      +Silvershock Nicktail Agreed. The Deathstar is used as a spaceship. Instead of being in orbit about a planet or placed in a fixed location, as is the definition for a space station, the Deathstar moves about like a cargo ship. So... Interstellar should definitely have been included at at least been #3. Either that, or remove the Deathstar and make Space Station V the #1... which would have made sense. It is the most realistic looking one of all.

      It's funny that they mentioned the rotation for artificial gravity for 2001's station while completely ignoring the fact that in B5 even human ships utilise rotation for gravity in living spaces. It's not as overt that B5 itself does it because it's 5 miles long and probably about half a mile in diameter that's a very large mass turning so it looks incredibly slow..

    Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future and it changed us. It taught us that we have to create the future or others will do it for us. It showed us that we have to care for one another, because if we don't, who will? And that true strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely places. Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope, that there can always be new beginnings. Even for people like us.

    As a massive Star Wars fan, I feel like I have to point out that the Death Star should be disqualified. According to your system, any station that doubles as a starship isn't included. According to the in universe classification system, any spacecraft equipped with engines and a hyperdrive (as the death stars were) is a starship. Therefore, Space Station V wins by default.

    • @draconuuse9731
      @draconuuse9731 Před 4 lety

      @Thelondonbadger While not to everyones taste. It most definitely is Sci-Fi in the same way that star wars is. Both are basically about space wizards that do the impossible. Neither are considered hard Sci-Fi like Star Trek, Battlestar, or many other productions featured in this video. But just because they lean heavily on fantasy elements does not discount the science fiction portion of their genre. That would be like saying aliens doesn't count because it is a horror flick. Or Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is only a comedy.
      It is actually difficult to find a production that only fits into one genre. Can't think of any I have ever watched, read, or played. The idea honestly sounds quite boring. You couldn't even satirize just one genre because that would require at least 2 genres at minimum.

    • @draconuuse9731
      @draconuuse9731 Před 4 lety

      @Thelondonbadger Actually can't discount the argument about LotR. Its very true. But again. Why can it not be sci-fi. Yes the screwdriver has what seems to be limitless potential. The rules of the whovian universe are very much nonsensical. But there are rules and scientific principles at work within the series. No matter how nonsensical they may be. The villains of the week trope is one used by tv shows and movies for years. Including shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, and countless others. Besides standouts like the Borg, they generally have some evil scheme that is far more complicated than necessary. They monologue. They do something stupid. They lose. It is trope because so many people use it.
      Back to sci-fi. Based on Websters Dictionary:
      -fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component
      Fantasy
      -imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters
      Both Star Trek and Dr. Who follow both these definitions. They each lean further to either side. Star trek does have strange settings and grotesque characters throughout all iterations. And Dr. Who most definitely has a large scientific factor as an essential orienting component. It doesn't matter that it is not as grounded in reality as many other sci-fi shows, books, or games.
      The idea that just because something is not your cup of tea doesn't change the genre. It just means that you may not like it. No need to attack it for not fitting into your view of how something should be categorized.

    • @draconuuse9731
      @draconuuse9731 Před 4 lety

      @Thelondonbadger So I took the definition directly related to the actual art of fantasy writing. You took the definition of the mental process of fantasy. Two separate, though connected meanings.
      I have not been arguing that Dr. Who is 'pure' science fiction in the same vein as Star Trek, Battlestar, Babylon, etc. That would be quite stupid to say. Dr. Who is a science fiction fantasy. The argument that it is only fantasy is just as stupid. To disregard all the science used in the show off hand just because it is not as rigid and unloving as other shows is fallacy. Star Trek falls into this same category time after time. They disregard established rules and laws of science in their universe on a whim of the writers. Babylon 5 did this on occasion. So did Stargate, Farscape, X-Files, Quantum leap, and many others.
      If you want to talk about the space magic that cannot be explained.
      Star Trek(Q is the most egregious but not the only one by far)
      Babylon 5(The Greys, the shadows, and the psi core)
      Stargate(Ascended beings and all their shenanigans)
      Firefly(River and her weird powers)
      Where is the line. Yes Dr. Who is most definitely more fantasy than Sci-Fi. But science fiction is still a major focus of the show. Even though the writers love there convoluted science with more loop holes than basket of curly cue fries. It is still a form of science with rules that can be followed if you pay attention.
      There is a reason that most book stores combine their sci-fi and fantasy sections into one. It is because the line between the two is so arbitrary and can be quite interchangeable. Some high fantasy books have a lot of DNA from science fiction with how much they analyze the world and how it works. While other futuristic science fiction books will have a more fantastical look at the galaxy.
      With the outlook you look at Dr. Who with, many of the stories considered as some of the best of science fiction would not be able to fit in that genre if you looked at them with the same lens. Just because a piece of work is not 'pure' science fiction does not lesson the fact it is still science fiction.

    According to the novel, the space station in 2001 (Space Station V) simulated an artificial gravity of 1/3 that of Earth, which is not that of the Moon (1/6 G). The reason being that since it was a stopover from the Earth to the Moon it gave occupants a chance to slowly adapt from a full 1G to 1/6 G or vice versa.

      +4life4win I was wanting to say the same thing and was looking to see if anyone else thought the same about those two. Also, the criteria switches throughout the top ten. What makes something "top"? That it is a "good" (functionally) station? Then 2001 gets an honorable mention for rotation and Babylon 5 moves into the top two at least. Is it that it is "iconic"? Then 2001 is back and gets a promotion and several others drop off the list making this a top 7 at best. Is it that it is an actual attempt at Science Fiction? Then the cartoons drop off the list (if they weren't gone already). I've typed too much. One last thought about Power Rangers and Death Star... Space stations are relatively stationary...come on, it's right there in the word itself. They orbit stuff and pretty much stay there in orbit. You can find them cause they are NOT moving around much.

      +Jerod Haskins Agreed. There have been many lists about sci-fi characters or technology that are total nightmares BECAUSE of the definitions that they set up. Cyborgs and Giant robots list are few to be named, that made my blood boil. They butchered many great lists in order to fit those, that technically aren't belonging there.

      +4life4win I agree and as far as i'm concern the Death Star is in a cathegory all by itself. Its a small moon you can't put it with sations 5-10-20 miles long even. And cartoons you loose me.... Its 3D , movies and well define and with people or nothing. Leave the comics out of it. I've always been a purist with that form. A cartoon is a cartoon is a cartoons. And the DS9 is actually smaller than most of the federation huge station where the Starship can enter whole. Very bad list and not well reaserched IMO.

      +4life4win Incase you didn't know ALL REAL space stations actually have a means to move by them self by releasing large amounts of gas to cause two forces to push against one another effectively making any space station able to adjust it's position so technically if the space stations on this list cannot move on their own then lets face it they're just space junk!

    I don't agree with #1 Death Star. A space station is one that stays in orbit. The Death Star was mobile. And, we don't see anything about the design. Somehow, it carries a bunch of small ships. Somehow, it has a planet destroying weapon. A spherical shape makes sense for structural integrity, but since all other ships in the movies have what look like some sort of rocket-type propulsion, and there are no rockets visible anywhere on the Death Star - it's a no-go.
    Your #2 should be #1.

      Curious... Did you actually watch the entire series - in order? Judging this series from just a few episodes is like deciding how good a novel is from reading only a few random pages. Babylon 5 remains one of, if not the best sci-fi series because it was written so well, and almost all by one author. He planned out the entire 5 years ahead of time and included a myriad of story arcs that ranged in scale from personal stories of individuals to epochal history spanning millions of years. These story arcs also ranged in length from episodic arcs to ones that took literally years to pan out, with some of the most satisfying pay-offs you'll ever see. Multi-dimensional characters who change as a result of their decisions and events that occur around them. I encourage you and anyone who hasn't seen this series to give it the time it deserves. Start with Season 1 Ep 1 and watch every episode. Is it perfect? Of course not. Nothing is. But it really is one of the very best series. Deep Space 9 owes much of its success and improvement to Babylon 5. Any similarities you find are rooted in B5, not the other way around. And I'm glad. Because of B5, DS9 became the best of the Star Trek series, which up till then were mostly narrowly episodic. The breadth and scope of B5's storytelling was picked up by DS9. B5 won two Hugo Awards and was nominated for more. It has earned the respect of anyone with the patience to experience it as it was designed to be - a novel for television.

    Usually you guys and gals are spot on, but this is one GIANT mistake: this list is a joke without the incredible Space Dock from the Star Trek franchise. This thing is big enough to house multiple star ships INSIDE of it, that alone should have been enough to make this list as #2. Come on people, your better than this!

    Nope. Babylon 5 is number 1. That is my informed opinion. But that is also based on my enjoyment of the series. I might accept the Death Stars as second place. DS-9 was the best Trek but it was an accident because came out as an imitation of what they thought B-5 was going to be, ironically.

      100% agree. Earth Space Dock in ST3 was (in my opinion) the most beautiful station ever seen on screen. It's a shame we didn't much more of it. A few more appearances in the films and some reuse in the series is all we got.

      Sadly, the ESD probably got bumped by DS9... not wanting to include two stations from the same show. And while I like the ESD as well, DS9 had 7 seasons of use, a lot more lore, a lot more shown, than the ESD. And that said, here are some others missing that ought to have been mentioned at the least, like the Valley Forge from Silent Running.
