  • What do you think about hoarded lost media? Do you still considered it lost if it is simply unreleased to the public or would the better term be "Endanger Media?" Do we need a scale like they have for extinct animals?

Not just that: Bit rot will eventually render ANY hoarded prototypes completely useless. Hardware doesn't last forever. In fact, many old game consoles/hardware are shockingly susceptible to the ravages of time. So by hoarding lost media, hoarders are accomplishing nothing but putting what might be the only copy of something in danger of becoming permanently lost media. Not to mention, if bit rot DOES set in while they're holding it? Yeah, good luck selling a dead or damaged cart/board/disk/e.t.c.

Let's see: the owner is an old school electronics nerd who collects and restores old videogames - in spite of what the internet might tell you, this not easily a lucrative career path. Now if he has all this old hardware working with extremely rare media, he can bring this to conventions and specialty events, and possibly even be paid to attend and setup at these events. He can easily charge people a dollar a game, maybe more, and many people who would not give a crap otherwise would be willing to pay that. He could lease these machines to museums or other facilities or events. And finally, he's always got that doubly rare hardware to sell if he really wants to cash out. You lose the vast majority of that if the media goes public online; now all that's left to monetize are extreme die hards who just have to fee, play on, or own original hardware.

I'm in the arcade collecting and lost media scene too, so I can relate to this story. Sometimes there's a lack of obligation to release lost media. It takes time, knowledge and passion. Dumping an arcade game isn't something that anyone can do and those who can do it, have to do it out of passion. You can spend hundreds of hours researching and working to get a game running on real hardware (as I have done before). If you don't have the original cabinet for a game, you may have to make a custom setup on a test bench, not even to play the game, just to see it running. Sometimes there is elitism, because enjoying this hobby doesn't just mean you're a gamer, it can also mean you're a technician. Meanwhile, if a game is dumped, there are people who can play it immediately in MAME and take it for granted. Sometimes there's this attitude from people, "I can just emulate it and have the same experience, so why are you even trying to play this on real hardware?" I'm glad Marble Madness 2 is dumped and people can play it. But sometimes there is a lack of respect and gratitude when it comes to efforts of dumping and emulation.

I agree with the term endangered media. Lost means that there are no known copies. But lost media as a concept doesn't really mean publicly accessible. Something being known to exist but unreleased isn't lost. If there are few copies or owners, it's in danger of being lost, thus "endangered." A work being publicly accessible helps prevent it from being lost, but it isn't a requirement.

I say, for lost media, there are some good reasons to sometimes keep it from public. Those include:
    1. Serious legal issues would arise. Sometimes, people have NDAs for some projects they hold on to. Breaking such can result in fines of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is a lot of money for the average person. If it's media that only NDA holders have then it's not exactly hard to trace who sent it. Or if the media itself is or has a lot of illegal content, and not the copyright infringing kind.
    2. The media isn't sought after at all. While media from any noticeable company is always wanted by someone, I doubt someone cares about "Heroes Puzzle Attack Puzzle Games" by a random person using stolen assets to mass produce cheap games during the iPhone 4 to 5 era. While that line seems blurry, I do think it's pretty clear when something is just pure shovelware designed by the dozen to scam kids and 50 year olds out of ad money and overpriced "remove ads" purchases that work half the time.
    3. If you are actively working on repairing broken lost media into a useable state. This is stuff such finding the parts to repair the cabinet for arcade games or converting it into usable formats.
Hoarding is not one of the reasons.

Yeah I still consider lost media that has its whereabouts known but is out of reach for one reason or another as "lost media". Sometimes it makes sense like Saban's anime dubs like "Bob in a Bottle" and a few more. Some of those dubs exist in full in the Library of Congress but nobody can get their hands on it because... it's the Library of Congress, and even if one could, there are a lot of restrictions on distribution.
Then you have guys like in this video, where it's totally in their power to choose to distribute, but choose not to. And Marble Man STILL isn't entirely found because the build released is a different one! Ain't that how it goes!
Good video. I've never heard of this game but I love the original. Cool seeing it's found, or at least one version is! #ReleaseBuffBoiBuild

Thanks for sharing this. I feel that if someone has the only copy of a piece of media, it really needs to be curated in a way that at least a few copies are produced in order to guard against the permanent loss of that media. As to whether or not that media should be publicly released, well, that's entirely the right of the owner to decide, even though it would be great if at least one copy could be on file with the Library of Congress. We do need to respect the rights of the owners of both the media, and it's copy right.

Atariscott's claim that the game would loose value if dumped is pretty absurd. Collectors pay money for rare original production hardware. Not copies. Not reproductions. Originals.
It's very much clear that Atariscott's entire motivation for refusing to dump the roms for preservation purposes is because he wanted to boost his ego by dragging out his cabinet once a year to play something they couldn't play anywhere else. That's it. It's one of the most sad and pathetic things ever heard, and I would be more than willing to say this to his face if given the opportunity. What a tool.
The worst part about it is you can tell throughout the history he took advantage of the goodwill of others, made copies, etc. and utilized the preservation communities' resources to get the cabinet together but then when it was his turn to contribute he told everyone to suck it. At least if it's just some collector buying things on their own and has it in their collection then that's one thing but this is someone involved in that community who was actively copying everything he got his hands on to begin with. It'd be like if someone on the Redump or No-intro project got something rare and undumped and said, "Nah, we're keeping this one."

  • @Asterra2
    @Asterra2 Před 2 lety +1

Was hoping to eventually hear the clarification on the two versions of the game. There were two designs, the second of which being a response to the poor testing of the first version. Obviously the designers completely missed the point, as you said: The abstract nature of the protagonist in the first game was a big part of the appeal. Marble Madness II initially went with "Powdered Toast Man", and then redesigned it to be more like "Bubsy the Bobcat" (these are my interpretations of the personalities-faux superhero first; "radical" dude second). It really should have been noted that the roms we have are the second version-arguably more tolerable, but less historically interesting in my opinion.
If I were to cite a personal disappointment with the game, it would be the music. Different composer? Most likely. The first game absolutely made its name with its almost 100% excellent soundtrack. The sequel? I think there were a couple of tunes I liked, but the best tune in the game was the remix of the first game's level 2. Some of the new music is actually irritating. It's a little bemusing that in 1991, seven years after the first Marble Madness, you'd be hard pressed to spot any improvement to the hardware used for the sequel. That said, only a year or two later and they might have tried to make Marble Madness 2 with polygons (early 90s polygons), and that would have been a true disaster.
We still need to get our hands on the original Marble Man, so this quest isn't over yet.

I was a huge fan when I was younger, I studied the game and knew it ran on System 1 arcade hardware, I found a Road Blasters arcade I got for a old laptop (Laptop I paid $50 for it), and found piece by piece and got the complete Marble Madness kit... I currently own 4 out of the 6 kits for System 1 machine.
I was also shocked to MM 2, I was one who was searching every year to see if I can find a copy of it... Never could get to any shows to play it. Didn't think I would ever get to play it. I was shocked to see the ROM, and be able to actually play it.

Not a fan of those who hoard old games like this to themselves, even for monetary reasons. I'm curious as to your take on something I was pondering the other day. Do closed (server no longer accessible) MOBAGE games like the three failed Tales of mobile titles (Link, Crestoria and most recently Luminaria) count as lost media? I never had Luminaria downloaded so I don't know how it behaves now that it's closed, but Crestoria won't go past the title screen and only plays the opening, whereas an APK for Link will allow play of the initial opening screens and the tutorial level but won't connect after completion so even if someone still has these apps on their phones or tablets, everything that was inside them is now inaccessible. The best we've got for Crestoria and Luminaria are people who were smart enough to get screen recordings of the story and events, and some scattered videos of Link with I think one or two Tumblr communities that did screengrabs of the story as it was going on but next to nothing on the special events. I know these aren't the only MOBAGE games that have closed but Link and Crestoria were specifically close to my heart and it angers me so much that Namco kept putting so much effort into things that were eventually shut down, leaving us with basically nothing to show for our time and love save memories. Crestoria is getting a manga... eventually? Luminaria did get an anime, or is still getting one, I'm not sure about that one. Link is basically forgotten at this point. To say nothing of the super old Japan-only mobile titles that basically have next to no media out there now save for maybe screenshots and listings on the wiki. I mostly get my information on lost media through videos like yours so I'm not sure if these count or not and what your thoughts are on that.
Hell, maybe an episode of Tales of lost media? (There was also an MMO which I think is completely unavailable since it ended in 2007) Or one on Namco lost media?

I totally understand both points. Yes, it'll lose value if distributed with the world, seeing as it's not so rare anymore and no longer sought after (so much), but seeing as I'm not a collector of anything, I lean more toward the sharing side of things. I just put myself in the other's shoes. If I found something somebody else had, would I want them to share it? Would I be extremely grateful and think they're the best person in the world if they did? YES. If I knew I could provide that sort of joy to anyone, I'd like to think I'd do it hoping that someday somebody would return the favour.
This reminds me of when I was scouring the internet for a movie called "Phobe". It was a cheaply made movie, made locally, that only aired on cable 10 back in the 90's. Of course, nobody had it. But I found a lead on a website for a film festival in a different province entirely. Turns out the creators of the film had aired their movie there (once upon a time). It was a longshot, but I emailed the people of the festival and surprisingly enough, they mailed me a copy (burnt to a CD). I couldn't believe it, not only did they respond, but they gave me a copy for free out of the kindness of their heart. I'll never forget that generosity.

Hopefully some day we'll all get to play it! Irem would later do what is really a part three in the series Vigilante. But like the first game it's very common.
