But since he is not proactive with his attack, he lets the opponent control the point and reacts to it, and gets himself in way more trouble than necessary.
Monfils hasn't had much success against Nadal... but when he has, he's gotten him in Doha. Twice. Here and also back in 2009. The pattern in both was that the game plan was rock solid, playing with pace and taking Nadal out of position with side to side offense and coming to the net to close it out. This match was simply Monfils redlining his game. Obviously if you smack balls onto the lines you’ll beat anyone. It’s like when de Minaur almost beat Rafa earlier this year by smacking every ball much harder than he normally does. It’s not a sustainable game plan, but maybe it’ll get you a win sometimes. I wish Monfils played more risky tennis, but it’s just not how he was raised to play I guess.
