I actually felt like that hidden key was by design instead of it being a dev key, since it was a lonely space that made me think something was up there and I would have done the same as you and wound up finding it.
... However, I also think that other players would have smashed the breakable blocks just because, and probably miss the obvious hole as a result. It may have been by design, but the design was definitely questionable. Would have gotten a "Meh" from me.
Also WTF was that bullet hell level LMAO.

Call me cynical, but I think the creator left it as hidden so they could find it themselves than go through the hassle of breaking blocks to find it.
But why hide it when there was many boss like enemies near the door that had the 1ups? Makes no sense to NOT give at least big boom boom a key since he was the only big enemy boss type there.

it's meh to me also. i instantly thought to go up there also but even if you don't worse case you miss it and go back to find it later. going back isn't locked off. it's very inconsequential overall
