- At the Gatlinburg Airport (GKT), this military Douglas A-1 Skyraider airplane did a takeoff, couple of low-passes, and landing. When it landed, for some reason it smoked more than usual so am unsure what happened there.
This aircraft is now based at the aviation museum at the Gatlinburg / Sevierville / Pigeon Forge airport.
Just lost a friend...Korean war vet...Navy pilot who flew A-1 skyraiders. They where the A-10 of there day. He flew close ground support off an aircraft carrier. Even was shot down captured and rescued by the Marines. He grabbed a bayonet the day he was rescued. The family has it for me. Love the plane and it had as much grit as the pilots who flew them. Salute to the A-1 and the brave who flew them.
Worked Skyraiders in Thailand at the base that never was , NKP one of the best years of my AF career !
150 gallon gas tanks on stubs, In 1969 we occasionally carried 1 on stub mostly just a 300 gallon tank on Centerline station
My dad flew that A-1 on SAR missions in Vietnam. Was at the the museum in June.
Good nigth,,, greetings of your video,,, and to the people who made posible this video,,, the pilot of course,,, lm fan of the aviation and this great SKYRIDER,,, wwwaaauuu
The zice amazing,,, the sound of the engine,,, concert of roar,,, have a good time and thanks,,, your friend Oscar de Playa del Carmen Q R México,,,
I was attached to VA196 Skyraiders in 64 - 65 aboard the Bon Homme Richard cva 31, we were just finishing our 6 months tour when we were given orders to the south China sea, ended up a 10 month tour. During our 20 hour days, I was an Aircraft Electrician, but when we were not doing AE work we loaded bombs and rockets to help out ordnance dept.
Did you take any pictures or video of your time aboard? If so you should put them in order and CZcams. Getting as many peoples stories documented as possible is a good thing for future generations.
I have a picture of myself standing on the left wing beside the cockpit of one of these at Bien Tuy airfield just north of Can Tho, Vietnam, 1968.
Most people don’t know the engines on the A-1 we’re basically the same engines on the B-29 Super Fortress. The B-29 on a medium altitude bomb run could carry 12,000 lbs of bombs 1600 miles or 20,000 lbs low altitude about 1,000 miles. The A-1 could carry 8,000 lbs 1100 miles. At medium and low altitudes! If you sent up 4 A-1’s, they could do the job of 2 B-29…… or carry 32,000 lbs of bombs vs 24,000 lbs on the B-29 or 40,000 lbs at low altitudes and short range.
In other words, the A-1 was very very flexible platform.
I was doing some work on the hospital the day this flight took place. I will never forget that day. Awesome plane ! That one has some history with it also. From where it started to how it made it to here. Really good story. Great video.
What a beautiful Beast
Beautiful full flap landing. Great video.
What a beautiful heavy duty beast! I think it probably took the A10 to finally render it obsolete. They want to say that the A10 is obsolete too - well nothing has shifted the A10 yet and I would like to know what will replace it, probably a drone...
One great aircraft.
Great video!
My dad flew one in nam, special operations squadron. Had the TT on the tail.
Beautiful bird looked like he blew some rings on landing. Love the radial engines!
This one belongs to the Tennessee Museum of Aviation. It flies as Lieutenant America
The ground attack plane with a B-29 engine!
Beautiful. HOO YAH !!!
trained on these at Ft. walton, then off to pleiku in the day
i havent go to see the skyraider fly yet but hopefully over the summer i can
And therefore miss 80% of the target they are intended for when carpet bombing..The A-1 could put down more poundage, with better accuracy and with less risk in terms of how many people needed to fly the mission
In reply to Saranghaelove1 - Er... yeah it could. The Spad could carry about the same or even more than the Avro Lancaster which in turn could carry considerably more than the B-17. B-17 was the worlds major 4 engined medium bomber. :)
B-17 :Short range missions (
I’m puffin’ smoke Sandy...
@michaelmiller85 He probably just changed the fuel/air ratio as far as the smoke goes.
"Are those fuel tanks or bombs?"
"Thermonuclear weapons".
Ohhh the landing
@wbsnakes ur soooo lucky! u know the guy who owns the A-1?
that they were. Canada used the same engines on CP-107 Argus. They were notorious for leaking oil.
Mike Nation?? Guy in hat looks familiar.
I see an expensive repair in the works
Ohh and at 04:07 the 'rod' takes off from the ground and flys across the airplanes path . ( checking it out I'm sure )
Is that private or a museum owned
Look up Flying RODS and SKYFISH here on CZcams. I have lots of pictures of them . They like to watch old planes for whatever reason .
Really nice camera work-nice definition. Would favorite but y'all are talking ;)
Sandies in the air. Request CAS. Danger close.
Здоровенькая штука
How many A-1 in the world can fly?
The A-1 could carry more bombs than a B-17!
SkyRaiders saved thousands of lives in Viet Nam!
I love it. Best greeds from NorthEastGermany
Butthead said ...: "Man that thing is cruising !" :)))
I might have shut down that engine after that backfire and had it checked out
Round 'bird' comes back for a look at 03:18 and back again at 03:38
01:57 flyby and at 02:10 a 'bird' just appears out of nowhere ? Keep looking up !
real software .
I thought the A1 had airbrakes
Any guess on the takeoff distance? Trying to find info for takeoff distances for a fictional ship design I'm working on. Right now it's got a 100m long runway with a ski jump/ramp at the end and I have no idea if that's long enough or not.
May have lost a jug - Sure didn't sound healthy at touchdown.
Sandy Lead this Cole 5 by 5..
Nope UKVoodoo in all The BF series
