  • One of the most beautiful rural stations on the LSWR was Seaton Junction. The station was closed by 7th March 1967 but still stands largly intact today. For many years access could be had via the footbridge which linked the road to the old Seaton branch platform.
To say the station had atmosphere was an understatement.
These few clips show how the station looked in June 1991.
First we see steam locomotive number 777 Sir Lamiel attacking Honiton Bank as she powers West throught the station with a special to Exeter Central from Andover on the 18th October 1992.
Next clip is 50017 heading east with the 1000 Exeter to waterloo. The class 50s would be coasting flat out at this point just about reaching the bottom of Honiton bank.
The following clip shows 50049 powering west with the 0920 Waterloo to Exeter. The throttle would be wide open as the class 50 attcks Honiton bank. I love the noise of the jointed track.
The next clip shows 50037 with the 1220 Exter waterloo again filmed on the 18th June.
The final clip shows 47703 with the 1105 Plymouth to Waterloo filmed on the 18th October 1992.

Don't know why it took me 8 years to see this great video but thanks for sharing!
A once grand station, it has a melancholy feel to it. In the early 1980's I used to enjoy flying through here on most, if not all, the Class 50's, in BR Blue or large livery. In the late 1980's I had a photographing day around this beautiful part of the South West.

One of my favourite places on the rail network, even now. The station often seemed to be quite busy. Can remember crowds of people on the platforms here and in the cafeteria a year or two before it closed. There was often shunting going on at the milk depot and various trains stopping and expresses rushing through. I often used the branch line services from Seaton by DMU's.The holiday camps in Seaton near the station ensured good summer usage of the branch, but in the winter it was very quiet.

Brilliant! I was born in Colyton in 1950 and used to take the Seaton branch to the junction with my parents to head off to Exeter or occasionally Waterloo. Best thing ever to be roaming the carriages and trying to turn the massive wheel in the guard's compartment. Sadly left England in 1963 but possibly the right time before steam disappeared. Used to watch the summer expresses arrive with all the white-skinned kids from London. Revisited in 2015 and very sad to not be able to even find Seaton Junction! Took the train from Axminster to Exeter and so surprised to see just mostly a single line now and Exeter station so barren of track etc.

Classic Class 50 coverage with jointed track. Seaton Junction much more overgrown today.

Wonderful bit of high speed class 50 footage there... single track... shame I was never there at that time!

    Hello Mr Stapleton Rd.
Love that 1950s vibe, very atmospheric then that classic thrash to complete the picture
I didn’t realize the buildings had survived
    Great video!

The wilful destruction of what the labour of men took years to build (for puportedly economic reasons - BR destroyed more than the war did) is strangely compensated by the intense melancholy that exudes from the place similar to that the Romantic poets found in ruined castles. There is beauty in destruction and decay.

Alas the platform footbridge shown in this video no longer exists, it has been demolished due to extensive deterioration and neglect.
