Maytag Washing Machine - How to Test Individual Parts (2010 - 2021 models)

  • If you own a washer similar to this made by Maytag and made generally between 2010 and 2021, there is a secret mode that will let you test all the parts like the water valves, drain pump, spin, and agitate functions that force the machine to operate outside of modes. This is very helpful to test a feature to see what may be bad.
    Its also very, very helpful to get certain parts removed like stuck-on washplates.

    The 'right-to-repair' movement is such a great thing for certain people, like me, who just want access to tech specs like diagnostics which are usually privy to manufacturers' service departments snd anyone they authorize to hive them. You may remember the old Chilton books from years ago for cars? How great it would be to get the same things for other products. Thanks for your channel and sharing the knowledge.

    Thanks! How does the Maytag MVW4505MW compare with the Amana NTW4519JW? The Menards salesman claimed the Maytag is the better quality choice with a better warranty to back it up.

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I would kindly ask the rep what parts are better on the MVW4505MW. Almost every single one of those VMWs is the same underneath with VERY minor changes, but radically different prices.
      Actually since you sent the $2, here's your answer:
      Agitator: Maytag is better (the W10680220 isnt great, but the plate itself is better)
      Gearcase: Can't notice a difference as far as I can tell.
      Motor: Amana is 1/4hp, Maytag is 1/3hp

    • @xbluesaintx
      @xbluesaintx Před 3 měsíci

      @@bensappliancesandjunk So, based on that, the Maytag is the better choice if simularly priced?

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@xbluesaintx yes. In my experience, those Amanas are usually $100-200 cheaper. So if they are identically priced, I'd go Maytag.

    LOL - I accessed this info but see that this info probably doesn't apply to our our FIFTY yr old machine. Hubby has been keeping it running all this time with only a few minor repairs/adjustments....

  • @LifeMyWay007
    @LifeMyWay007 Před 3 měsíci

    QQQ - I can't seem to find this answer, but if anyone knows.... For Inverter Refrigerator - is there a cost effective way to convert to 12v or 48v? Is the power loss from AC to DC big enough to make converting to DC only worthwhile, or is the efficiency benefit to minimal to notice? This would be for RV or Off Grid situations. (for some reason I am thinking inverter units convert to DC. So the conversion would save efficiency loss of battery/solar DC, to AC inverter, to appliance, and back to DC)

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  Před 3 měsíci

      For the compressor?

    • @LifeMyWay007
      @LifeMyWay007 Před 3 měsíci

      @@bensappliancesandjunk What I was thinking is, like many electronics today, an inverter unit plugs in to AC, then converts to DC to run everything? Some things have the converter outside like a brick for a laptop or phone, some things have it inside the unit. I was guessing inverter appliances convert to DC within the unit? Which means it should be able to be bypassed if you know the correct DC voltage to use.
      -I can be completely wrong, correct but negligible power savings from efficiency gained by not converting DC to AC to DC loop, or it might be a way to save 10% + of power?

    hardest part of working on these is getting that damn tech sheet out

  • @NicholasStein
    @NicholasStein Před 3 měsíci

    Pardon my stupidity. I do understand why I need these tests. You do not explain how the tests help my diagnose what is wrong with the machine? For example, if the washer is not spinning or agitating, I can see that when I am running the machine. I understand that being able to run specific cycles to see if they work is desirable, but how does that tell me what part failed?

    • @bensappliancesandjunk
      @bensappliancesandjunk  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Because this is helpful in all the other Maytag videos I've made on my channel. And the ones I am about to put out. I reference these types of tests often when I am making a video on other items.
      So for example, I am going to do a video on bouncing/unlevel issues that require you to remove a horiffically stuck-on plate. I was able to force the unit to dump hot water in the unit + agitate command (without allowing the drain to operate at all, keeping the hot water + chemicals in the tub) to remove the plate and fix the unit. Without the knowledge of this method, it'd be impossible to utilize.
      Also, for my videos regarding no-spin states, I've referenced these tests, but not in a dedicated video.
      The manual mode video for the Whirlpool iteration has >150,000 views and I've referenced it for viewers in videos that have 10-20x that number.
      So by itself, this video may not have value, but if I made this video + all tests it could be used on, that video would be 2hrs and since few will watch that, I break it up in bite-sized pieces.

      @@bensappliancesandjunk Ben, Thank you for your detailed answer. I have been following your channel for a couple of years now and I usually only focus on those that I have an immediate need for. Examples follow.
      1. The repair person who came out wanted $200 to look at my washer. He made a quick test and quoted me the $200. I replaced the door switch with one based on the model number for $12.50.
      2. I did not call repair. I replaced the transmission coupling on that same washer myself for $10 based upon your diagnosis that it was not the whole transmission.
      3. I replaced the belts on my gas dryer myself.
      4. I purchased my 28 cu. ft. Samsung refrigerator with no in-door functionality based upon your videos. The part that breaks is the ice maker, water dispenser. You also discussed that Samsung seems to have fixed their compressor problems. $1,300 at HD delivered and hauled.
      So please forgive me if I was rude and for not watching all your videos. You have saved me a LOT of money.
