I’m at risk of the piston hitting the head itself, not even just the valves?

    • @tfrasca142
      @tfrasca142 Před 11 dny

      Also also, it looks like the math is wrong. .047-.018=.029. That's still not enough for 8k given your formula, but at least it's closer to being safe for 7k. Seems like I should be looking at an MLS gasket around .5? Sorry for the rapid fire replies, just trying to figure this out. Would you use stock bolts with an MLS gasket? I don't want to use the ARP studs I have, as I've heard they lose clamp load over time because the washers dig into the aluminum head surface, and they don't have the right elasticity for aluminum expansion.

    Im sure its a troll, BUT :) the split washers is a locking washer tha is designed to bite int the contact surface and henc locks it in place. if you place to the contact surface, it will bit into that surface and ruin the pain/powder coating. So thats why there is a flat washer for it to bite into. :)

And looking at the state of you, they looked quite good. So maybe it was gasket sealer. Top tip. keep them well sealed and well-greased. That will extend the life of the shafts and members.
