Explained: How Johnson's Brexit bill rules out extension to transition

  • "You ain't seen nothing yet folks" Boris Johnson told the cabinet today, warning them of the hard work ahead to fulfill the promises he made at the General Election. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
He also addressed the newly reassembled House of Commons, telling MPs it was "a vast improvement on its predecessor". Jeremy Corbyn said Labour would hold Mr Johnson to account for his promises, and paid tribute to Labour MPs who lost their seats.

There are no such things as leave seats. The constituency might contain a leave minded majority at the time of elections but no candidate, no party nor any ideology is entitled to claim a seat without elections.

I think 3 things caused this disaster for Labour
Labour went stone cold on supporting Brexit,
People didn't like Corbyn, he seemed to support everyone BUT, Britain.
His manifesto was clearly insulting to common sense.
He promised free this, free that the list of freebies was endless, this would only be accepted by someone with minimal life experience.
Where is the money coming from?????????
It was simply about him saying he could pull rabbits out of hats so he could live in Downing Street.
Dennis Skinner who was the Labour MP for Bolsover for 49 years lost his seat, that really says it all.
Surely a lesson not only for Labour but also the Tories, DO NOT SHOW COMPTEMPT FOR THE ELECTORATE. FULL STOP.

      @threestepssideways1202 Před 4 lety +6

@@alexanderiliev1431 Actually it's in a very strong position. They don't want to leave with no deal, but they will, if a equitable agreement cannot be made. Many nations in the EU are desperate that such a deal can be made, for the good of all. For instance, Ireland almost entirely depends on the UK market for it's exports. The EU no longer holds the whip hand, because they realise that the British government, has for the very first time since the referendum, not only a mandate but a will.
There are plenty of EU products that are imported to the UK that can easily be found in other markets, wheresoever they may be, and the UK can and will take advantage of that if they have to. It's in everyones interests to stop playing hard ball and fix a trade deal that works for both sides. Where there is a will, there is a way.

    • @alexanderiliev1431
      @alexanderiliev1431 Před 4 lety

@@threestepssideways1202 What about UK? You present trade as a one side thing where the UK is the end reciever. Doesn't UK trade with the EU, which is the current main trade partner of Britain. As it stands percentage wise the UK is more dependant on the EU than vice versa. (Fun fact roughly 20% of the trade UK does with non-EU countries happens more easily thanks to treatis negotiated by the EU and UK could lose access to them if it plays it cards wrong. The service industry would be hit hard as well the leftovers of the manufacturing industry in the UK. And yes UK can always find substitutes but it's one thing to import from let's say Brazil and Canada than Germany, especially when the latter is much closer and until now and atleast until the end of 2020 the trade is relatively easy. So expect at least price hikes in case of no deal. I also want a deal, but trade deals are slow and for example even the mighty USA needs more than a few months to negotiate a trade deal, so extension would probably would be needed, unless Johnson agrees to follow the current regulations which in the withdrawal agreement he said that he wanted to diverge from the current status quo when it comes to these rules and regulations. I am just worried Boris could force no deal with this legislation.

Exactly. Left or right wing. People need to take personal responsibility. Clearly Corbyn has to take responsibility for being party leader and not being sharp enough on his stance and policy related to Brexit. But his MPs supported his manifesto and if they didn't, it's part of rheir job as an MP to liaise with your constituents in a way that makes them understand the polices and what labour has to offer. It's their job to address the concerns of their constituents etc. Clearly they didn't do that effectively enough and they got the boot. A lot of MPs need to take personal responsibility for turning labour into a laughing stock by airing their dirty laundry in public and weakening Labour's ability to be the strong, unified party that this country clearly needed in these uncertain times

Well, every Labour MP was elected under the manifesto/promise, they wpould respect the leave vote
Yet all those MPs used the time in parliament to sow dout in brexit, and throw support behind another ref, even though Thornbelly said in the 2017 election campaign, a 2nd ref was UNDEMOCRATIC.
they used the the fact they were elected under honour the ref, to turn up at peoples vote campaigns for example, and every media interview to sell the lie of a 2nd ref, And the very MPs that did, are London based, they were far more concern ed in not losing their seats, then winning a Majority country wide
Corybn had control of the membership, but not the LOndon based Mps. If Labour MPs had all Honour the ref, the seed of dout a 2nd ref was possible wouldnt have taken off half as much. Corybn lost control of MPS, while keeping control of the membership.

They should have honoured that result instead of being a remouner & doing all they could to reverse the first referendum, by another, and thus the election result was an inevitable one. Labour promised the earth, but how on earth would they the finance from, even his spending manefesto could not be trusted. Corbyn, cannot humble himself and apologise personally to MP's loosing their seats, nor can Corbyn who was hostile towards the brexit referendum, apologize for the party's racism. Biggest loss since the 1930's for Labour - Corbyn and some other shadow cabinet are responsible, that being said, primarily Mr Corbyn as Labour leader. I backed Boris because we've become an international laughing stock. The LD's leader deserved to loose her seat and Mr Farage appears to believe he can accomplish infinity better than May and Boris, when he, of all people, knows just how much the vengeful & punitive EU leaders are, and will be, regardless who! If Nigel was the negotiator he would only create even less room for maneue, only arousing the EU leaderships harshness. All that being said: could we still have a hard Brixit??!

Mary Craegh there doesn’t seem to have put much thought yet into her behavior and her share of the responsibility for Labour’s defeat
All those Labour MPs who didn’t show loyalty to the party have a share in this. How can they present to the public the idea that Labour is he party that should govern when they all tried to knife the Labour Party leader repeatedly in public? A whole load of them quit his shadow cabinet in protest at him being unfit - what kind of a message does that send to the voter? The lot of them had years in which to convince the public Corbyn was a good choice and instead they attacked him in front of everyone like Fredo in The Godfather making Labour look weak and Corbyn unfit
I understand what their idea was - to get rid of him before the election. But the flaw in that was they were not going to be able to do that, he had the support of members. They should have thought several moves ahead like a chess player. Trying to get him removed was never going to work and just made us look bad. Why wasn’t Mary Creagh on the news in the years before this election repeatedly telling everyone Corbyn was right to try and seek peace in Northern Ireland? Or that his economic policies were only the same as other European countries and they were all doing alright?
She was a f-ing Labour MP for f-k’s sake, asking her to bang the drum for a Labour government shouldn’t be a stretch
And who was it told Corbyn Labour has to have a second referendum? Corbyn didn’t like the EU, Corbyn was probably ok with us leaving, I can’t see that being his idea

Why do they keep saying they will turn it to Singapore? I live here and I have lived in UK in mid 1990s & mid 2000s. The UK Govt does not have required skill sets to turn it to Singapore.
If the same situation had been on Singapore, rest assured before Singapore Govt asked for a referendum in 2016 - they would known the consequences of a leave outcome and would have explained it to the people. Part of the UK population for years wanted out. 2008 financial crisis occurred, Greece wanted out and there was rumblings in Spain. What does UK do in 2016 after 8 yrs - they just wing it. There is no strategy and planning.
In Asia there are only Singapore, HK, Japan and Korea which have proper and fairly clean government structures - I am ignoring Australia & NZ as it’s far away from most of Asia. Only Singapore & HK have a system based on western framework. In UK, there is too many neighbouring competitors - Ireland has done the low tax model for years. With the inevitable chaos happening for next couple of years, competitors will invariably take advantage.

I think what Channel 4 need to come to terms with, indeed what the EU themselves need to as well, is the fact that under this Tory government with this huge majority behind it, that they are pretty much now dealing with a very different beast.
They can blabber on what could go wrong on something that is over a year away in their project fear driven echo chamber, but what they really should be emphasising as well, in equal measure, is the reason why the Tory party have done this, which is to bring the EU's decision makers into a much sharper focus, to nobble them from the off in them being able to drag it on for another year at least (and the 10Billion pounds banked with that).
I am certain Boris will go out on a No Deal now, if so required, however, I also believe that Barnier and Co will be more than aware of this as well and that the game is now up for them, making it odds on now that there will be mutually agreed trade deal by the end of next year.

"Anyone who says otherwise is not telling the truth"... what a joke. This people were the problem in the Labour party, and they paid the price for it. While the Conservative were banding together all this time, Labour allowed themselves to be fractured due to infighting. The media too were as biased... They asked people in Labour voting area, which also voted for Brexit, why they were not voting Labour this time, and they said JC was the reason. But guess what, if that same question was asked to Conservative voters in Remain supporting area like London (Putney), they would also have said they won't vote Conservatives because of BJ.
While that was a reasonable response to the question, the media did not follow up with questions such as 'why don't you like JC'. An answer to that would give context why Labour voters were not voting Labour. The media just did not want to hear the answer because it won't suit their narrative of JC.
The MP's in the Midlands, allowed London MB's to dictate the party direction, because they secretly wanted to 'Remain', while ignoring their voters choice. They paid the price, then look for some other person to blame.
I just don't understand how this people think. I mean, this isn't a rocket science. The Midlands voted for Brexit, and Labour MP's including JC, spent 3 years blocking their choice, and yet they are surprise why JC being the head of LP is disliked in the area.
I have not come across any Labour supporter that disliked JC/Labour manifesto to the extent that they would vote Conservative. So the argument about loosing your seat because of manifesto is wrong. To be accurate, I have not spoken to a Labour supporter that dislike Labour's manifesto.

The EU have had it all their own way so far, now Boris is showing that he can call the shots too. Not so with a trade deal. It can be large or small, targeted or comprehensive. The problem with deadlines is that if you don't have one, nothing ever gets finished. And if you do have one that isn't tight, such as the 3 years proposed by the EU, then nothing serious ever gets done until the last minute. Been there, done it all. Boris is right on track.

Luca Plater yes, in their eyes either mr. Corbin is wrong or the electorate. It is never themselves. It is only when we admit our mistakes that we can move forward.

Then finally we have had yet another election which confirms the first two results. Most people do, in fact, want to LEAVE the corrupt undemocratic EU. Soubry is waiting with the tube now, she has a nightie on just for you!
