Lyrics:
And you know it's time to go
Through the sleet and driving snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light that's in the distance.
And you hunger for the time
Time to heal, 'desire' time
And your earth moves beneath your own dream landscape.
On borderland we run.
I'll be there, I'll be there tonight
A high-road, a high-road out from here.
The city walls are all come down
The dust a smoke screen all around
See faces ploughed like fields that once
Gave no resistance.
And we live by the side of the road
On the side of a hill as the valleys explode
Dislocated, suffocated
The land grows weary of it's own.
O com-away, o com-away, o-com, o com-away, I say I
O com-away, o com-away, o-com, o com-away, I say I
Oh, oh on borderland we run
And still we run, we run and don't look back
I'll be there, I'll be there
Tonight, tonight
I'll be there tonight, I believe
I'll be there so high
I'll be there tonight, tonight.
Oh com-away, I say, o com-away, I say.
The wind will crack in winter time
This bomb-blast lightning waltz.
No spoken words, just a scream
Tonight we'll build a bridge across the sea and land
See the sky, the burning rain
She will die and live again tonight.
And your heart beats so slow
Through the rain and fallen snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light that's in the distance.
Oh, don't sorrow, no don't weep
For tonight at last I am coming home.
I am coming home.
Little did we know we were growing up in the greatest decade ever with some of the most powerful and memorable bands ever. This is one of them.
From the summer of 1985. It was a great time to be a U2 fan.
Who else think that the live performances of U2 are better than the recorded songs? So much energy when they perform live! Incredible!
By the way, we are an upcoming band who are very inspired by the music of U2. If you are interested, head over there 👈 and let us know what you think of our music. Especially now, it is very hard for new bands to let people hear their music. Your support would help us a lot!
@crook district, I think more than any other band, that many of there songs are better live but I also like the studio versions in a different way. An example of this is streets have no name and bad from the rattle and hum movie. At first listen the live versions blow the studio versions away with more intensity and more directness but the studio versions have a subtlety that I also love.
Strongly agree
Good observation, agree! The songs are meant to be played live. Cchecked your songs out as well. Really cool stuff, keep it going!
I love ❤️ the live version because it’s more interesting. You can see the energy of the band.
This was the real U2.
Not the Neoliberal U2
@@ab8588 They were always extremely liberal. Just read Bono's autobiography.
Yes. Before the band gave way to technology, becoming a near insignificant presence in their own extravagant concerts. They used to be a powerful rock and roll band in full flight. It’s been a very long time since they were that real rock and roll band. It’s unlikely they will ever find their way back.
@@elmoblatch9787neoliberal
Chris Martin (Coldplay): "I don't buy weekend tickets to Ireland and hang out in front of their gates, but U2 are the only band whose entire catalogue I know by heart. The first song on The Unforgettable Fire, "A Sort of Homecoming", I know backward and forward-it's so rousing, brilliant and beautiful. It's one of the first songs I played to my unborn baby".
Which explains why Coldplay is basically "U2 Lite".
Coldplay are shoyt
We know. He ripped them and Radiohead off so he could have a career.
Awesome
@@rickf More like U2 Lite, Lite.
From a time when they were undeniably the greatest band in the world. This song is one of my U2's all-time favorites.
They were great, but there were also a lot of great bands in the 80's. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing something from Phil Collins / Genesis.
I was on a train & it started to snow ..The wind was swirling & this track popped into my feed,I had forgotten all about it for so many years..The first few notes & I shuddered ..not with the cold but the unalloyed magic of U2 in an era growing up,I just missed ..This is Gotta be top 5 U2 tracks ever !
Driving an empty military bus in Berlin in the small hours and this was played on the radio and I was long way from home and quite low at that time, magic unforgettable uplifting moment for me, love you U2, actually it was a sort of home coming lol
"And you know it's time to go, across the sleet and driving snow, across the field of mourning..." .... I remember making a trip in the middle of winter across the country...never feel like I would live this...
Bonos mullet was as iconic then as it is today.
He was the only person on planet Earth who really looked good in it. The rules just don't apply to the Irish.
They captured something on this album that was both magical and timeless. I love listening to this on vinyl when it snows here in Philadelphia. Something about the aesthetic that it adds to the moment.
Hopefully we get some snow this year! I missed all of it last year.
I think The Unforgettable Fire is their best album.
Thank you for painting this beautiful image in my mind. I saw the pre-tour for this album at the Tower when I wore a much younger man’s clothes. I’ve long since moved from Philadelphia and lost some of the friends With whom I attended that show.
There’s something about your comment that brings me back to that amazing time in my life.
Agreed on all points, Adam. Well said my Philadelphia friend. I’m also in Philadelphia and 88.5 WXPN FM just played U2’s studio version of this amazing song. Hence, why I’m here.
My fav U2 album. Their most emotional and hauntingly beautiful.
Bono’s voice here is EPIC…..Mullen is killing it ‼️
Larry is absolutely incredible!!!
Quem arrasou foi o ADAM CLAYTON.
Quem arrasou foi o ADAM CLAYTON..
He left his voice on the stage all over the world.
Phenomenal version of one of their most underrated songs. This may be the best bass playing I can remember hearing from Adam.
Have a listen to Steve Harris form Iron Maiden, Now there is a bass player.
I know. This and Two Hearts Beat as One.
I remember watching this video when it was brand new, seeing the Sold Out signs (they sold out in Europe) and thinking how one day they are gonna be big in North America. Can I go back to watch it unfold again?
Bono’s voice is amazingly strong here. Am I wrong to say he doesn’t derive a little something extra from the Mullet. Feel the power!
A real rock band. Family-friendly, down-to-earth, politically conscious without the excesses and melodrama. Awesome music which takes the centre stage.
Heard U2 on a college radio station in 1982 and they have been my favorite band since I was 14 and I'm 52 now and still love them.
When I heard under blood red sky when I was 12 that was it, simple the best, live awesome, best band there ever be
The first U2 song I ever heard was I Will Follow in 1980 when I was 10. Saw them on the 1987 Joshua Tree tour. Life changing.
The exact same thing for me. 1982 college radio. They never stopped being my favorite band.
@@hawkeyeted I never saw them. Fans say it's like church..
@@jasoncook6098That's also the first album I heard. My brother played it constantly. I was 13, and was instantly hooked. We both went to their concert in 1987. ☺️
The audio itself is the audio used for “Wide Awake in America” recorded on November 14, 1984 at Wembley Arena in London England. It was not recorded at the concert but instead was recorded at a closed soundcheck before the performance, and the crowd noise was later added by producer Tony Visconti in the studio.
The Unforgettable Fire was such a chill album. Now I gotta go listen to Pride.
Listen to Wire.
I always gotta listen to bad
Still my favorite U2 album to date
I love all of the above mentioned songs plus this one and the title track are really special.
It's like the lads are pouring themselves...their souls... out onto the stage for this. I could just swim in this song forever.
I really love the Unforgettable Fire era. Bring some more, U2!
For me the best from U2 is 1984-1990
I hope that they remaster a whole concert from The Unforgettable Fire Tour

Seriously! I was fortunate enough to see the unforgettable fire tour and I wish I could go back and see them at that era again
@@scottthesportsguy your lucky to see one of the greatest bands of all time in their best era, I seen them first time on the Pop Mart tour.

I wish I had seen U2 when I was a massive fan in the 1980's. I still haven't. I have so much vinyl. All early and 12 inch singles and albums.
Probably the best percussion of any U2 song in this live version. Mullin was at his best here.
I'm a drummer and the dude is arguably the greatest pocket drummers of all time. Nothing showy just flat out good
As a drummer myself, I consider this one of the defining rhythms in rock music - absolutely beautiful
the live side of wide awake in america is some of the best stuff they've ever recorded in their career
Larry and Adam provide a solid backbone for this song. One of my favorites and totally underrated.
The good thing about bands like U2 is that there is always more, much more, even the old ones but with the vibe of today ... Here in Brazil there is a song that says "what a good life that never comes back", but there will always be a memory that tastes like homesickness or nostalgia ... 👍🤗🐞😇🍀🦋🥰💃💃💃💃
A saudade!
So strong feeling
@@notventjan7329 that word can be translated by this image: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudade
we have these phrase just exactly the same in Hungary (what a good life...), and yeah, U2 brings back memories and still sounds refreshing. when i travel to... anywhere (to my father, to my friends, etc), and when i'm going back to my home, this song comes to my mind every time, and i love travelling on a bus, on a train and listening to Bono's lines, especially the final ones, "i am coming home".
dear fellow Sister, cheers from Hungary! :)
In '87 U2 rolled through Vancouver, BC with the Joshua Tree Tour. During the set they played a long, searing rendition of "Bad" and 13 year old me was in awe. Up until then The Joshua Tree album and the War album were my primary points of reference for their music, so when I discovered The Unforgettable Fire because of "Bad" I was fully invested. Two years later I was seeing a girl who was 3 years older than me who played Wide Awake In America, on vinyl, on repeat. Through her I was introduced to the iconic live version of "Bad" that was a close approximation to the 11 or so minutes of euphoria I had witnessed two years prior. And I was also introduced to this live version of "A Sort of Homecoming" that elevated the studio version from UF. Those times were magical. Making out with an older girl in her apartment, while Bono sang to us "...And you hunger for the time
, Time to heal, 'desire' time...". In 2017, U2 returned to Vancouver with the Joshua Tree Tour again, and during that set they played an updated version of "...Homecoming", and I was suddenly young again as the euphoria, mixed with lush nostalgia, washed over me once more. This version of "...Homecoming" will always be close to my heart as I travel through life, now older and wiser, "...across the fields of mourning, to light that's in the distance..."
Love your story
I saw them in 2017 in New Orleans for that Joshua Tree Tour. This song always makes tears stream down my face and makes me miss the simpler times.
Great story...I always go back to the Wide Awake in America EP, perfection. As my favorite U2 song, I love to listen on occasion to the U2 - Bad Live (longest version ever) here on YT.
So far, so close. Same feelings from a fifteen years old guy from Barcelona, whose best friend used to listen U2 in his Opel Corsa. Since that time, all my whole life -50 years old now- and same feelings. Your words make me feel nostalgia and pride for following the best band in the world.
I remember listening to Wide Awake in America when I was in high school back in the early 90s, that's when I became a big U2 fan during the Zoo TV era and went back to listen to their older albums. I never ever saw this video before, I never thought it would be this amazing.
A very special band.
Coming across this album in 1984, I had never experienced music like this. I was used to top 40 hits where there was a chorus repeated many times throughout the song. This song was like long form free style poetry set to music. I was instantly hooked
I love this live version.. it gives me goosebumps ♥️ One of the best performances from The Unforgettable Fire era
Goosebumps here too, every time, especially with the clapping build up.
Their wide awake in america ep is just incredible
This song is pure poetry. Enough said. I have traveled thousand and thousands of miles and this song is part of that journey thru this life. Love U2.
I know exactly what you mean
Even after almost 30 years this song still moves me 💜
There is a better version of this amazing song.I have it on an EP. Can't find it here
"And the wind will crack, in winter time, this bomb blast lightning waltz, no spoken words...just a scream................
Closer to 40 years!
This music is 37 years old, yet it doesn't require a timemachine to relive the music all over again, cause this is a kind of music that feeds the heart for eternity.
I have chills going down my spine listening to this. This is what made U2 the biggest band in the world. The early grassroots following. Then Wide Awake in America is when it popped.
Imagine if every time an Imagine Dragons song was played, this song was played instead. The world would be a better place.
imagine dragon is evil. they're one of the worst acts ever.
Unforgettable Fire is in my top 5 albums of all time. When this came out I could not stop playing it. Every song was just perfect. Even today it brings me good feelings. Personally think this was U2's best album.
agree
Yes!!
Me too. Much better than that stupid Achtung Baby bullshit, where they’re just trying to be something that they’re not.
I thought it was better than the Joshua Tree, but liked Achtung Baby more
Me too. it set the stage for Joshua but I think it was better.
this was such a great EP.. three sunrises is amazing... but this.. this song, under rated in the catalog imo, brilliant stuff !
Love the gig billboard
U2 plus The Alarm, what a line up
It's a subtle thing but the way Bono stretches "to-ni-i-ight" on the "tonight with you" line at the very end makes this WAIA live version special and just gets me right in the feels every time. Love this song!
Best live version they ever did and it was at a sound check before a show!!!!!
i hope u remaster Ultraviolet (Light My Way), Washington D.C 1992 someday, i've been waiting for this like...10 YEARS 😭😭
Soon you will see. 2021 will be a special years for U2. They cannot perform live. So they update old video to make fan happy.
And One live at ZooTV sydney and Streets live at Yankees stadium.
yes 😉
The best concert is ZOO TV Live from DUBLIN 28/ 08/ 1993.
Mullen Jr is the greatest rock drummer of all time. 'Nuff said!
The tone on that guitar is timeless.
He still has that guitar. It's one of his favorites. He broke it out recently, when recording their new album. They didn't want him to, because they didn't want that old U2 sound, but the Edge felt the song called for it. It is very unique and works so well with his style of playing. He likes creating tones that just ring out and that guitar can do it like no other. He has other Gibson Explorers, but that particular one he loves.
He also uses alot of effects as well, constantly trying to come up with new sounds. His guitar tech, Dallas Schu, said he averages at leat four different effects on many of their songs. It keeps everyone very busy when playing live. He is also very guitar specific. If he recorded a song with a Les Paul, or a Stratocaster, he only uses those guitars for that song when playing live. He has at least two of each kind of guitars he uses. Quite often, Dallas is still getting guitars ready 10 minutes before showtime.
@@douglasownbey656 Thaks for that insight. That's awesome that he still uses that guitar in spite of how far they've evolved since those 80s heydays.
I am 55, I have chill listening to that song...
I play this every St Patrick's day.
This is really the song (and version) that changed everything for me. I was already a U2 fan from 1980-1984...but when this video and song on the EP were released, I was hooked forever. I wouldn't see my first U2 concert until May of 1987....then I saw many, many U2 shows over the next 30 years (maybe 25 since then) and never saw this song performed. Then in May of 2017...they played it about 3 songs into the set nearly 30 years to the day that I first saw them. A long journey...but totally worth it!
Some of their songs just tend to fall by the wayside when it comes to making the setlist. For a very long time, 40 was dropped and years later they started bringing it back, sometimes adding it at the tail end of another song. One Tree Hill was like that too, but it's a bit tricky for Edge to remember how to play it.
Just a beautiful song that shows the band's true talent for pure melody. What talents.
This always reminds of school years growing up in Ireland. We loved U2 but couldn't wait to leave Ireland. There was no work to be found. U2's music always kept us hopeful.
How are things in your country today my friend? From a fellow U2 fan in Minnesota.
@@jayjayfreeman I moved to New York in 1988 but back in Ireland now. Hopefully Covid will soon be behind us.
This song is a masterpiece... "I'll be there..." I think it would sound amazing mashed up with David Bowie's "As the World Falls Down"... "I'll be there for you..."
Ohhhh that would be something to behold!
This is the song that made me fall in love with U2.
Same! The 4th album made me realize how amazing Bono sounded and being the first track on The Unforgettable Fire album and also made me feel so inspirational and powerful. That voice and lyrics is truly one of a kind.
Same. The Unforgettable Fire was my baptism in U2. This song made me love them, and Pride made me a fanatic. I was a kid just starting high school, but U2 brought such honesty to their music. It wasn’t the same throw away “let’s party” or “she loves me” lyrics.
U2 makes you feel some deep connection to what they’re playing, what Bono is saying.
wow what a great song! that one guy's fedora hat inspired me to get my own fedora hat which i have been wearing ever since then. OMG that was 40 years ago - maybe i should trade my hat in for a new one
Always remember queuing up for their show at the Glasgow Barrowland and I took my then girlfriend to see them. An absolutely amazing concert. I suddenly went off them when they did the No Line on the Horizon and their other stuff like Innocent or whatever. This is pure raw U2 in this video.
When I was in Reception Class at school 35 years ago I was caught by the teacher singing this song in the toilet and when I came out the whole class clapped 😂
This is awesome. I'm only upset because I didn't do the same.
This is my favorite song by the band, one I’ve never seen live, despite attending 11 concerts. 😂

U2 ranks as one of the top bands of all time! They are still going after all these years. Their words mean so much in their songs. Great band 👍
I can’t believe that was in the 80’s!
Between 1983 - 1989 they were brilliant. The demise slowly began there and the last 20 years they’ve been shocking. They’re still together but more as a karaoke band of there old selfs.

U2; the soundtrack to my life! This (version of this) song was one the songs that *really* made me fall in love with U2
the pure energetic power of this group - god Wide Awake in America brings back mems...
This is a song they need to add back into their set list. Amazing Song!
They did for the 2017 JT tour, but Bono struggled with it so they removed it, not surprising really given how hard it is to sing.
Their greatest song in my opinion!!! Masterpiece!!!
Far and away my favourite opening track by U2
This is the best version of this song…..takes me back.
I love the minimalism of the early U2 tour production designs. This particular tour is a very small stage with a few backlights with a hazer to highlight the beams. No moving lights, none of the giant video screens and gimmicks of the Zoo TV/Popmart/360/UV eras, just 4 guys playing good music for thousands of kids in an arena. Even Bono never really cared for it much. I remember him saying sarcastically about the Popmart stage "thank you for building this - whatever this is". Elevation/Vertigo they got back to their roots as far as tour production design goes (don't get me wrong, Willie Williams is a brilliant production designer - Zoo TV/Popmart really upped the ante for concert production) and this is U2 in their element. Once you cut out the giant lemon disco ball, the "in the round" stage, and all the "Spinal Tap" frills and thrills, you just have a great show because of those songs and those four lads who were pals in school and became one of the biggest bands on the planet.
This song gives me chills
The part where he sings "Welll build a bridge" the first time and the music is speeding up did it for me.
Quanti brividi.. Quanti ricordi.. Periodo irripetibile.. 🇮🇹 From Rome italy

Actually, the live version that is on the album Wide Awake in America was recorded during the band's soundcheck and not from the concert captured in this video. They then mixed in the audience noise to create the illusion that it was a live in concert recording.
Well, they put their heart and soul into their friggin soundcheck because this is absolutely brilliant and I've loved it since it came out in 1985. Just singing this one song like Bono does here would've wrecked my voice for the night, even back then (we're about the same age, so) ...
@@bvaljalo I agree. I was stunned to learn it was recorded during a soundcheck. I read that in an interview with Tony Visconti who produced it. He said it wasn’t unusual for them to burn through 3-4 songs in soundcheck as a warm up.

The band hesitated for a moment and looked to their leader. Someone had suck into their tent without paying. Band security was insistent that they had the "right to" collect their fee. The band hesitated, again!
The bands leader made his decision, "I am the leader of this band!" And a song was heard, paying the wind for God to hear.
Everybody talks about Bono and his more-than-perfect vocals here, but i want to give some credits to The Edge too. He's not the fastest or most technical guitarist (who cares? it's not speed metal), but he's got a very unique sound (you can recognize his guitar among the millions), he's a very creative songwriter, and he uses his effects not for some selfish guitar solo things, but to blend into the songs, he moves with the band - he's more a band person than a soloist guy -, and what is a very important thing, he is a great vocalist. It may look easy to play this song, but try to sing the vocal lines and play these besutiful, ringing arpeggios at the same time. It's way harder than it seems. He is one of the most important and influental guitarist since the 80s. Forget about Bono's personal stupidnesses and all that shit, The Edge deserves every credit he gets.
Teamwork! These guys are grown men and know what they are doing onstage.
I think edge and Bono together make magic
Perfectly said, friend, perfectly said.
Oh this entire band is 100% greater than the sum of its parts. That goes for all of them and it’s exemplified in this song perfectly. Bono’s voice is on point, his politics are on point, LMJ’s drumming is perfect, edges guitar is amazing, Adam’s bass is a force. Soooo good so happy I saw them live twice
I've always thought Edge's backing vocals are superb.
