- Wondering which island to visit on a day trip from Athens? Look no further than the beautiful island of Hydra.
From the Athens port of Piraeus, we take the ferry on an hour and a half journey across the Aegean Sea to Hydra, an island filled with history, beautiful ocean, narrow cobblestone alleyways, hilltop views, cats, al-fresco Greek dining, water sports, relaxation, and old movie charm.
Best of all, the island is traffic-free and does not have any cars.
Hydra is rich in history. We visit the island's historic Greek Orthodox churches, then venture to the top of the hills to capture the views.

Reagan Massengale Thank you! It’s a beautiful island! One of my favorite parts of my trip to Greece. I purchased tickets the night before and didn’t have any issues.
One thing I noticed Hydra doesn't have is UGLY GRAFFITI. The next time I visit Greece, I will definitely do the Island Hopping.
True!!! I recommend visiting Hydra. One of my favorite parts of my Greece trip.
The entire island is a conservation area. No cars and very local, certainly not urban. Plus the locals paint everything every spring as a part of their spring cleaning. 3:39 funny looking house eh? With an amazing door. Worth checking out its history. Anyway, the island is of course top notch, worth exploring it. Its history is very interesting too.
How long was the boat ride from Piraeus to Hydra?
It's an hour and a half! Perfect day trip :) One of my favorite things I did in Greece!

Thanks! I was able to get around the island by walking, but the donkey rides were about €10 to €50 depending on length

How far is the ferry port from the acropolis?
peaceful warrior We went by taxi which was 22 minutes to the Piraeus port from Acropolis (without traffic). You can also take the metro to get there.
Now, I don't get it. You pronounce it Hee-drah (correctly) in the beginning of the video and then you revert to the (incorrect) pronunciation Hi-drah. What's up with that?
