    Excellent! You are the first reviewer that so capably articulated the real reasons for buying Pan America. It is a big bike (not too heavy) for big guys, for shitty pothole ridden city streets, for normal body posture, for riding fast and stopping quickly and if really necessary--for leaving the main street and going where others cannot. I did some minor customization to make it more like a "street fighter" and cannot be happier with it.

    To work I loved stripped bikes with no bags, and used a back back. Just get off the bike and go to the office, no need to be digging thru bags and bike pockets. Just park, kill the bike get off and go. The extra layer of cushioning in your back inspires confidence, on the other hand, it tends to get ya a bit warmer/hotter in FL. But to just get there and keep going, the same way when you arrive at the house is priceless. Especially for half hour commutes. In my $20 backpack from Marshall’s I pack some basic tools, all my bike paperwork, rain gear, lunch, water and I was fine for my 30 min commute. It will get you going and under budget for sure.

    I don't know why people mock HD's attempt to break out of its mold. I think they should mimic Triumph with a range of m/c types. The cruiser bike is exiting many manufacturers catalogues and replacing them with big bore adventure bikes. Harley should or must do the same. I hope this bike succeeds.

    • @stevem4783

      Just because Harley has always been an easy punching bag for them. Even old Harleys have their place and have a lot of appeal, but guys shit on them for being old, heavy, and slow. The modernize and make bikes that appeal to a wider range that are light, full of tech, and powerful and those same guys still shit on them.

    • @jonr4651
      @jonr4651 Před 2 lety +1

      I think Harley needs to appeal to that market. The truth is most manufacturers found that it wasn’t very lucrative to play in Harley’s market anymore. There was a time where they were competitive in that segment, but as the mainstream moved on all that was left in the cruiser market was the diehard Harley guys. It is now generally better business to let Harley have their cruiser, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be a good move for them to also move away from it, rather they should do both, because that’s what triumph and Ducati are doing, and no one talks about them going out of business.

    A sportbike for fat guys! I never thought about it, but it really is, isn't it? All it needs is a sport fairing and street tires! Great video, I'm looking forward to seeing more of you on the Dirt Glide.
    I used to do intermediate trails((NOT trials!) on a Road King I bobbed and modded into a terrible ADV, and my friend's Pan Am is a whole different world. Let me get the important part out of the way: The Pan America 1250 doesn't sound like an air-cooled 45 degree OHV twin, and it doesn't feel like one either. It doesn't say potato at idle or gas out at 5000rpm or rattle your hands numb at any point, but in some intangible way it still sounds like a Harley-Davidson... Don't get me wrong, it hits all the same buzzy high notes as an Aprilia or a Ducati, but it still says BRUUUUUUUUUUUMP when all the rest say BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAP! Indian Scouts and FTRs do the same thing, but not as distinctly, more of an O tone.
    Seriously though, here's my review if it only takes 500 miles to form an opinion: It doesn't ride like a Harley unless you're used to another ADV, but its definitely the Harley of ADVs-plush, smooth, great to cruise on, more road focused than the BMWs and KTMs of the world and a little flimsy in spots(?!) but it's ridiculously comfortable and confidence inspiring. That's what he says, anyway-for me it might as well have been a fricking EBR! It was sporty and a little bit aggressive on the road, REALLY easy to maneuver slow and fast and not so much eager to go off-road as it was completely fine with it, whatever you wanna do bro! It slid big old loopy figure eights with ease, it jumped a bit(It wasn't really feeling my Evel Knievel act, but it made it through), it didn't mind getting a little splashy-and I was worried, there's some important electrical stuff under the front of that skidplate! I left desperately wishing I could afford one, but I can wait four or five years for somebody to get tired and my pockets to fatten up.
    Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go rebuild this Road King I dropped down the side of a hill. Don't worry, it wasn't the steep side!

    The great things about these big ATV bikes is they as you say they are great to ride, the bad thing about these bikes are all the electronics, the control, the modes the electronic suspension. It's all great from the start 2-3 years down the line, it starts going South.. Ex KTM owner.

    I’ve been in love with this concept since day one! In fact I almost traded in my way less than stock road king for one, pretty excited about the sportster s, and the Brooklyn as well. Can’t wait to see the new bagger platform with such an aggressive power plant between the rails!
    I gotta say Harley-Davidson has found a way to keep a little soul in these new bikes unlike Indian and almost everyone else excluding triumph and Norton. Even though it’s a completely different animal you can still see the Harley in its shadow.

    Thank god, you are the first motorcyclist I've heard talk about sciatic nerve issues and being more upright vs. crouched over feeling better. It's the one thing I worry about with a scout bobber, used VRod, etc...the new Sportster S comes with a mid control option from the factory stoked about that. Good initial "first" impression video. I like cable clutches TBH. Round is a shape!

    you're spot on, Shadetree, ADV bikes (and SuperMotos, imho) are the ultimate city bikes. Especially as the future is promising more, um, 'unrepaired' road surfaces. 50 years of riding has made me love these things. I think of them as a combination GoldWing (comfort) and SuMo (agility). High quality long-travel suspension is a beautiful thang!

  • @skalover98
    @skalover98 Před 2 lety

    I took a PanAm for a short test ride, about 15 miles, just to throw a leg over one and see if it fit. I am a little shorter at 5'9" with boots on, and I really liked this thing. The power felt so good, and the handling was exactly what I want. And yes, those brakes are no joke, I am coming from a 1989 Honda Transalp, and my main concern with that bike is my brakes. I don't have confidence that they will stop me in a real emergency. The only things I didn't like about the PanAm were the footpegs and the screen UI. The UI took a little getting used to while I was waiting for my test ride to start, didn't feel as intuitive as a KTM or Honda. The footpegs felt like they were wayyy too far back and tilted forward, almost more sport bike like. The footpegs made it hard to stand without feeling like you were leaning over the windshield, and sitting it felt like it was trying to push me forward. Leaning back to keep my body upright felt weird.
    My thoughts are this: I think I would rather still have the PanAm rather than a BMW or KTM because of the Harley Dealer network. If I ever had a problem there is someone who knows Harleys probably nearby. My only real issue holding me back is the engine, with it being so new and a HUGE departure from what HD has always done. I am happy with my Transalp still, and I really want something bigger for long highway runs, but I don't like the size of most of the other current offerings. I am also thinking of keeping the Transalp as my "dirtbike" and just getting a Goldwing, I figure Josh approves ;).

    The drive modes also effect the ABS and TC algorithms. You might be able to control your wrist for rain but stopping and sliding no. Modes are good. And if you hate them there's always the custom driver modes you can tune and just leave
