Doesn’t matter if it would have been a goal. The tules are very clear that as long as there is an attempt to play the ball it is only a yellow and a penalty. The red card would be warranted outside the box but this was a ridiculous call. The only thing I can think of is that the ref said he didn’t attempt to play the ball.

That same play has been given as a yellow in MLS previously. The ball was headed out of play and it wasn't obvious he could have gotten to it before it went out. It should have been a yellow by MLS rules.

@offthehookproductions4481 I'd the player makes a play for the ball and commits a dogso then it's just a yellow and a PK. If the player does not make a play for the ball then you can get a red and a PK. The red ended up getting reminded so I'm guessing SEA argued that he made a play for the ball. Personally it's definitely a little sketchy. Not sure he made a play for the ball and didn't intentionally just go for his leg but it is possible that is what he was doing. Tricky to tell intent sometimes.
