When it comes to racism, it doesn't come up. What you will experience might be class difference. Some rich people can be very pompus and will judge you on your looks.

    Having lived in Thailand for many years I can testify that the racism there is very real. Against all forigners. As a white.. i am more of a 'novelty' racism exists but mostly not a hinderance to life.
    The racism I saw against Indians, khmers, Burmese was shocking. These ppl were suitable in the country as 'servants' or labor and anything else was against the kingdom. The racism against Africans (black) was even worse. Not to their face of course but at all other levels. Including simply serving me before serving them in a shop and i have asked..."hes next not me"... they continue to serve me.. or show real contempt at being pulled up on it. Cambodians 'seem' a lot less fake... but I havent lived there to know. So i enjoy getting this videos take on it.

      There’s a difference in culture that will clash with Khmer that you need to acknowledge and an example are videos like these. Even though the person being interviewed is for the most part positive, content like these would be considered disrespectful to Khmer because it’s essentially losing face. If you were invited over to someone’s house, you don’t openly complain about the food prepared or the accommodation provided. I don’t understand how Cambodians can say the smallest things against the government or voice concerns about neighboring countries and they get jail time for inciting chaos. But why when expats create videos talking about racism in Cambodia, trying to paint Cambodians with a broad brush, it’s not seen as inciting unrest?

In fact, they're outright racist towards asian men. Considering us too short and not masculine enough. I haven't encountered any racism from Black women, honestly. They've showed interest in asian men more than white women and Latinas have. You would think Black women would be equally racist towards asian men as white women have been due to black women are used to dating their own black men who are on average more masculine and taller than asian men. The fact is Black women do not fetishize or discriminate men of other races the way white, latina and asian women do. White women are known to fetishize black men and Latinas do too but to a lesser extent. That’s why a garden (which is a man-made place where botanicals and florals are divided and segregated creating a serene place in contrast to the untamed, diverse, overcrowded wilderness) is used as a metaphor to represent the very first civilized kingdom on Earth. Any human who preach equality and inclusion and ready to accuse others of racism and xenophobia are most likely descendants of invasive wild tribal nomadic pagans who superstitiously worship the wind, not a human God-King who created human laws of right and wrong.

    We are Khmer but the word khmer was written in complex style ,was read as khem mac rac not khmer. When Thai occupied Cambodia they read this word as khmen(r) not in the complex style, in normal style, so the word khmer was born , so we have to names khmer and Khem mac rac.
    Khmer had the killing field because of Vietnamese they pretending to be khmer, impostor like Pol Pot , even Hun Sen , too.
    Now Hun Sen is pushing khmer to very danger of nuclear by giving land to China, our ancestors, too predicted that...

    Not sure if saying the word "Khmao" can lead to be derogatory. Like the Spanish word for Black is "Negro" so is it wrong for a spanish speaker from Spain or Latin american country to say that?

    • @d.c.3534
      @d.c.3534 Před 7 dny +1

      That term is now seen as derogatory when used to describe someone of African descent. The word itself still means black and used by Spanish speakers. That's one of the challenges of multi-racial, multi-ethnic environments. What one person interprets as innocent offends another. Another example is the use of the word ignorance. Ignorant/ignorance can and is often used to insult people now. People need to be mindful of cultural differences though and not dismiss everything they don't agree with as ignorance. Khmer people will often introduce someone and identify them by their ethnic background. We can introduce someone as "My Lao friend" and the Lao person themselves won't take offence. But if you introduce "My Black friend", most people will say it's racist.

      @@EvanChorm-le6tn We don't think it's racist, but others do based on their history associated with the word. The word Negro is considered offensive and no longer in use. Since it's not a Khmer word, there's no need for Khmer people to use it. The Khmer word "Khmao" is different because we use it to describe a person. There is Krong Ta Khmau in Cambodia and there's nothing racist about that. I don't believe Khmer people should have to censor themselves or change their language to make it more comfortable for others. People go to Cambodia for opportunities of a better life than where they came from. That people make such videos and comments while living more comfortably than the average Khmer person sends a red flag to me.

      Do you know what the word "racist" used to mean before its definition has been changed and expanded over the years? It means "Someone who believes that people of his/her own race are better than others, and treats people of other races unfairly." Segregation in the U.S. until the mid 1960s and apartheid in South Africa until 1990 are solid examples of racism in recent history around the world. Vietnam and Cambodia have a long and complicated history with one another. I wouldn't call it nationalism either. The word you're most likely looking for is "xenophobia" which is frequently used by the West now. Do you know what happened to the indigenous people of the Americas who were so welcoming to outsiders? Here's a word for you to become familiar with--ethnocide. One of the definition is "Ethnocide exterminates ways of thinking, living, and being from various cultures."

Maybe a bit nationalism, but I think it leans heavy into xenophobia, the fear of losing one's cultural identity and country to another. I've never heard about the genocide committed against ethnic Vietnamese in the 1700s. Can you provide a source where I can read up on this? And haven't Khmer Krom people voiced their concerns about being oppressed in Vietnam, about forced assimilation in the past? Both groups have suffered in the hands of the other in both countries. And Pol Pot did not believe Khmer to be superior. No one really talks about it, but he also looked to wipe out Khmer culture. He felt it was polluted and actually praised the culture of tribes people in the NE of Cambodia, regarded their culture as pure. That was the original hotbed of the Khmer Rouge movement. North Vietnamese army saw tribesmen revolting in Cambodia and armed and trained them, helping to cause further instability. This may be one of the reasons why Lon Nol was so Anti-Vietnamese. We'll never know the different ethnic groups and their numbers that made up the Khmer Rouge.

      Khmer and Vietnamese are the same race so that word doesn't apply. Nationalism, sure, but still heavy on xenophobia given the history between the two countries. Cambodia entering into a treaty with France was primarily due to fears of being swallowed by Vietnam, not Siam because the Khmer monarchs had a good relationship with Siam's monarch at the time. It was never about feeling superior to the other, but fear of losing one's cultural identity and country to the other.
      And resentment during the 1960s-1970s was due to the Vietnam war spilling over into Cambodia, and because North Vietnamese military were arming and training tribes people who were resolving in Cambodia in the NE. The NE of Cambodia was a hotbed for the KR. That's the culture that Pol Pot thought was pure, unlike Khmer culture which was polluted. The KR also sought to wipe out Khmer culture.
      And let's be honest, there's a history of violence against both groups at the hands of the other in both countries. And even today, I've seen comments by what they refer to themselves as "Overseas Vietnamese" living in Cambodia talking down about Khmer people.
