Yay! So nice to see Hialeah on here. It’s pretty darn Cuban, let me tell you! But I really wish you would’ve gone into the southwest dade area too, where I’m from. Many Cubans that came in the 50s and 60s were highly educated members of society in Cuba. They ended up having to start from nothing here in the USA, and some even started in Miami Beach, washing dishes during the day and going to school at night. They’re true stories of success here in the USA. I want people to know about that side of Cuban Americans because it’s important. It’s important that people see the full nature of our culture and how we have contributed to this country in our totality. All of us. Hialeah is just the start. That’s not the only place we live in. Many of us grew up in the southwest part of dade, and we are still there. Also, Cubans come in all colors! And we are all scattered throughout the city. We are not like Americans that segregated blacks and whites. We are also a melting pot of people, and it’s evident in our culture. Our food, music, even our speech, it’s all highly influenced by black and Chinese immigrants to the island, in addition to Spainish immigrants, of course.

I grew up in Miami mostly in the 1960s and 1970s. I left in the mid-1980s. When I was in elementary school in the 60s, is when the main influx of Cubans took place. Those tended to be educated Cubans. They were smart enough to figure out their best bet for getting ahead was to start their own small businesses. It seemed like every Cuban family I knew owned a successful small business. They really hit the ground running.
The Mariel boat lift was a real disaster for Miami. There were many good Cubans that came over then, but the criminals that Castro forced to come created a horrific crime wave. The criminals were nothing like the Cubans we were used to.
Overall, I can say that Cubans are definitely entrepreneurs in general. They've become a major force in the political structure of South Florida. Many offspring of the first Cubans to arrive have gone on to prestigious careers. I traveled back to Miami in 2005 because my grandmother was dying. There were lots of Cuban doctors and nurses working in the hospital, which did not exist when I was growing up. There are plenty of rich Cubans at the top of the social heap today. They are very family-oriented and support their children's success.

Love hearing stories from Cuban immigrants particularly the elderly Cubans who lived in Cuba before Fidel Castro took over. The younger Cubans talk of how life is now and availability of things we in America take for granted

My dad and sister (she was 8 years old at the time) came over on the Mariel boat lift. It was not all criminals. I just want to point that out. Thank you for bringing the plight of the Cuban people to your channel to share with people.

This is why I love America. The different cultures and the people of the United States of America. So much to learn from those who came from countries with much much less freedom.

Nice video. It's nice to see neighborhoods where people take care of their homes, are proud to fly the American flag, and you can walk the streets freely without anything to worry about. Kudos for Hialeah!
The population of the City of Miami is about 480,000. The population of Miami Beach is much smaller at 88,000. The population of Miami-Dade County is over 2.8 Million yet, every time Hollywood, or the Corporate Media talk about South Florida, they don't talk about places like Hialeah, but about South Beach and the high crime areas of the City of Miami.

Some of us still fly the Cuban flag. No matter the politics of the island, the ability to fly the Estrella Solitaria, is our birthright and cannot be taken away.
