I actually am leasing the 2018 version of almost this exact car except for colour. Your review is pretty much spot on. It has though, been probably the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. There are electronics gremlins which the dealer can’t fix because it’s software, and FCA has not released any updates for ages. The 2.4 is burning oil at *just* over FCA’s “normal” limit of 1 litre per 3000kms, so that’s probably not going to get fixed. It’s funny how many things in just a test drive that you miss that quickly become apparent after a few days of ownership. It does ride pretty decent though, and handling is not bad for what it is. You’re right, no way it’s worth what they’re asking for it.
The problem it’s running right now is the “intelligent battery sensor” has failed, which prevents the auto S/S from working. I’ve actually lost track of all the things that it’s had fixed over the 2 years.
I'm not here to judge, i daily drive a miata which is pretty stupid/fun. But you had to have known that FCA products are at the bottom of reliability. It's common knowledge. Look, I want a gladiator/ wrangler. I'll never buy one new ( can't afford 60k + vehicle), but i'd like to own a wrangler one day. I'm only buying as a second or third vehicle never as a dd. Dodge ( particularly FCA) is horrible when it comes to reliability. I honestly don't know why people buy them. Why did you buy this? honestly curious not being an ass.
Point three inches higher up ... that's quite something there. The trail-rated badge is a really nice touch, really allows me to one-up all the other SUV-owners.

The Vibe the front and rear bumpers are different compared to regular compasses, along with the .3 inch lift it actually gets quite good approach, departure, and break over angles for a small SUV. I own one and it’s a perfect suv if you live in a city with bad weather (lots of snow in Indiana)
Neo Smith I swear to god I thought that this car in top spec was maybe 30k, and I’m usually pretty descent with guessing these prices. The only other car I was this surprised by was a Chrysler 300s with a v6 and a couple options , no AWD, it was 50k. That’s insanity. I could get a charger scat pack, a loaded Avalon hybrid, a loaded Volvo S60, an IS350 f sport etc for that
@@colelockridge5816 Because 300 is the kind of car you get in base version, if you prefer large limo for not much money. You get touring for $30k with one or two packages. Or, you are a Chrysler fan, and then you get fully equipped 300c with 5.7 and all options, because then it has quite a lot of features, and is still cheaper than premium sedan equipped with all of these options and equivalent power. There is no point to buy 'medium' trims of 300. Surprisingly, 300 feels quite luxurious in higher trims and people who buy these are into American cars anyway, so they can keep the price. It's insanely successful car if they managed to produce it for so long, and still sell it at high price.

I was genuinely considering getting this instead of the RAV4 but this video made me change my mind. The price tag is tempting. I want something that I can go camping with. I love the small size of this, the off-road capability, the panoramic sunroof options. I just wish it was more reliable :(
My son bought a 2018 Compass, not sure of the trim level but not the Trail Hawk, after driving a lot of the competition. He decided it was the one he liked best, and now after 40K miles, he is is still in love with it Not the first problem with it, just normal maintenance. It is 4X4, but just by accident, not something he will ever use except if we get a snow/ice storm which rarely happens here, but does happen occasionally. A couple weeks ago my 2004 Taurus died, since my son works nights, and I'm disabled I've been driving his Jeep a lot, I am now looking for a used Compass. No it's not something your going to take off-road, no it doesn't have huge over powered motor, no it does not have the "best" interior, but it rides comfortable,, iit is nimble, it's small enough it's good in tight parking lots, it has enough power to easily merge in traffic on the freeway even it at times it's at it's limit. It gets a solid 25 mpg in town and 35 mpg on the highway, not the best but acceptable, for what it is. The radio is great unless it's a weak station that is far off, the HVAC works good,, in 100+ heat if the vehicle has been sitting in the sun it does take a while to cool off, but once it get's started it works good. Same for if the temp is low, but that's where the remote start comes in, get most of the work done before you get in the vehicle. I don't know if i would say fun to drive, but it does have it's moment. I don't know if I would call it a Jeep, but then again he didn't buy it for the name, and I'm not buying for the name. We are looking at what drives in a way we like, we are buying for what comfort is present (and even with my broke back the seats are comfortable enough to spend an entire day in town), we are buying based on what options are present and it has most of what we want, and not that many options that we will never use. In other words it meets the needs we have, despite the things you complained about (plastic/interior, "weak' motor, it seemed like a quality product, and so far for him it has been, and considering the 8 or 9 used one's I've seen with anywhere from 100K to over 200K miles they seem to last.I've only seen one that had a problem and that was a transmission that went out at about 90K miles, but it was obviously trashed, and driven hard, including off-road use, that's understandable, the "truck" wasn't really made for off-road use. I get the feeling that like most people you are just anti-Chrysler to start with and any Chrysler product will get a bad review. Trust me I get it, Chrysler hasn't really been known for the best quality in a long time. I remember a time that not even Chrysler executives drove Chrysler products (that's a joke). But I've been driving Chrysler products almost exclusively (although not on purpose I didn't just go looking for a Chrysler, it's just what I would find) since the late 1980's. Every Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth product I've owned I put at least 200K miles on the car some 250K or more, and traded it while it was still running brand new. In my jobs, I've delivered pizza,, and had jobs where I had to go out of town most of the time, I would be on the road a week or so at a time, so the miles added up quickly. The only time I had a major problem was when I forgot to change the timing belt at 100K intervals, that was my fault, not it being a Chrysler. My past experience is no indication of how good the quality will be now, but as I said my son has had no problems yet, and I've found other Compass's with well over 100K so apparently they do last. I know I will get a lot of flack off this, but I don't care, this is my experience if yours is different, then that's your experience. But I'm going to tell you what happened to me even if it's not what happened to you..
My 2018 compass has a six speed transmission and rides great around town. It's got plenty of room for carrying stuff. The interior is fine for me. Are there better CUV's at the price I paid ? Maybe. Had it 2 years and zero problems.
I'm glad FCA entered into a joint venture with PSA. They'll keep making the same garbage, but at least they'll be working alongside a brand that is more experienced in making garbage.
@@charleslombard4432 I'm 190 cm tall and I can't turn the steering wheel in a Peugeot without scraping my knuckles on my legs. If I move further back the steering wheel blocks the dials. Now with FCA's expertise in cheap plastics and unreliability, maybe we'll get a car that tortures taller drivers the exact same way using cheaper plastics...for short distances before it breaks all down.
@@NotCommanderShepard they made a call to make their cars not standardized. So yes for certain body shapes that steering wheel is not the best. For the rest of us, this steering wheel is amazing. I just moved to the US and I can't pick a modern commuter, they all look so bland Toyota, Honda GM you name it. If I could buy a 3008 or a c5 aircross here I would do it in a heartbeat. And Peugeots are actually pretty reliable nowadays. And regarding Fca, not all their cars have terrible interiors. The new Wrangler is really good the Pacifica is pretty great and the Ram is amazing. They just don't have enough resources to update all of them. When their teams have the money and time they put out some of the most competitive products.

Got ours for 22k, not a bad everyday car, no storage in rear when backseats are up. Hunts for right gear at 45mph. Awd works really well. Worst part is the start stop shit.
I can’t stand the start stop either! Other than that it’s a perfectly fine everyday car. I upgraded to a 2020 Compass latitude from a 2016 Nissan Sentra - that was a true pile of junk. I didn’t really need a large vehicle (I have no kids or hobbies which require a lot of storage) but I love having the 4x4. I work at a hospital so I have to get to work in any and all types of inclement weather.
SG is at it’s best when doing regular mainstream passenger heaps. Especially Chryslers. Your Wrangler and Gladiator vids are multiple watchers for me. Basically, you are best when diving into cars that cause you pain.
CUV SUV AUV I rarely get a Honda when renting. Dodge and Jeep are huge in the rental segment, mostly because they make the cheapest minivans, rear wheel drive vehicles, and CUV’s on the market. A close runner up would naturally be Nissan because they make the cheapest cars in almost every segment, from the Versa to the Rogue,
CUV SUV AUV I have literally never gotten a Toyota as a rental in the United States. At best the economy would be a Hyundai, but it’s usually a Nissan on Chrysler product. I upgraded to a Mustang once from a Dodge Charger (which Hertz thought counted as a sports car because it was RWD) I’d be thrilled to get a Toyota rental. Even a Yaris.
My sister had a 19 Compass.. 2.4L ... had 2 replace the engine 2x placed in under warranty.. She finally got tired of dealing with it and traded it. it was pretty nice inside but major engine issues. Got major major discounts with a loaded version and paid $25*.
Here my father bought it's non off road variant. 4x4 limited plus for nearly 31 lakhs rupees that is around 44 thousand dollars. Yes we wanted something better. But our old car was honda that is too highly priced. But it is cool though
I have a 2020 Compass Latitude. I have had the car since November and put about 10,000 miles on it. so far it has been perfect for me. I am a nurse, meaning that I have to come to work in any weather - the 4 wheel drive has been great getting through wisconsin snowstorms. I do not have any children so the smaller storage capacity in the vehicle has not been an issue for me. I’m lucky that some of the downfalls of this vehicle aren’t an issue with my current lifestyle.
I’m currently a fully loaded Compass via Thrifty for a couple of months, and I must say, as a rental or lease car, It’s pretty damn good. It’s an easy car to live with as well as to drive, the ride is very smooth and stable, the interior is user-friendly, the tech is well calibrated and the the steering, maneuverability is super light yet predictable. Additionally, the Beats audio system drowns out the coarse motor.

Had a 2008 Jeep Patriot. 4WD system was the best part of it. It would put power to the rear wheels based on throttle input rather than waiting for wheel slippage. My biggest complaint? It ate up control arms, tie rod end, and ball joints. Don't know why but it did. Lots of complaints about it on the forums. Not sure if this is better. Eh. I'll spool my turbo diesel instead, now days.

Test drive the Cherokee Limited with the V6. Probably one of the best FCA products. I cross-shopped it against the Rav 4, CRV, etc., and I found it far superior in ride quality, handling, interior quality, power, etc. Gas mileage is meh, but it takes regular so whatever. I'll take a NA V6 with 270 HP over some small displacement turbo 4 any day. Also has been very reliable.
Aside from all the negative criticism, I really like the looks of the Compass, the Trailhawk version is actually decent off-road. The tech is good as well.
We like our 2020 Jeep Trailhawk. We live on a coffee farm on a hill side. Part rocky, dirt, and a few place is paved. A 4x4 road. This Jeep meets our needs. I use the 4low/4-lock every day to go up the hill. Yes it could use more HP/ torque. Bottom line it performs well for the farm. We like the how it handles on the highways.too. This All wheel drive system works like it should!
@@tailsneon556 I wish I'd have done a lot more research before buying my Jeep Renegade. The ZF 9HP is enough reason not to buy it, let alone some of the other shortcomings. It's a Fiat 500 X with a Jeep costume. Simply put, the ZF 9HP is a war crime.
From a reliability perspective those shifts are going to really wear the clutches. You want fast engagement for durability, not outright slipping into gears.

CX-9 owner here. I like it better than the Renegade. I think they should stretch it to have a third row. 2.0 litre Fiat diesel. 6-speed manual. I think it would sell great at about 33k. I like how it seems to sling the low gear up shifts. But this trans must go. Too many gears for such a small engine. Great review-just subbed. Cheers.

Fair warning, the infotainment is utter shit. A colleague has one on lease and he has had nothing but issues. We were driving one day and it rebooted mid drive 3 times. Took almost 2 minutes each time to get back up. When you're using it for navigation, it is a big deal.

Yes the chassis is Italian but the rest of the vehicle was designed by US engineers and the transmission is of german design and it had some early teething problems but for the most part it has been fixed quite well..... We checked out the new computer a few years ago when our lease ran up for our 2016 Mazda CX-5. I knew right away it was a bad decision to get the Jeep. It was about the same price as the Mazda and the Mazda we leaps and bounds better. The interior felt way cheap and it was cramped (in fairness I think the Jeep is a class smaller but whatever) it looked nice but it felt crappy so we ended up in a new 2018 CX-5 and I think that was a way better choice.
Wife's first new car was a 2014 Jeep compass. Drove that thing from Florida to Arizona and back twice. Worst driving experience I've had in my life. Was redlining trying to stay at 70mph with cruise control on the hills east of Dallas. Traded it in a few weeks later for a cx-5 and it had basically no trade in value. Cx-5 is a revolutionary driving experience in comparison.

One plus not mentioned in this video is that the Jeep Compass is one of the few left out there that you can get with a manual transmission option - 6 speed in the sport version. Purchase stipped down to what is needed to go point A to Point B w/manual - good by me anyway! :-)

My girlfriend has a 2019 Compass. Pretty much all of what was said here is accurate. The engine blows. I can’t stress enough about the pricing though.. she does not have the trail hawk, but has decent (white, half cloth half leatherette) seats, and has upgraded rims. The MSRP was around $29k and they discounted it down to just over $20k. It’s not the best vehicle for close to $30k, but for $20k I think it’s harder to argue against. FWIW, she loves it and has not had any reliability issues. MPG for her isn’t bad, either.. she gets 27-28 doing her normal city commutes and 34-35 on the highway.
I daily a 2018 Compass Latitude and having driven the "top of the class" Forester, I can say that in my opinion, the Compass isn't a bad vehicle. Yes the audio system sucks, the transmission gear hunts like fuckin crazy, and the brakes are like a light switch, but I gotta say, I still love it. I wouldn't buy the top level ones because there's a lot more out there for a better price, but for $28,000 you get heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a smooth and refined ride, and many other great characteristics. You just have to know which trim to get.
In Australia the Jeep Compass Trailhawk comes in a 2L turbo diesel - highly appropriate and more power (Americans seem to be moronic about avoiding diesel) Reviewers here in Australia who hated the 2.4 Petrol that the US gets (when reviewed in the US), were very pleasantly surprised by the diesel engine we get. So I have to reinterpret the pros/cons here with the assumption of a much better engine, which these guys complain so much about. Fuel efficiency is obviously much better with the diesel as well.
I work at a Fiat/Alfa dealer, and In my opinion the 2.4L multi-air is FCA's weakest motor on sale right now. Fuel economy is mediocre, refinement sucks, power is weak and based on my experience, they seem to have more serious mechanical issues than the 1.4L multi-air (NA/Turbo). And if you drive them even remotely hard, they will burn oil. However, the new 2.0L turbo is a beauty. We're having absolutely no mechanical issues with those motors and the highway fuel economy is insanely good. I averaged 36 MPG in a Giulia on a 300 mile drive with cruise control set to 80. Torque is excellent and refinement is better than anything else we offer, including the quadrifoglio motor. The start/stop system sucks ass though. It's super annoying and unrefined. I turn that shit off as soon as I start the engine.
It's only simulation of transfer case just like Renegade, but the good part is... it can lock the center and take off on loose surface road from stop with both axles powered instantly (just like Renegade) which makes it better then any other oil clutch or similar center diffs which wait for slip like Subaru has
Michael Turner-Smith Audi’s don’t have great build quality to me other than the buttons. They feel like VW’s. But the compass has great build quality (soft touch ) that’s all it needs. As long as all the touch points are soft, the quality is great.
Just recently drove one in Latitude trim and was pleasantly surprised. I've owned a Cherokee w/the 2.4L engine and this seems a bit more peppy, if not just a touch louder if due to nothing more than sound deadening. The transmissions in any of them I've driven seemed better than this, and in the one I've owned never experienced issues with lag or unwillingness to downshift once you learn how to manipulate it -- nothing longer than a couple days.
I had Compass leased for my wife since it's appeared on market, and later did big mistake buying it ( she wanted small car) It had lot's of small things from first days and we had most of them pretty quickly fixed. ( We had sun visor on driver's side falling out on second day of ownership) It was fully loaded for 2017, we travel a lot, drove it on all kind of roads, but here are good thing end.. So in around 35 K miles we had oil leak. It was "fixed" in about month we had it again. It was fixed again.. But basic warranty was over. In two months we had family trip and during trip we had new oil leak, and second battery died, what made us almost stuck in middle of Giorgia... Service find there was some leaking from gerabox...and secondly battery needs to be replaced. We return home and brought it to the store.. In about couple of weeks jeep accept replacement of the gearbox. And here the story should end... BUT, no.. In two weeks and about maybe 30 miles driven we had oil leak again ( I was already trying to sell it) So appears there was crack in cylinder block and rust in the engine and at least they accept replacement of the engine for free. And as soon I had it back I sold in to CarMax... So DON'T BUY, maybe lease.

I got one used from an older gentleman who barely drove it. Maybe put 5k on it. Sadly he had to quit driving because of his age. It's a 2017.5/2018 Gen 2 trailhawk. With just the heated seats package. He sold it to me for 25k and honestly overall I'm going to drive it until it shits the bed. And in my opinion the best part about this vehicle is the all-wheel drive system and the simulated "low gear". It's surprisingly capable for what it is. However I've also been extremely lucky I have 45k on it and I have done oil changes every 5K. No electronic gremlins for me. But the engine, where do I start with this piece of junk. It's slow, very slow. I get maybe 24 average MPG. And it burns just under what the cut off is for FCA to swap it with a new motor. The only trim I would buy this car is the trailhawk for the all-wheel drive system, because in my opinion it's very good for what it is and we'll get you through any snowstorm, you can get her dirty. But it isn't going to be doing what a 2 door wrangler can do.
Its funny, because I briefly sat in one of these at the dealership, I thought the seats were terrible and I didn't like its interior either....I didn't even bother taking it for a test drive.........I even told the salesman that I think its way overpriced for what you get, I feel like the top model fully loaded is worth what the base model is starting at.......and that's pretty much exactly what you guys said too
I just bought a Latitude with a manual trans and 4wd. This was perhaps not the first car on my list, but I decided a manual was a must have as they are disappearing left and right. 2020 was the last year for a manual in the compass. The only other cuv with a manual is a crosstrek. My wife has one and we love it, but believe it or not the compass is bigger and I wanted one vehicle with true 4x4 and that wasn't a rock crawler and was decent to drive on the highway. I guess a lot to ask these days? We'll see how it goes...
I LOVED my JEEP Compass, it was reliable and not on problem, i only drove about 2000 miles a year maxium. I agree the engine even my girlfriend said was SO SAD....LOL. it did well in puddles of rain up to three inches NEVER got stuck, but i imagine neither would a prius..LOL. If used strictly for a grocery getter, your probable ok. My friend said he had to fix more than the vehicle was worth in cases as he drove it about 8000 miles a year on street only!
As usual FCA is used as a punching bag for easy views and up votes. Jeep creates the most off road capable crossovers then reviewers complains it has less mpg than the competition. Didn't even try launching it in the granny gear.
I have the 2018 version of this and it's really decent everyday. I've taken it off road on some actual trails, following my buddy's Titan Pro 4X and it did everything he did. It could use a little more ground clearance on some obstacles but it worked really well on 95% of what we did. Is it kinda cheap inside? Sure, it could be better in spots and I agree with the limited cargo capacity inside as I like places to put my things and if the 2.0 turbo was in it, it would be way better. I'd put this up against anything in its segment on the trail any day.
I came from a Jeep Wrangler to this and I like it more then my 2 door wrangler. 35 inch tires got me 15 miles to the gallon. couldn't carry groceries or anything else. I could go mudding in it but I went 3 times in 5 years. I just wanted something that was built for adventures not looking cool. I think this blows my wrangler sport out of the water.
Got a 2015 altitude sport with 48k miles for $11k im loving it so far. Does seem to burn through gas fast but the ride is very nice I feel like I can tackle any weather also with 4x4. Even if its not the greatest I feel its worth what Im paying
I just spent a month in one of these as a rental while my X5 was being repaired due to an accident. What a hunk of junk. I chose it because I had an 89 Cherokee limited before and really liked that thing. I’m now completely turned off of anything in their product line because of this experience. I should have picked the Hyundai.

The Vibe the front and rear bumpers are different compared to regular compasses, along with the .3 inch lift it actually gets quite good approach, departure, and break over angles for a small SUV. I own one and it’s a perfect suv if you live in a city with bad weather (lots of snow in Indiana)

The only other car I was this surprised by was a Chrysler 300s with a v6 and a couple options , no AWD, it was 50k. That’s insanity. I could get a charger scat pack, a loaded Avalon hybrid, a loaded Volvo S60, an IS350 f sport etc for that
@@colelockridge5816 Because 300 is the kind of car you get in base version, if you prefer large limo for not much money. You get touring for $30k with one or two packages. Or, you are a Chrysler fan, and then you get fully equipped 300c with 5.7 and all options, because then it has quite a lot of features, and is still cheaper than premium sedan equipped with all of these options and equivalent power. There is no point to buy 'medium' trims of 300. Surprisingly, 300 feels quite luxurious in higher trims and people who buy these are into American cars anyway, so they can keep the price. It's insanely successful car if they managed to produce it for so long, and still sell it at high price.

I was genuinely considering getting this instead of the RAV4 but this video made me change my mind. The price tag is tempting. I want something that I can go camping with. I love the small size of this, the off-road capability, the panoramic sunroof options. I just wish it was more reliable :(
My son bought a 2018 Compass, not sure of the trim level but not the Trail Hawk, after driving a lot of the competition. He decided it was the one he liked best, and now after 40K miles, he is is still in love with it Not the first problem with it, just normal maintenance. It is 4X4, but just by accident, not something he will ever use except if we get a snow/ice storm which rarely happens here, but does happen occasionally. A couple weeks ago my 2004 Taurus died, since my son works nights, and I'm disabled I've been driving his Jeep a lot, I am now looking for a used Compass. No it's not something your going to take off-road, no it doesn't have huge over powered motor, no it does not have the "best" interior, but it rides comfortable,, iit is nimble, it's small enough it's good in tight parking lots, it has enough power to easily merge in traffic on the freeway even it at times it's at it's limit. It gets a solid 25 mpg in town and 35 mpg on the highway, not the best but acceptable, for what it is. The radio is great unless it's a weak station that is far off, the HVAC works good,, in 100+ heat if the vehicle has been sitting in the sun it does take a while to cool off, but once it get's started it works good. Same for if the temp is low, but that's where the remote start comes in, get most of the work done before you get in the vehicle. I don't know if i would say fun to drive, but it does have it's moment. I don't know if I would call it a Jeep, but then again he didn't buy it for the name, and I'm not buying for the name. We are looking at what drives in a way we like, we are buying for what comfort is present (and even with my broke back the seats are comfortable enough to spend an entire day in town), we are buying based on what options are present and it has most of what we want, and not that many options that we will never use. In other words it meets the needs we have, despite the things you complained about (plastic/interior, "weak' motor, it seemed like a quality product, and so far for him it has been, and considering the 8 or 9 used one's I've seen with anywhere from 100K to over 200K miles they seem to last.I've only seen one that had a problem and that was a transmission that went out at about 90K miles, but it was obviously trashed, and driven hard, including off-road use, that's understandable, the "truck" wasn't really made for off-road use. I get the feeling that like most people you are just anti-Chrysler to start with and any Chrysler product will get a bad review. Trust me I get it, Chrysler hasn't really been known for the best quality in a long time. I remember a time that not even Chrysler executives drove Chrysler products (that's a joke). But I've been driving Chrysler products almost exclusively (although not on purpose I didn't just go looking for a Chrysler, it's just what I would find) since the late 1980's. Every Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth product I've owned I put at least 200K miles on the car some 250K or more, and traded it while it was still running brand new. In my jobs, I've delivered pizza,, and had jobs where I had to go out of town most of the time, I would be on the road a week or so at a time, so the miles added up quickly. The only time I had a major problem was when I forgot to change the timing belt at 100K intervals, that was my fault, not it being a Chrysler. My past experience is no indication of how good the quality will be now, but as I said my son has had no problems yet, and I've found other Compass's with well over 100K so apparently they do last. I know I will get a lot of flack off this, but I don't care, this is my experience if yours is different, then that's your experience. But I'm going to tell you what happened to me even if it's not what happened to you..
My 2018 compass has a six speed transmission and rides great around town. It's got plenty of room for carrying stuff. The interior is fine for me. Are there better CUV's at the price I paid ? Maybe. Had it 2 years and zero problems.
I'm glad FCA entered into a joint venture with PSA. They'll keep making the same garbage, but at least they'll be working alongside a brand that is more experienced in making garbage.

@@charleslombard4432 I'm 190 cm tall and I can't turn the steering wheel in a Peugeot without scraping my knuckles on my legs. If I move further back the steering wheel blocks the dials. Now with FCA's expertise in cheap plastics and unreliability, maybe we'll get a car that tortures taller drivers the exact same way using cheaper plastics...for short distances before it breaks all down.
@@NotCommanderShepard they made a call to make their cars not standardized. So yes for certain body shapes that steering wheel is not the best. For the rest of us, this steering wheel is amazing. I just moved to the US and I can't pick a modern commuter, they all look so bland Toyota, Honda GM you name it. If I could buy a 3008 or a c5 aircross here I would do it in a heartbeat. And Peugeots are actually pretty reliable nowadays. And regarding Fca, not all their cars have terrible interiors. The new Wrangler is really good the Pacifica is pretty great and the Ram is amazing. They just don't have enough resources to update all of them. When their teams have the money and time they put out some of the most competitive products.

Got ours for 22k, not a bad everyday car, no storage in rear when backseats are up. Hunts for right gear at 45mph. Awd works really well. Worst part is the start stop shit.
I can’t stand the start stop either! Other than that it’s a perfectly fine everyday car. I upgraded to a 2020 Compass latitude from a 2016 Nissan Sentra - that was a true pile of junk. I didn’t really need a large vehicle (I have no kids or hobbies which require a lot of storage) but I love having the 4x4. I work at a hospital so I have to get to work in any and all types of inclement weather.

My sister had a 19 Compass.. 2.4L ... had 2 replace the engine 2x placed in under warranty.. She finally got tired of dealing with it and traded it. it was pretty nice inside but major engine issues. Got major major discounts with a loaded version and paid $25*.
She should have invoked lemon law and gotten all of her money back

I have a 2020 Compass Latitude. I have had the car since November and put about 10,000 miles on it. so far it has been perfect for me. I am a nurse, meaning that I have to come to work in any weather - the 4 wheel drive has been great getting through wisconsin snowstorms. I do not have any children so the smaller storage capacity in the vehicle has not been an issue for me. I’m lucky that some of the downfalls of this vehicle aren’t an issue with my current lifestyle.
I’m currently a fully loaded Compass via Thrifty for a couple of months, and I must say, as a rental or lease car, It’s pretty damn good. It’s an easy car to live with as well as to drive, the ride is very smooth and stable, the interior is user-friendly, the tech is well calibrated and the the steering, maneuverability is super light yet predictable. Additionally, the Beats audio system drowns out the coarse motor.
My buddy's wife has one ... An Altitude Edition - It's *awesome* ... I've driven it and I'm impressed with the way it handles.

Had a 2008 Jeep Patriot. 4WD system was the best part of it. It would put power to the rear wheels based on throttle input rather than waiting for wheel slippage. My biggest complaint? It ate up control arms, tie rod end, and ball joints. Don't know why but it did. Lots of complaints about it on the forums.
Not sure if this is better. Eh. I'll spool my turbo diesel instead, now days.

Test drive the Cherokee Limited with the V6. Probably one of the best FCA products. I cross-shopped it against the Rav 4, CRV, etc., and I found it far superior in ride quality, handling, interior quality, power, etc. Gas mileage is meh, but it takes regular so whatever. I'll take a NA V6 with 270 HP over some small displacement turbo 4 any day. Also has been very reliable.
Aside from all the negative criticism, I really like the looks of the Compass, the Trailhawk version is actually decent off-road. The tech is good as well.

We like our 2020 Jeep Trailhawk. We live on a coffee farm on a hill side. Part rocky, dirt, and a few place is paved. A 4x4 road.
This Jeep meets our needs.
I use the 4low/4-lock every day to go up the hill.
Yes it could use more HP/ torque.
Bottom line it performs well for the farm.
We like the how it handles on the highways.too.

@@tailsneon556 I wish I'd have done a lot more research before buying my Jeep Renegade. The ZF 9HP is enough reason not to buy it, let alone some of the other shortcomings. It's a Fiat 500 X with a Jeep costume. Simply put, the ZF 9HP is a war crime.
From a reliability perspective those shifts are going to really wear the clutches. You want fast engagement for durability, not outright slipping into gears.

CX-9 owner here. I like it better than the Renegade. I think they should stretch it to have a third row. 2.0 litre Fiat diesel. 6-speed manual. I think it would sell great at about 33k. I like how it seems to sling the low gear up shifts. But this trans must go. Too many gears for such a small engine. Great review-just subbed. Cheers.

Fair warning, the infotainment is utter shit. A colleague has one on lease and he has had nothing but issues. We were driving one day and it rebooted mid drive 3 times. Took almost 2 minutes each time to get back up. When you're using it for navigation, it is a big deal.

Yes the chassis is Italian but the rest of the vehicle was designed by US engineers and the transmission is of german design and it had some early teething problems but for the most part it has been fixed quite well..... We left the 70 behind us years ago...Hell even VW or BMW have their issues and people buy them like Toilet Paper
We checked out the new computer a few years ago when our lease ran up for our 2016 Mazda CX-5. I knew right away it was a bad decision to get the Jeep. It was about the same price as the Mazda and the Mazda we leaps and bounds better. The interior felt way cheap and it was cramped (in fairness I think the Jeep is a class smaller but whatever) it looked nice but it felt crappy so we ended up in a new 2018 CX-5 and I think that was a way better choice.
It's funny one of it's "shortcomings", the seats shortness in the pant are, was a major reason why my wife selected this vehicle over the Cherokee.

Wife's first new car was a 2014 Jeep compass. Drove that thing from Florida to Arizona and back twice. Worst driving experience I've had in my life. Was redlining trying to stay at 70mph with cruise control on the hills east of Dallas. Traded it in a few weeks later for a cx-5 and it had basically no trade in value. Cx-5 is a revolutionary driving experience in comparison.

Correction: The Patriot and Compass were the most abysmal products anyone has ever made.
One plus not mentioned in this video is that the Jeep Compass is one of the few left out there that you can get with a manual transmission option - 6 speed in the sport version. Purchase stipped down to what is needed to go point A to Point B w/manual - good by me anyway! :-)

I have a 22 Compass, and for the most part he’s right. Biggest upset for me is the acceleration; but what makes up for it is it’s winter driving.

My girlfriend has a 2019 Compass. Pretty much all of what was said here is accurate. The engine blows. I can’t stress enough about the pricing though.. she does not have the trail hawk, but has decent (white, half cloth half leatherette) seats, and has upgraded rims. The MSRP was around $29k and they discounted it down to just over $20k. It’s not the best vehicle for close to $30k, but for $20k I think it’s harder to argue against. FWIW, she loves it and has not had any reliability issues. MPG for her isn’t bad, either.. she gets 27-28 doing her normal city commutes and 34-35 on the highway.

Looked at the Compass Trailhawk but for the minimal price difference went with the Cherokee Trailhawk. I think many will go this route.

I daily a 2018 Compass Latitude and having driven the "top of the class" Forester, I can say that in my opinion, the Compass isn't a bad vehicle. Yes the audio system sucks, the transmission gear hunts like fuckin crazy, and the brakes are like a light switch, but I gotta say, I still love it. I wouldn't buy the top level ones because there's a lot more out there for a better price, but for $28,000 you get heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a smooth and refined ride, and many other great characteristics. You just have to know which trim to get.
In Australia the Jeep Compass Trailhawk comes in a 2L turbo diesel - highly appropriate and more power (Americans seem to be moronic about avoiding diesel)
Reviewers here in Australia who hated the 2.4 Petrol that the US gets (when reviewed in the US), were very pleasantly surprised by the diesel engine we get.
So I have to reinterpret the pros/cons here with the assumption of a much better engine, which these guys complain so much about.
Fuel efficiency is obviously much better with the diesel as well.
I work at a Fiat/Alfa dealer, and In my opinion the 2.4L multi-air is FCA's weakest motor on sale right now. Fuel economy is mediocre, refinement sucks, power is weak and based on my experience, they seem to have more serious mechanical issues than the 1.4L multi-air (NA/Turbo). And if you drive them even remotely hard, they will burn oil.
However, the new 2.0L turbo is a beauty. We're having absolutely no mechanical issues with those motors and the highway fuel economy is insanely good. I averaged 36 MPG in a Giulia on a 300 mile drive with cruise control set to 80. Torque is excellent and refinement is better than anything else we offer, including the quadrifoglio motor. The start/stop system sucks ass though. It's super annoying and unrefined. I turn that shit off as soon as I start the engine.
It's only simulation of transfer case just like Renegade, but the good part is... it can lock the center and take off on loose surface road from stop with both axles powered instantly (just like Renegade) which makes it better then any other oil clutch or similar center diffs which wait for slip like Subaru has

Michael Turner-Smith Audi’s don’t have great build quality to me other than the buttons. They feel like VW’s. But the compass has great build quality (soft touch ) that’s all it needs. As long as all the touch points are soft, the quality is great.

Joshua Rutter it’s cute , but vw’s interiors are really flat and boring.
Just recently drove one in Latitude trim and was pleasantly surprised. I've owned a Cherokee w/the 2.4L engine and this seems a bit more peppy, if not just a touch louder if due to nothing more than sound deadening. The transmissions in any of them I've driven seemed better than this, and in the one I've owned never experienced issues with lag or unwillingness to downshift once you learn how to manipulate it -- nothing longer than a couple days.

I had Compass leased for my wife since it's appeared on market, and later did big mistake buying it ( she wanted small car)
It had lot's of small things from first days and we had most of them pretty quickly fixed. ( We had sun visor on driver's side falling out on second day of ownership)
It was fully loaded for 2017, we travel a lot, drove it on all kind of roads, but here are good thing end..
So in around 35 K miles we had oil leak. It was "fixed" in about month we had it again. It was fixed again.. But basic warranty was over. In two months we had family trip and during trip we had new oil leak, and second battery died, what made us almost stuck in middle of Giorgia... Service find there was some leaking from gerabox...and secondly battery needs to be replaced. We return home and brought it to the store.. In about couple of weeks jeep accept replacement of the gearbox. And here the story should end... BUT, no..
In two weeks and about maybe 30 miles driven we had oil leak again ( I was already trying to sell it) So appears there was crack in cylinder block and rust in the engine and at least they accept replacement of the engine for free. And as soon I had it back I sold in to CarMax...
So DON'T BUY, maybe lease.

I got one used from an older gentleman who barely drove it. Maybe put 5k on it. Sadly he had to quit driving because of his age. It's a 2017.5/2018 Gen 2 trailhawk. With just the heated seats package. He sold it to me for 25k and honestly overall I'm going to drive it until it shits the bed. And in my opinion the best part about this vehicle is the all-wheel drive system and the simulated "low gear". It's surprisingly capable for what it is. However I've also been extremely lucky I have 45k on it and I have done oil changes every 5K. No electronic gremlins for me. But the engine, where do I start with this piece of junk. It's slow, very slow. I get maybe 24 average MPG. And it burns just under what the cut off is for FCA to swap it with a new motor. The only trim I would buy this car is the trailhawk for the all-wheel drive system, because in my opinion it's very good for what it is and we'll get you through any snowstorm, you can get her dirty. But it isn't going to be doing what a 2 door wrangler can do.
The engine/trans combo reminds me of the 2017 Santa Fe I used to own. The trans always hunting for the right gear, did not get very good mileage.

Its funny, because I briefly sat in one of these at the dealership, I thought the seats were terrible and I didn't like its interior either....I didn't even bother taking it for a test drive.........I even told the salesman that I think its way overpriced for what you get, I feel like the top model fully loaded is worth what the base model is starting at.......and that's pretty much exactly what you guys said too

I just bought a Latitude with a manual trans and 4wd. This was perhaps not the first car on my list, but I decided a manual was a must have as they are disappearing left and right. 2020 was the last year for a manual in the compass.
The only other cuv with a manual is a crosstrek. My wife has one and we love it, but believe it or not the compass is bigger and I wanted one vehicle with true 4x4 and that wasn't a rock crawler and was decent to drive on the highway.
I guess a lot to ask these days?

I LOVED my JEEP Compass, it was reliable and not on problem, i only drove about 2000 miles a year maxium. I agree the engine even my girlfriend said was SO SAD....LOL. it did well in puddles of rain up to three inches NEVER got stuck, but i imagine neither would a prius..LOL. If used strictly for a grocery getter, your probable ok. My friend said he had to fix more than the vehicle was worth in cases as he drove it about 8000 miles a year on street only!
As usual FCA is used as a punching bag for easy views and up votes. Jeep creates the most off road capable crossovers then reviewers complains it has less mpg than the competition. Didn't even try launching it in the granny gear.

I have the 2018 version of this and it's really decent everyday. I've taken it off road on some actual trails, following my buddy's Titan Pro 4X and it did everything he did. It could use a little more ground clearance on some obstacles but it worked really well on 95% of what we did. Is it kinda cheap inside? Sure, it could be better in spots and I agree with the limited cargo capacity inside as I like places to put my things and if the 2.0 turbo was in it, it would be way better. I'd put this up against anything in its segment on the trail any day.
Ditto and if you live anywhere Winter..it's a great winter vehicle with it's "4x4"

I came from a Jeep Wrangler to this and I like it more then my 2 door wrangler. 35 inch tires got me 15 miles to the gallon. couldn't carry groceries or anything else. I could go mudding in it but I went 3 times in 5 years. I just wanted something that was built for adventures not looking cool. I think this blows my wrangler sport out of the water.
These cars are plagued with problems. Stay away!
Got a 2015 altitude sport with 48k miles for $11k im loving it so far. Does seem to burn through gas fast but the ride is very nice I feel like I can tackle any weather also with 4x4. Even if its not the greatest I feel its worth what Im paying

I just spent a month in one of these as a rental while my X5 was being repaired due to an accident. What a hunk of junk. I chose it because I had an 89 Cherokee limited before and really liked that thing. I’m now completely turned off of anything in their product line because of this experience. I should have picked the Hyundai.
