  • In this video I clean my Bodum Bistro Burr Coffee Grinder using Minute Rice. I wanted to do this demo when I saw how easy it is for this grinder model to become clogged around the chute. I tried all kinds of small & pointed brushes/tools as well as canned, compressed air to remove the fine grounds but wasn't able to get them all out until I ran Minute Rice through it. It works like a charm to remove all the coffee grounds and oils left behind by oily beans! :)
    Here is a link to a video showing how to place the upper burr back into the machine: • Reassembling The Bodum...

    Wow, that worked really well! I picked up a Bodum grinder from a thrift store because my Cuisinart grinder could not do a fine grind for my Breville espresso maker. It worked once and then nothing was coming through. I brush and pick cleaned the heck out of it but still, it wouldn't grind. I thought I bought junk until I tried your rice trick!!! I used standard rice (all I had on hand, and I figured what did I have to lose) and it did the trick *though I think I put two meals' worth of rice through it. Thanks so much for posting this!

    As almost every comment here said, you saved my life! Well my morning anyway. I got that high winding sound and it was not grinding. I took it apart and attempted to take the body apart because I could tell it was plugged deep inside. Then I searched CZcams in hopes of finding a solution. There was this video, like a knight in shining armour. I just happened to have some minute rice, which I never use, and Voila! Clean as a whistle! Thank you sooooo much! Now my day can begin. If I was still working, I would have called in sick…. 😅

    This is fantastic, thanks! I had noticed my Bodum wasn't grinding as much as I needed for my daily 16-ounce mug and I was having to press the power button to give me extra grounds. I cleaned the burr and what I could get inside the grinder and it was ok for a few days but then I was back to pressing the power button again.
    I'm off to run a bit of rice through mine!
    *Edit:* I just cleaned my Bodum using rice and it's as clean as a whistle! After I ran about a scant quarter cup of rice through I tapped the power button once or twice more to make sure all the rice was out. Dumped the collector jar and then gave the Bodum a few raps and a bit of rice and coffee dust spilled out onto the counter. The inside of the grinder looks almost brand new! No clogs of coffee to be seen anywhere!!

    Thank you for the recommendation! Regular rice works well. Use Jasmine since it isn’t as hard as brown rice. This home doesn’t stock minute rice...lol! This is a half Asian household, so minute rice is a sacrilege!

      Lol! I never eat Minute Rice either, to me it is solely a coffee grinder cleaner sold in the rice aisle at the grocery store! Ha ha! I absolutely love jasmine rice and couldn't part with even the smallest bit to clean my grinder with. :-D My Bodum came with a glass container as well, they all do but they break very easily. When mine broke 5+ years ago, I replaced it with stainless steel. The metal solves any static problem as well. Glad my video was helpful. Thanks for watching and stay safe! :)

    Saved my coffee grinder! Thanks so much. My Bodum is just about brand new, and I'd brush it, but the discharge chute and plastic area you highlighted always had build up (because I too use an oily bean). And all of this culminated into that entire area plugging up and the motor was very unhappy, very quickly. I used a brush for the lighter materials, a chopstick to loosen up the packed together chunks, and minute rice to finish it off. Got rid of the plug, motor is happy. Thanks again. 😊

      Glad my video was helpful to you. Yes, a burr coffee grinder is a big step up from blade grinders as they grind more consistently with less fine dust to clog your coffee filter. They are also not difficult to maintain. Just clean it out on a regular basis to keep it running smoothly. Thanks for watching! :)

    You saved my morning! ☕️ The morning right before a job interview is not when I need my coffee grinder to crap out on me! I have the exact same grinder and it was jamming and the motor was making a really unhappy sound. I only had expensive organic brown jasmine rice (the kind that takes forever to cook and is really hard). 2 tablespoons was enough to save my morning. Thank you so much. I was desperate because my Bodum Bistro Burr Coffee Grinder made a terrible noise and wouldn't work. This video showed me how to remove the upper part of the burr. It wasn't easy because the problem was that a small piece of metal (?) was stuck. It must have come in with the beans. I somehow removed the metal and problem was solved. I will always check my beans now before putting them into the top to be ground.

Everything was so glued together I had trouble getting things apart. I had to find the chute and kept cleaning until a bent paper clip was coming out the bottom. I've had the thing at least 10 years and NEVER cleaned it. And use french roast on one setting up from espresso. I couldn't believe the amount of coffee mess I got out of it. No rice, so not as shining clean as yours but it will grind now, crisis averted!!! Thanks so much!

      @helpfulnatural  Před 4 lety +1

      Oh my, that is a long time. The reason I run Minute Rice through my grinders once in a while is because it sweeps out the old coffee oils which is what gets so sticky and gums up the works. It also goes rancid quickly and can spoil the taste of fresh beans going through. It's also very easy to brush out afterwards. Glad to hear you got yours going again. Thanks for watching! :)

    Great video. I have a Breville all metal burr grinder that is 2 to 3 years old. I clean it every 2 to 3 months using the brush and soaking all the parts in hot water. My last cleaning, apparently I had a little moisture in the bean holder that caused all the coffee at the bottom to become clumpy / sticky which caused the grinder to bind. Spent 20 minutes with the brush, toothpicks etc trying to get the old coffee out. Couldn't get anything to work. Saw this video, put in some rice and that cleaned it out. Looks brand new. No residual grinds, can perfectly see the steel, etc. Put my beans back in and worked flawlessly. Going forward, I'm adding rice to the cleaning routine.

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  Před 4 lety

      I have a Breville grinder as well. With all of my grinders, I never get any of the parts wet when cleaning. There's just no way to know if all the moisture is gone before grinding the next batch of beans. Along with causing a clog, the moisture can also cause mold growth inside the machine. If all you are grinding is coffee beans, there is really no reason to "wash" the parts. As long as you clean it regularly there's no need to worry. I clean mine once per week because I like a darker roast which can sometimes create a more oily bean. If you grind oily beans on a regular basis then clean your grinder at least once per week, maybe twice. I'm glad to hear you got it working again. Thanks for watching. :)

But this Bodum won out...because it has a smaller "footprint" and I have a tiny kitchen. It's mostly going to be used for coarse grinding for my French Press addiction. Thanks for the fine video, and here's a simpler possible suggestion; I too do the finest grind with (sticky) French roast coffee beans -- and for the longest 20 seconds duration. As a result, it would clog up every couple of weeks or so and I would struggle to empty the coffee hopper, then find the tiny channels through which the ground coffee descends to the holder and struggle to clean them with a long thin brush and then put everything back together. Doing the rice also helped -- BUT it was all a lotof effort. Turns out a much simpler solution which works at least for months on ends is to tap (bang) the bottom of the grinding machine on the countertop a couple of times (not too hard, don't break it -- but it IS sturdy) to get most of the ground coffee out and then repeat this when I put the empty ground coffee holder back. Now it is fine for months at a time :)

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural  Před 5 lety +3

      The only problem with that is banging the grinder doesn't remove the residual coffee oils that go rancid over time, spoiling the flavor of the coffee. I brush out my grinder regularly (once per week), and run rice through it about once per month.

    Don't know why anyone would dislike this video. Thanks for the tip about the glass cup at the end too, I didn't realise it was that fragile, I was banging mine around the place. Gonna be more careful with it now! I picked up one of these grinders on Amazon recently, for £40, because it had a crack.. Still can't find the crack though. :-)

      My glass cup broke quite easily when gently tapping it on my countertop to settle the grounds from static build up. The stainless steel cup I replaced it with is great! It fits well and does not create any static, even in the dry winter months. If you do have to replace your cup some day, hang on to the silicone lid that comes with it. Bodum does not sell replacements for it, only the glass cup can be replaced. As for the dislikes on my videos, I guess haters just gotta hate. :D

    Excellent video, and you give us info and advice Bodum certainly doesn't provide! People here are kicking themselves about never cleaning their coffee grinder - I would include myself among them, although I refuse to beat myself up because I happen to have the user manual for mine on file. In it there's one paragraph near the end about cleaning the grinding gear. It tells you how to take the machine apart to expose the grinding ring and put it back together, says a soft-bristle brush is ideal, but that's about it. Nothing about frequency, the effect of not cleaning, etc. No wonder so many people don't clean it, let alone make a routine of it like you do! My two-year-old Bodum now whines a lot and produces almost nothing at all but at the coarsest settings. It's been substandard for the last year or so at least, requiring three or four full grinds for few decent mugs of coffee (8 cups on my coffee maker). After seeing this video, I tipped it upside down, knocked the coffee out and used a soft toothbrush and even an interdental "christmas tree" brush and it works much better, grinding reasonably well at medium settings. I have no instant rice on hand, but when I do get some I'll try that too. Here I was considering ordering another one! Well, I won't do that until I'm sure this one has been fried beyond repair. Thanks!

    Ma'am, I love your idea of using a stainless steel hopper. If I decide to keep the grinder, I will get one like yours and not use the glass hopper at all.
    One other thing that is putting me off keeping it, I do not like that rubber coated finish. I just hate it. Something I didn't realise it had when I purchased it. I have a DAB radio with this finish. It has become sticky and it peels off leaving a mess. Terrible stuff.

      I had a hair dryer with the same rubbery exterior and it too developed that horrible sticky surface that was impossible to live with. I totally understand if you decide to send it back. It's unfortunate though as it is a very nice coffee grinder, wish Bodum would consider changing that feature. If you do return it, Cuisinart has a grinder with the same conical burr system and no rubbery coating. You can use the programmable settings or use it manually. It's the same size as the Bodum and the same price point. I don't sell anything but do have a small collection of small appliances & video reviews. ☺

    • @helpfulnatural

      Actually compressed air blows the grounds down into the motor and will clog the gears over time. I use micro vacuum attachments with my vacuum cleaner.
