Pulmonary fibrosis can have a number of etiologies. When tests reveal that there is no direct cause and the disease is progressive, physicians only then assign a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). A chronic disease, IPF has proven difficult to treat effectively, and has traditionally led to poor outcomes.
And it's not rare. Approximately 100,000 patients in the United States are living with IPF, and more than 42,000 are newly diagnosed annually. Mortality rates approximate those of breast cancer. Three quarters of those who develop IPF are men and age is a determining risk factor.
But pulmonologists at Cedars-Sinai and Cleveland Clinic are now better able to diagnose this swiftly progressive and often fatal disease with high- resolution CT scanning. Improved treatment options are also showing promise in improving quality of life and prognosis.
Just diagnosed....took a while. I'm 62. Always been responsible. Zero debt. Nice retirement nest-egg always sacrificing, scrimping, and saving planning for the future...that I now don't have. Never been one to live now...pay later. Now I have the opportunity to live now and NOT pay later! With an 800+ credit score and PLENTY for minimum down payments on hundred year notes at I don't care interests rates! I'm about to get me a beach house with a slip and one helluva off-shore fishing boat. My sister can call the banks and tell them where to come get their stuff when I'm done with it. I'm just glad I got a heads-up instead of like that poor schmuck taken out in a car wreck. Gone fishin!
I like the way you think. I was diagnosed with I P F in October 2021. I knew something was wrong for about 8 months previous but I did not know what
Go for Ayurveda .
My fiancé got diagnosed at 46 years old. Beautiful, strong, talented and so sweet. She remains to be strong, but I’m falling apart watching the woman I truly love wither away, struggling to breath
I’m sorry. Love is so hard to lose. It is cruel.
My mother has just succumb to this disease after contracting pneumonia this week. She was 70 yrs old. I had no idea what it was or that it could be this fatal. Thank you Medscape for producing such a wonderfully informative video. To all those whom this disease has affected directly or indirectly, my heart goes out to you!

hello sir.. your video is really nice.. i am not into smoking evenn still suffered from lung fibrosis.. doctors said its of unknown kind.. i was so worried.. i felt like dying then someone asked me to use planet ayurveda medication and it worked like a boon for me..
Thanks so much for the video, I have been diagnosed with PF early results, I have to have a CAT scan and another test. My Dr. a pulmonologist from my town has stated he feels mycase involves long term GERD. I have had it for 47 year to the point of Barrettes disease. He wants me to go to my GI and ask if I should have the operation to tighten up the sphincter muscle. If so it would help prevent the acid from coming up. I am on 60MG of omeprazole and have been for many years. Still I have several reflux. My diet has not been good thinking the drugs were working but in fact we overwhelmed in my opinion. I don't smoke quit in 1980, but my diet was not good until two weeks ago with red wine, lots of acid types of food. I have now started to take care of my diet, lose weight etc. My brother died of complications of the lungs at 77. He had worked for a company spraying paint inside fuel tanks, if those days there were no regulations for that work. Thanks again for all your hard work, I am hoping to live at least another 5 years. But if not I have had a good run.
timmy tool Hello Timmy. I just got diagnosed last week and I’m only 56. I have 4 children and the youngest 2 have type 1 diabetes so I would like to be around a little while to help them along. I too have had a long relationship with GERD. I never would have dreamed it could have caused this. Sure wish the docs new more about treatment that’s for sure.
timmy tool me too and long term germ also long time birds
@@WandaMartingaga I also had acid reflux for....geeze, decades. Have IPF now and am, to be honest, pissed! Reflux can indirectly kill us via intrusion by aspiration into our lungs. Doctors need to really talk about this as it is not as well known as it should be.
Lupus
My nineteen year brother is suffering from this diseases, admitted in seven Hills hospital vishakhapattanam. Doctors have tried their best but his condition is not showing any improvement, every information help is needed, pls help.
If people are healthy and it is stable how long will they live?
3 to 5 years after diagnosis for animals that's up to 16 to 18 months. Done a lot of research on this topic can't seem to find much about it everybody says the same thing and my dog was just diagnosed with this
3to 5 years 🇬🇧⚰️
@@daby8399 i was diagnosed with IPF in 2,000. i was told i would have to take steroids in combination with an immunosuppresent, Azathioprine. i was also told i had only 3-5 years of life.. i declined the drugs. i was then offered a heart/lung transplant, which i declined.
21 years later i am still here but do realise, like every living being on this planet, my time is limited.
I take daily exercise and really do 'push' myself, walking with the aid of an all-terrain walker, going off-road as much as possible, woodland is preferred by me to going shopping. i practice meditation and have Reiki once a month, also practice Tai Chi. instead of the big pharma drugs i use cannabis resin in cooking.
I feel sad for you and your dog.. give lots of love and exercise and make the very most of your time together.. ♥♥ 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Me father die last year, he wose 70 years old
How long did he survive after diagnosis
At :33 seconds he says something about cackling or crackling, whats that mean?
Whenever i see my Thoracic Consultant she always brings in at least one of her students. They are asked to listen to my breathing via a stethoscope. Once they have listened she asks what sounds they heard.
Usually the answer is that there are sounds like 'velcro' being pulled apart. This is the 'crackling' being referred to..
One student, however, took a few moments to figure out what he'd heard and said it sounded like 'Rice Krispies' having milk poured onto them..
i hope this answers your question.. ♥
@charleneodonnell8898 - it's like a mucous sounds in your chest/lungx.
why is there no DX code for this I have lived with this for 16 years. Doctors and pharmacists struggle to prescribe medication.
you have been came a long way while many scholarly articles stating that mortality rate is around 25-36%
what precautions and medications have you made to live longer than what they say 3 to 5 years?
hey man i am a 21 year old and have ipf, elsewise i feel fine but i´d like to live atleast till i am 30 and maybe get a lung transplant after that. tell me about your life and experiences, i´d be really glad
Look into natural medicine
Nature has the answers
@@TheWalterSamuel21 I was diagnosed at 22 and I am 38 now. No transplant so far, but I am preparing to meet with a transplant team soon.
Best wishes. 💚
