- Why is Marc Chagall known as the painter of Love? Chagall an orthodox Jew, was born in Vitebsk, Russia (now Belarus) on the 7th of July 1887 as Moshe Segal. He was the eldest of 9 children. In 1910 Chagall moved to Paris, where he changed his name to the more French sounding Marc Chagall and in 1911 moved into his own studio in La Ruche, the legendary Parisian artist colony. On 25th of July 1915 Marc Chagall married Bella Rosenfeld in Vitebsk.
By 1919 Marc Chagall had set up the Vitebsk School of Fine Arts with artists Kazimir Malevich and El Lissitzky. But things did not go well and Chagall soon upped and left. Shortly afterwards, Malevich renamed the Art School the Suprematist Academy. By the 1930's Marc Chagall’s paintings were selling well. In 1933 a number of Chagall’s paintings were publicly burnt by the Nazis, outside of the Mannheim Art Gallery. In 1937, on the orders of the Nazi regime, all Chagall’s works were removed from German museums, three were shown in the notorious Degenerate Art Exhibition in 1937.
Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, Chagall moved his family to the United States.
In New York Pierre Matisse, the son of artist Henri Matisse, organised Chagall’s first exhibition in America, in November 1941, at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York. In the late 1940’s exhibitions were held of Chagall’s work in New York, London, Zurich and Bern in Switzerland. They were all hugely successful. But Marc Chagall longed to return to France, in 1948 he left America for good. In 1950 he moved to Vence in the South of France and intermittently met up with Matisse and Picasso both of whom had studios nearby.
In 1951 he married Valentina Brodsky. Their marriage gave him new energy later he visited Chartres Cathedral to study medieval stained-glass window painting. This inspired him and in 1959 he created stained glass windows for the north apse of Metz Cathedral in France. 1964 saw Marc Chagall complete the window of the Good Samaritan for the memorial to John D Rockefeller Junior and the Peace window for the United Nations building in New York. Marc Chagall died at his home in St Paul de Vence at the age of 97, on the 28th of March 1985.

My step fathers mother was a harpsichord composer 1920s -1980s Trudy Roberts ..and Marc Chagall painted the interior of her performance harpsichord
Wow, do you still have the harpsichord?
My cousins mothers 3rd wives friend 😂
At about the same time as the American Windows, Chagall presided over the installation of his Four Seasons mosaic at what was then the First National Bank of Chicago. Chicago is blessed with many pieces of public art including those by Miro, Picasso, and Calder. It very much enriched my upbringing.
Sounds good. He also created the stained glass windows from a small medieval church in a tiny village in Kent, UK as a gift to a family who suffered a tragedy entirely out of his own funds.
Marc Chagall was born in the Lithuanian Family in Belarus ( then Russian Empire) As a Lithuanian and a big fan of his work, this makes me really proud. Thank you for your videos!
Glad you enjoyed the video, cheers from England
This was such a good primer on his life story and the important milestones of his career. One cannot separate the artist from the conditions of their life and the culture of that time...such a world that he produced work in---a world that could be horrifying and deathly, and yet he rebounded many times, and created such unique dreams with paint. I may use this in my middle school art lessons this year.
Thank you for your kind comment. My videos are intended to place the artist into the context of the times in which they lived and are intended as an introduction to the artist's life and work. I think it would be ideal for a middle school audience. I hope it goes well. Cheers
Wow! I learned so much. He has always been my favorite artist and I learned a mountain of information about his life. Thank you!
You are very welcome. Cheers Paul
One of my most favourite artists who still inspires me. Thank you for your continued work to bring these artists to us.
Wow, thank you! Cheers
The best thing about this video is the comprehensive, voluminous review of Chagall's paintings. Chagall was much more prodigious than i had imagined. Imho
his paintings were also more diverse
than i had previously known. His body of work is just dazzling.
I think i would love to have a framed print of one of his paintings for my office or my apartment.
Ive just recently discovered your channel . it has rekindled my love of the masterworks of painting. My love began more than 40 years ago when
I took a required art history class as a college student at Columbia University. You have brought back many happy memories of that class and of the artworks that i was exposed to when i was an aesthetically naive and intellectually almost barren young man.
Thank you for all of the hard work that you put into making this video. I really enjoyed and appreciated it.
Wow, thanks for that, really pleased you enjoyed the video and the memories it brought back. Cheers
Thank you! Love this painless way of learning some art history. So interesting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the way you tell these stories. I enjoy the backgrounds and cosplay. Painting is something I wanted to do from youth. Dad said it doesn’t pay the bills so I needed to study something for a real job. Now that I’m retired, your videos have come into my feed and provide the inspiration I need.
Now is the perfect time to start painting - go for it. Cheers
I have loved his work since I first saw it as a teenager. He's probably my favorite painter.I just learned that I'm a cousin of Virginia Haggard. This was a very informative video on him I have been learning so much from you about my favorite artists, and some who I've never known much about or even heard of before!
Glad you enjoy my videos, Cheers
Thank you for this excellent video about pine of my favorite artists. I liked the way you posted his ages and other helpful details in the upper right corner, allowing the flow of the narrative to proceed uninterrupted.
Glad you liked that, I think knowing the age of the artist at a particular time is useful.
I love the paintings and the colors. I like to paint colorfully. He now inspires me.
That's wonderful!
I grew up in the world of art, and continue to love to paint and draw with my wife, a gifted artist and teacher. We collect books about, and love to discuss, great painters. And in all this time I've never encountered such an engaging series of introductions to the great artists of our time as Art History School. Mr. Priestly has created a new genre of video based art education, really. At least I've never viewed anything quite like it. Every school art class should consider showing these marvelous videos.
Wow, thank you, your comment is much appreciated. I'm pleased you enjoy my videos, you have clearly identified that they are aimed at students and anyone interested in learning about the basics of art history. Thanks again. Cheers Paul
The time line for the different paintings is very helpful.
Glad you enjoyed the video
Phenomenal job, you are a natural! Beautifully illustrated video, and I loved the way the video layers historical/archival photographs superimposed with Chagall's wondrous paintings. Thank you!
Thanks, really pleased you enjoyed the video. Cheers
Thank you for making these videos. It’s very informative and fun as well! It’s really nice to see someone so passionate about art
That's great, really pleased you are enjoying my videos. Cheers Paul
Thankyou for the history lesson very informative there's painting by Chagall I always loved ' the Rabbi ' I knew he was in Paris with Picasso and other contemporary artists of that era ..love his thoughts comment : A poet uses the same letters ,but creates new words ' and really cool seeing a portfolio of his works . Ngamihi .
Wow, thank you Paul for this brilliant introduction to Chagall. Fifteen minutes ago I knew nothing about him, just a comment of Buffon, the Italian goalkeeper, about how Chagall's «Promenade» took him out of depression. This made me feel curious. Now I understand much better. I must say some paintings have moved me into tears.
Really pleased you enjoyed my video. I didn't know the story about Buffon, that is really interesting. Cheers
Thank you so much Paul for educating the whole world (especially amateurs like me) about art history. :)
You are very welcome, really pleased you like my videos. Cheers Paul
lol so true!:)
Thank you for your programs and teaching. Each show reinvigorates me to revisit these artists with a fresh approach.
Thanks for listening Cheers
Thank you so much for your videos, you make Art History so much easier to understand during online school
Happy to hear that! Cheers
Thanks for showing. AWESOME!
Cheers
Thank you very much of such informative and details about Marc Chagall, my top 3 favorite artists of all time. Chagall was the artist I chose to have a short oral presentation about. I wish I could have watched this video back then. the color of life is the colour of love, what a generous spirit Marc was indeed!
He was a wonderful painter. Cheers
Very complete information about the artist’s life along with his works. This way we can follow his “evolution”. Thank you again.
My pleasure! Cheers
Chagall became my favourite artist perhaps out of sheer chance. I was going through a long melancholy and came across some of his paintings, I & The Village being one of them and for whatever reason the juxtaposition of elements and bright joyful colours caught me and gave me great pleasure. And still does to this day but I keep his works a little bit at bay, just so I know I can return to it when I need an uplifting experience.
It just shows the power of art, sometimes words just don't cut it. I'm pleased his work means so much to you. Cheers
As soon as I turned on my iPad & was on CZcams, this incredible Marc Chagall video came up & this was one my brother's Benjo , favorite artist . He's a great artist too , And on this 24th of May 2020 , he made a deep connection like an ESP , the day he stop painting too .
Wow, glad you enjoyed the video.
I love he work of Marc Chagall, thanks for introducing him to me! :)
You are very welocme
Another fantastic video. This one was particularly informative and well done. I had no idea that Chagall lived such an interesting life! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
Art history was fun for me because the artists always had different experiences, views and opinions about the world. I would love to wonder around Art Museum with the artist and just talk or look at the works. But so much for daydreams. Your blog helps me bone up on my art history again. It is the music of my heart.🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🐱❤🦋🙆♂️❤🦋
Really pleased you enjoy my videos, agreed wandering around art galleries is magical
Thank you so much, especially for showing so many paintings of the painter
My pleasure 😊
Your video helped me realize that I never knew much abut Chagall before, other than his name, style and a few notable works. Grateful to be learning the rest of his story now. My favorite tidbits from this are his glass works, moving about and networking with other artists. Bright blessings.
He produced many stained glass designs, he even designed some wonderful windows for a small church in Kent in England.
Thank you for posting. Very interesting. I view Marc Chagall's work as fanciful dreams. Adore his work.
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
Thank you. This was fantastic and your energy is amazing.Loved the presentation and the rich visuals!
That's great, many thanks. Cheers Paul
You have inspired me to pick up my brushes and paint again. I had lost the desire to paint. Bless you
Wonderful! That's great
That was wonderful - thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Great video Paul, thanks. He had a very interesting but disjointed life. Not unlike other european abstract artists of the era. A great talent!
Thank you I think you are right.
Your presentation is just right both audio and visual thank you
Many thanks, much appreciated.
Chagall is one of my favorite artists. I've seen his work in Nice, France at a museum dedicated to his work alone. It was a wonderful experience. I love these videos. So informative and detailed.

Thanks for your informative reviews of these artist. I have been painting for 40 years and am always amazed by new information revealed. Oartist.
He was an amazing artist. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you for another wonderful video. Among Chagall's stained glass works are also his windows for the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
Yes, he also created windows for a tiny medieval church in Kent, UK and covered the cost of installation. Great man.
I LOVE the way tell the stories
Thank you, I do enjoy making the videos. It's nice to know they are appreciated. Cheers Paul
Thanks for great videos of painters. I loved the Chagall paintings and it was very good to see La Ruche in Paris where i have stayed with artist friends, also Russian painters.Nissan Rilov being one of them. Its very interesting and lots of good artists have and still do live there.
Glad you enjoyed the video, I've not been to La Ruche, must do that the next time I'm in Paris.
Excellent video! Thank you.
Really pleased you enjoyed it! Cheers
Thank you Paul so much! I really find myself enjoying your videos. I love Chagall and Lautrec. I am well over fifty and I am starting to paint (watercolour) again. Celebration of life is the point, not how others receive one´s work. I can see that you Paul have a sense of humour so I can say this; watching the film of Monet, i thought you could take a few acting classes. However, it was fun and would have been boring with a trained actor. I thought to myself why you can hold my interest from the beginning to the end, it´s a rare quality. I came to the conclusion that it is because you seem a straight, truthful and honest in your inner character and that is being reflected without. You are no fake, you do not fake. Blessings!
As you said above, you have to be yourself. I am no actor but why should that stop me making a film. I'm glad you appreciated my honest attempt at telling the great man's life and thanks for the kind comment. Cheers
@@ArtHistorySchool I really liked it! And indeed, had there been an actor, it would not be no where as engaging as it is! Actors are boring, people being themselves is engaging!
Enjoyed this channel and hope to see more of them.
There are more to come!
Love your enthusiasm and interesting facts.
Thank you

More information about Marc Chagall that i did not know. Thank you.
You're welcome
The photos of him about 14:00 in show a man with candid vibrant eyes. A kind smile. There is such energy or a twinkly mischieveousness in his expression. Can't wait for him to wake and see what he will create after a long peaceful rest.
He was a kind man who deserves all the accolades. Cherish his life and work because there will be no more.
@@ArtHistorySchool ....no more for the present. I'm looking forward to the future. Appreciate your words about him.
