  • Funny interview. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant conned Karl into his new TV show, according to KP in this interview with Christian O'Connell.
    He starts by telling the story of how he met Ricky and Stephen. Also hear Karl talk about how he unintentionally made Gail Porter quit her job after one day and why everyone should visit Wales.

      @nloc1929 Před 2 lety +25

      @@haleynic I've been listening to the podcasts recently (yet again), what I put it down to is mainly Karl's vocabulary.
      He has said this himself that he has trouble expressing his thoughts clearly into the right words and struggled with school, we still understand what he means, but the slight errors cause confusion with Ricky and Steve who didn't struggle with school as much.
      But the hilarious thing is that Ricky and Steve see themselves as intellectually superior due to their 'academic intelligence', which is mainly the ability to retain knowledge and regurgitate it back.
      Karl I would argue is just as intelligent (if not more) than Ricky and Steve, it's a natural, curious, intuitive intelligence, and he can think laterally in a way that the others can't.
      TL;DR: Karl is living proof that you don't need to be well-read and academically gifted to be a very intelligent and perceptive person. It was most likely it the schooling system that has led him and others to perceive him as less intelligent, it's a shame because he's actually brilliant

It’s the pov he has that differs from many other people that draws people to Karl. Ex 4:50 how many people would consider what he said to be a positive/motivating thing if he didn’t explain it? He purposefully went against the grain, which is why he’s appreciated by those that understand his thought process. Just my 2cents

      I think about this too! I find him endlessly comedic no matter what he's saying.
      My first attempt at trying to describe it is that I find it amazing how I can't predict what he's going to say but every time I somehow completely agree with him. He said in an interview that he's happiest when he's washing the dishes by himself and I thought that was really sweet and inspiring even.
      In the cases I don't because he's obviously got some facts mixed up, the mix up is so funny. It's even funnier with Ricky and Steve who don't always seem to see where the mixup happened. Like the story with the astronaut monkey. He got it right that they sent a monkey to space but then he made up the part in his head that that means that the monkey controlled it too and therefore must have been pavlovian contioned into learning to fly a rocket.
      I would like to hear more theories if you guys have them on why he's so goddamn funny. I don't usually find people this funny.

      he has the intelligence of a child. He sees things exactly as they are presented to him, so any nuance in the background flies over his head, like when he wasn't impressed with Newton's work. While that might look "smart" in the sense that doesn't get distracted too much from stuff out his reach and he thinks (and comment) stuff that we might miss out for the sake of routine (therefore appearing as "intelligent"), is that exact same mentality that makes people like him get deeply impressed by, to the point of believing, magic tricks. Since there is no obvious and inmediate reason to doubt what just happend in front of their eyes, then it should be true.
      That type of behavior are clear marks of mental retardation. A really good example in fiction would be Forrest Gump.

      And then there's 100,000 people around all doing the exact same shit.
      So some people are going to think WTF is this shithole, seeing pictures and docos doesn't give you the reality of the place.
      Another is Pompeii tons of places fenced off and you can only see 1 tenth of the total area because it's full of porn all over the walls. As the Romans loved having orgies and threesomes and gay sex etc all over the place.
      The more money you had the bigger the pron murals you'd have to show off.
