In Polish "kukać" has two meanings - one is for the bird, to make a sound, and in English both a bird, and his sound use the same word "cuckoo", while the other one You used - "to look", is a quite modern slangword, definitely not the one used in the folk song ;)

The mening "to look" is from the German word "gucken" ("koukat" in Czech, "to cuckoo" is "kukat").
