TIME TO HAVE YOUR SAY! Which of these would you own & why? Tell us in the comments below!
I am still wondering why havent you guys got the Mendez Benz x-class 4wd ute
Hilux, proven and durable, not saying people haven't had dramas. But I've owned two here in Central Aus for bush work and were bullet proof. I'm onto a 2024 LC79 now another solid rig!
Mitsubishi triton
For us down here in Au and NZ there's only one choice. Hilux all day long. Any shortfalls have been well and truly addressed in the aftermarket and a there's a massive amount of aftermarket options, parts easy to find, easy to work on and everyone knows how to work on them. If you can't afford a 70, Hilux is the next best option.
Where is the Triton... Where is the bang for buck ute!!!
We see enough of these utes plasted all over youtube, id rather see the underdogs perform.
Shame a Triton isn't in this lineup, but with a new model coming, probably worth waiting to see what the next model has to offer.
I agree 👍
Next February
Mitsubishi should focus on cars like the colt and small suvs
🤣@@abhishay22
I would have liked to see who the Triton would have gone against these newer generations of utes. Especially considering when the MR came out on top in this series of tests when it came out. Seeing how it aged would have been great. Not too sure that the new generation coming out is going to be as capable off roader going to the bigger size sometimes size ain't everything.
Amarok - 75
Wildtrak - 71
Cannon - 67
Navara - 69
D-Max - 72
BT-50 - 72
HiLux - 74
Total Scores if anyone was wondering
1:00:33
Yeah Hilux was not best at anything but still always managed to get equal top marks. Go figure who gave the scores. Jocko
@@ScottMcS lol you right
Hilux is the real definition of `let them come "
@@charlesanim-mensah359 hilux is in a real need of an upgrade it is old outdated and running off a name at the moment. It's ride and handling really are put to shame, not to mention the interior noise and its lack luster motor and power delivery. Forget the tech side because my dads new mobility scooter has more. Simple truth Toyota got lazy with this car and should have by now fixed the issues. The last truly decent hilux was 2 generations ago with the N170. After that they have just been mediocre. Maybe this new series will address some of the issues when it arrives in the next 2 years ........ one can only hope
Should have tested the 3L V6 Wildtrak instead.
Geez, Jock picking the hilux, go figure
I was stunned!
Everyone actually stood next to the vehicle they already own.
Who would have thought
This is what I call a “Genuine” review. No sponsorships, no payments and no bullshit.
The boring, predictable choice, as always.
Guys, I so value this proper testing of utes and wagons every year. I feel this is the most in-depth and knowledgeable test done yearly. Thanks.
Owned my cannon 2 years now, loving it. Send her up plenty of mud hills. use it as my daily for work. Great work horse.
Just bought a vanta, way better than my triton
I have a Cannon base model and it has so far exceeded my expectations and is an absolute beast of a ute!!
Something to note about the dmax tailshaft is that the lower spec model actually has a steel tailshaft, which is fitting to their rugged work focused design. So if you really wanted to, steel tailshafts are available to swap into the higher spec models.
Gonna be really interesting a a couple years with the GWM getting the V6 hybrid, new Triton, new Kia and the new Mahindra world Ute looking like a promising entry level competitor.
Ssangyong musso too.
Hyundai coming out with one too!

Don't forget, the Amarok is essentially a reskinned Ranger - thats where the V6 and low range transfer come from. Not having the V6 version of the Ranger probobly let it down. Its a little bit weird to compare the Amarok engine to the Ranger, since the engine is actually provided by Ford.
Think of it as a comparison in power train options. From that, we can see which engine is the better choice hands down
Engine is provided by Land Rover... 😂
@jeanmichaelc1 not really. Its Land Rover based but very different. It was used in the f150 for a long time and that performed decently in reliability
Many of fords engines are developed in tandem with Land Rover - the 5 cylinder diesel used in the old defender was ford developed. This V6 i believe is largely developed from the ground up with what they learned from Land Rover experience. Plus, pretty sure it was engineered and developed in Aus.
@The_Stylus_ V6 has been highly unreliable and the 10 speed auto has caused a heap of issues.
Was just trying to find recent videos on this subject - how convenient to have it from you guys. Great video!
Great work as always gents 🤘 Would love to see a budget ute test too - Musso, LDV, base GWM, Mahindra Pik Up etc -
Totally agree. Some of these are brutally expensive but the budget ones are almost achievable
Like a race to the bottom of the ocean LOL
Chinese will be super unreliable
Love the video guys! I work for Hervey Bay 4x4 connected with a ssangyong dealership. One thing I’ve noticed is that the ssangyong musso is really coming into play as a great towing and off-road vehicle. With 3.5t towing capacity. Can get them in a SWB coil sprung or a LWB coil or leaf sprung. With accessories like bullbars suspension available. I’d love to see next years video with ssangyong musso included. Thanks again boys!
i could watch this type of information all day long. very professional and fun
Been a huge fan of the Show for years- I love your work but I’m pretty gutted you didn’t test a Mitsubishi Triton!
Especially having the super select
Can’t wait to watch this vid, but 2024 will be a cracker!! A new triton, new Hyundai, new navara, up against the relatively new ranger, amarok, hilux, dmax, and then whichever Chinese options. 👌🏼👌🏼 epic class and comparison in a year.
I've had my gwm cannon for 2 and a half years now, 3.5 inch lift all round and 35s looks mint and goes very good lacks in power and towing but it's definitely a good contendor
🤮 GWM
How does doing the lift mod affect the factory warranty
I assume if anything goes wrong in the drive train, they could just say the mods are to blame?
Watching from Mozambique, Africa, I loved the comparison because we also use these models daily.
Thanks for the support - which one would you choose to own?
Great review guys. I tend to agree with Jocko with his ton of experience offroading, tested reliability is paramount to getting to the end of a trail.
Personal I would get the navara there really nice utes
Go the Nav, great looking ute for it’s age even before the new face lift. Have a 2016 STX and have accumulated 235,000km so far on mine with a tune making 200hp, lifted on 35’s. Mix of wheeling every month and towing a 17ft Jayco. The tune really wakes up the motor and throttle response without requiring a throttle controller. In the time of ownership (from new) I have only had 2 rear main seal replacements and the infamous leaky hot pipe and intercooler pipes that required replacing. Went with after market alloy pipes that costed approx 2.5K in total, so to be certain they will never leak again. 1K for the rear main seal out of warranty. It’s been a really capable ute, comfortable and has never left me on the side of the road stranded. For the 3.5K I have spent in the 6 years of ownership to rectify the oil leaks, I would say it was worth it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would definitely own one again unless Aus Nissan brings the big cousin Titan over, then all hands on deck haha.
I also have a 2016 stx. 243k atm. Done 3 hot pipes brought replacements at wrecker for $50. I know jp captured on CZcams promotes crg hot pipe which cost $450, platinum and others do them to. Very easy to put on. Im really happy with mine been a great vehicle good on fuel. No engine seals done. Only thing I don't like is they annoying horn which always gets bumped at the most awkward times. Might change for newer model wheel. But i vouch this is a great vehicle and more capable than others competitors in bush. They test numbers from these Muppets are stupid and predictable we know how it goes before it even starts.
Thanks for the great information. I ordered the Nav pro4x with the 1% interest finance deal and the discounted price when Nissan just had their flash sale. The cost per week is about 1/3 or more lower than the rest excluding the Cannon and that gives a lot of room for personalisation and upgrades. With the recurve tune and a good aftermarket suspension, snorkel and tyres, will be a beast. It's also one of the best looking ones externally in my opinion although the interior leaves a bit to be desired. (At least they have put in heated electric seats now)
No mention on fuel economy, I’ve owned a late 2020 hilux as well as a new navara. The navara gets nearly 250-300 km’s more per tank. Both 80L tanks. Think it’s something worth mentioning.
In saying that I do think my hilux was better to drive than the navara.
Very good piont!
2.4 litre? Needs two turbskis there's the answer
@@Ryan-fb1ot answer to what?
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to do this comparo.

The comment made a few times in this presentation "good for 10 years ownership" was my guide to selecting a new ute, I studied the market closely for three years and just recently bought a new BT50 , no regrets whatsoever, really getting to know and appreciate it. Much quicker and smoother than I was expecting, I'm banking on ten or more years use in the country. Been driving 51 years now and hand on heart the BT50 is the most fuel efficient car I have ever owned and is brilliant for distance drives, effortless feel at cruise etc. Will be investing near two grand for the aftermarket steering knuckle kit that alters the geometry and removes the bump steer problem, apart from saving tyres I'm told the front end will sit more stable on the road. Thanks for the test, I really enjoyed watching.
Love listening to jock and Jessie get into the car details both so passionate about the nitty gritty. They educate so well.
I have a BT-50 FREESTYLE 2022 - very happy with it but need to do the front end fix.
Really good review guys - very informative thanks very much.
I pick up my cannon xsr next week. My first 4wd ute and will be upgrading alot of things on it so it will be a better ride. I think once some companies figure out a tune for them they will open up a little bit more potential in them and make up for the initial laggy throttle input. But coming from a old commodore i think i will be quite pleased with it and wont be regretting the outlay that it would take for a similar spec ranger or hilux.
You can probably get a tune and a whole lot of suspension for that price.
I wish this included a Jeep Gladiator
That's actually interesting it would have got eaten up with the juice and price. Gladiators are thirsty
Great comparison guys! Very informative and comprehensive!
Thank you for all the work into making this a comprehensive video
Mr Colin C. Wow, a face from the past. He did the suspension on my MQ patrol about 34 years ago. Nice to see him still getting his hands dirty with EFS.
Hello thanks for remembering me :)
Ranger should have scored a high mark considering the fact that it brakes better than the rest. Proud ranger owner😊
I took an hour to find out Jock wants the Hilux... all good I agree its the Luxy all the way 😀
DMAX every day of the week. Bullet proof and the best value for money!!!
Not when the v6 in the ranger exists
Had my Hilux n80 since 2017 it hasn’t had one issue can’t go wrong
Amarok V6 with some mods, wheels, tyres, bullbar and a snorkel to start. Later on down the track suspension with a small lift. Perfection
I expected much more for ranger and amarok. The 4A mode is underrated. Test towing 3,5 to in rain. 4A will get you much more grip than 2H.
And the bigger AT Tires on wildtrak X with Bilstein dampers, I expected best in class comfort offroad
Nice job guys. Very through - pin pointing critical areas. Thank you
Great video! Can't wait for the wagon version. Keen to see how the gwm tank goes up against the Prado, Fortuner, Everest and mux etc!
As blue was introduced for buses and trucks 20 years ago. It’s available where ever trucks fill up.
Weve had it for many years in Europe. I refill adblue every 2000km. Should be enough for even the longest bush trip!
Love these Ute shootouts boys great job 👍 miss not having the Triton in this test but understand they want to hold off for the new one.
Why does everyone keep mentioning the triton?
@@AdmissionGamingbcos the Triton is very capable off-road. Even the old model can still compete with the pickups here
@@AdmissionGamingbecause it would of been better off-road than any of these.
Great reviews, Collin the EFS guy is a weapon, great clear explanations, hope to see more of him on here in the future
Yeah, good salesman, he could help you spend money on any of them.
Just a fantastic presentation - Well done
Something to point out with the Ranger and Amerock diffs with that that cover if you do snap a rear CV do you have the ability to pop off that back cover and push it out through there provided you’re able to access everything else without special machinery
If i were to go buy a ute right now, i would go look up a triton. With the new model around the corner you could potentially get a ripper deal.
Despite the older interior, the Triton is really a solid bakkie.
Bought a new one 2 years ago, brilliant ute at any price point. I'd recommend the GLX PLUS, as it's got the screen, rear diff lock, alloys and its pretty comfortable, only thing I'd recommend is getting a throttle control due to theag down low
Good review guys, always good to see the Utes getting stuck in offroad! 😁 🤙
Excellent content folks. Thank you. When I look at the tables the D-Max lowest score as a 6 on suspension. That has me thinking there is the upgrade that would put it ahead on the pack!
Hi, After reading a lot of the comments, I too struggle to understand some of the scoring versus
the points you have mentioned as both pros and cons.
I believe that personal preferences got in the way of a what should be an unbiased review e.g adblue really, a tank lasts how many 000klms! And a new turbo position and controller on the Dmax is more reliable - what historic data do you have- plus if the engine was so reliable before - why did they move it.
The reply comment on the V6 engine is disappointing given the crank has been revised, totally different outlook to the Dmax situation
Only my view
Good work fellas 👏
Great video guys, excellent work as always.
Next year could you include the ssangyong musso 2024 version? Would be interesting to see how the adventure or ultimate version of the vehicle stacks up in the test and especially value for money.
Cheers
I was waiting for the Triton, glad you explained why it's not on this time.
Would have been interesting to swap the ranger for the V6 version, and the amarok for the petrol version.
I think having a high ish performance petrol engine may have confused these diesel guys a bit haha.
Glad to see this type of test but shame you didn't do manaul transmission ones
Great video very informative thank you. I have the 2018 BT50 GSX 3.2TD 6spd manual and love it , its a beast . great ute. recommend it.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TEST OF UTE IN VIDEO
SHOWING WHICH LITTLE BIT WORK ON SOME THEM MAKE RIGHT ARE FEW GOOD ONE FOR EVERY PRICE ON MARKET TOday
Interesting review. I'm 100% with you on that one Jocko, I'd definitely take the Hilux for the exact same reasons.
Good vid boys. But I noticed lots of sentences cut off when going through the suspension setups. Keep up the good work! 👌
Shoutout Chris! true legend.
Great test, I keep hoping Rocket Rod will come back for some sort of video.
glad you guys finally got to test the cannon. great to see it did so well! had mine for 2 years now and its been great. ill continue to buy and recommend gwm
@4wd247. Have you thought of doing a Hilux generation test. Seeing how much the 4wd hilux has evolved from 1979 to the present?
Hey guys 👋
Love the ute of the year vids.
Is it possible, when you do the 2024 ute of the year to have 2 levels of marking, ie towing in auto and towing in sports auto (manual shift) I would love to see how they all compare in this field 😀
Absolutely fangin for you lot to test the new triton. I bought a 2019 raptor after watching some videos of you guys testing one and it saved my life.
Mental head on accident with an idiot who wasn’t paying attention video is on my CZcams, my brother works at mitsi and keeps trying to get me to order a new triton but I refuse to buy something until I’ve seen it here and tested by you lot!
Bought a wildtrak a few months ago, been very happy with it. Was a close one between the ranger and the hilux but wasn't completely sold by it's infotainment system. But without a doubt it's the vehicle of choice for reliability : )
How did the BT50 get the same value for money score as the DMAX when its almost 20k more?
I'd sake they'd be comparing like-for-like models. The BT-50 on test is probqbly top level spec compared to a mid range Dmax. When I looked at both last year there was only a couple of thousand difference in the mid range spec (favouring the BT).
Also got to love how Jocko as soon as he got the slightest wheel spin in the ranger was like nope better lock the diff in and everyone else just spun through it ....... has Jessie taught you nothing 😂😂😂😂
Thought that was a little weird and unfair lol. Should have gone again and seen how TRC took it up cause I'm pretty sure it would have done it effortlessly lol
Yes, notice how the girl kept going without the locker (to prove the Hilux didn't need it). Now they can say the Hilux is better... meanwhile Jocko didn't even try
Pretty sure traction control turns off when rear locker engaged in the Hilux as well - they forgot to mention that
@@ausim1000 actually I think the mighty Ranger is one of the only 4wd utes that still lets traction control work while the rear locker is on...
Awesome Video, love watching to learn the latest. Have you guys looked at the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup?
I'm actually surprised the nav didn't get more credit I think it's a good looking ute and with that coil rear end its a game changer for the tracks
Engine aside 👍
They didn't give credit to the Nav in many areas. It has a dedicated Towing mode to cater for the gearing and engine revs. It has a 5-point linkage suspension system with a heavy duty thick swaybar in the rear. With the 2 mode springs in the rear it rides comfortably and tows great when loaded. I use one for towing and wheeling. I love it.
Nissan always scrimps in the main areas, it's a upgraders car.
Its a shity deal that the nav they tested isn't even a "full" production product it's an aftermarket option done by Premcar an Australian company sperate from Nissan.
Great vid guys, Navara still for me tho. Interested to hear more on brake packages and rear main seal issues on them though
Yeah imma np300 man too, rear main seal hasnt been a issue for me just a hotpipe upgrade was and a cheap upgrade too
They also blow up mate
So do the Fords. Would not touch one. Nav’s don’t tend to blow up from brand new though.
@@125kingo125 im on my 2nd np300 never heard of them blowing up... but definitely throttle body and hotpipes are weakest point
They don't blow up they have been a very durable engine for many years in Europe.
the navara also has an auto cooler from facrory! not just the gwm
Navara any day my 2019 nav has got over 200k and goes awesome and infotainment is easy to use
Agreed....Makes one wonder about the rubish 500 k km remark. @4wd247 if you tell yourself a lie enough you'll start believing it! Oath mate
We got the Wildtrak X. Really good drive, lane assist correction and auto start/stop is a bit to get used to. We've had ours for about a week and about to drive it from VIC to QLD in another week.
I disabled auto start/stop, found it to be annoying. Does yours have a weird thing where the interior ambient light doesn't always turn on when driving at night?
They missed the mark by not or at least having the option of the v6,perfect vehicle for offroad/touring with that engine.
@@Hi_its_Kartikmine does the same is there an permanent solution for that?
@@tedeganagondinot sure, but I’m hoping it could be fixed by a software update. Not too bothered by it as it only seems to happen once a week or so with mine - so just a minor bug to deal with for now 😁
love this review
Watching this and loving it, even though we don't get any of these vehicles here in the states LOL
I picked up a base model Cannon very recently, and im glad i did. I couldn't afford a more expensive ute, and I gotta say, value for money wise, you can't beat it. From a mechanics standpoint, it also looks super easy to work on. Yes, it's a bit sluggish and laggy on the throttle, but I think a throttle controller would make a night and day difference to this vehicle. As for the suspension, one thing to note is that the XSR has the same suspension as the base model but with all the added weight of steel bumpers and roll bars, i test drove an XSR and i gotta say, the base rides a lot better being lighter. That being said, most people are probably going to upgrade the suspension anyway no matter what they get.
Just slam your foot to the floor every time you take off.
That is all a throttle controller does.
Value for Money and cheapest are two very different things. Cannon isn’t that great value for money but it’s certainly the cheapest here.
@@grego4835yes a throttle controller is a waste of time and money. I’ve been saying that for years. My vehicle has built in throttle response control in the form of Terrain Response.
@@jerrymyahzcat Its the best value for money out of the segment. Sounds like you just want to justify paying tens of thousands to have the "correct" badge on your car.
I'd enjoy watching the Team testing a Cybertruck. Not because I believe it would do great or under perform in some tough tracks, but I'm curious about the Stainless steel panels would handle impacts. Bent panels are one of my first concerns going to a trail.
The fact a 80lb bow shooting a arrow with a broad head bounces off it plus being bullet proof I’d say they are tough
@@BogDustForBreakfast It's not the hyped exoskeleton Tesla promoted, but a standard unibody construction with bolt on Stainless steel. And due to that, would be interesting if other Automakers would consider, bolt on Stainless steel panels for special edition off-roaders.
The first cyber trucks that make it to Australia will be way over a million dollars secondary market and instantly parked in showrooms. It will be a long, long time before we see them on a 4x4 track here.
It has a large stiff aluminum chassis with heavy body panels strapped to it, I don't know if I really want to take that off-roading.
@@gpaje My curiosity is around the body panels durability in the trails. And a possible application towards other off-roards, as some aftermarket Stainless steel body panels. As an off-roader, the Cybertruck due to massive weight, long wheel base, range, as repairability, It could be a terrible recipe to take it to some remote tracks.
nice show guys... i own a VW 4x4 (Mk 1 Touareg V6) it's now 18 years old... and the rear upper tailgate glass is a bit dodgy... Thats it... its got hi/low- with FCR diff-locks... Can't pretend to be surprised that Jocko would get the Hilux. He loves the almost complete lack of changes over the many years.
The I in Toyota stands for Innovation...
Me, I'm actually quite interested in the Amarok v6. looks very cool!
Why change what isn't broken. It's reliable and good. You don't need technology just for the sake of it. Technology is just prone to breakage. KISS.

Yes, the GWM is initially laggie but those power outputs aren't hideous niether, there's more on tap here than your hilux had Jocko, but everyone towed with them and loved em.
Value for what you get, the GWM has to win hands down once you consider if you placed some aftermarket suspension on it the price is still far cheaper than anything else in the line up.

I've had the Cannon xsr for almost 5 months now (AKA P-Series limited in south Africa) and my only complaints are that it is a bit under powered when fully loaded and the suspension is a bit bouncy at times. Other than that its been an absolute dream! I've done quite a few tough tracks around here as well as some tough off-road game drives with zero issues.
For me, the fact that it comes from the factory twin locked with a snorkel, good all terrain tyres, bash plates, built in 220V inverter with outlets in the cabin and the engine bay and a winch too in South Africa was a deal breaker. I'll have to see in years to come how the reliability holds up
For interest sake, why didn't you go for the Mitsubishi Triton?
@@andrevdmerwe3107ive checked out both, being 6 foot tall i couldnt fit in rear seats in the triton.... dont own a cannon but its a great looking ute plus twin locked standard, just lacking power, they have a v6 version in china apparently coming to oz
I have the LS, with a Stage 1+ and that has solved ALL the power issues and throttle lag. Next I am looking at getting an EFS setup to stop the bouncing... so far I am VERY happy with the GWM
I'll never buy a commie car.
@@andrevdmerwe3107 I went with the GWM over all the other brands mostly because of affordability and the bang for your buck factor. All the aftermarket accessories I would have installed on the other Utes already came as standard on the Ltd/ XSR edition. (mainly: snorkel, winch and tyres)
Don't right off adblue. It becomes available in containers with filling nozzles and every fuel station and supermarket sells it over in the UK. I guess that will be the same over there.
Yeah I live in rural OZ and the fuel servo up the road has it on pump, plenty of hgv use Adblue here so getting hold of it isn’t a problem at all.
Team Isuzu Dmax here💪
Expert Diesel "Engine & Gearbox" Proven durability
Regarding dmax airbox needing to be heavily modified for a snorkel is false. If you fit a factory snorkel a replacement airbox comes with the fit kit with the inlet hole on the side rather than the front. But another fantastic comparison video guys. Very in depth 👍
Surely it's about time in Australia to do some reviews of the American pick up trucks that are coming on our market more and more commonly. It would be cool to see them against maybe a 79 and aussie style vehicles of the same likes
A friend of mine has the latest Chevrolet ute. Loads of power and very comfortable. Perfect vehicle for towing large, heavy loads. If diesel cost wasn't an issue, they'd be awesome.
I'll go with the nav, my dad owns one for work going from provinces to provinces, it has been really tested. With good maintenance, it can stay with you for long.
Love the vid but when you guys are swapping or talking about what truck you are in I’m getting a little lost should put up a little logo to what truck is being reviewed, please, but absolutely love your stuff ❤
"Mum, can we get a Hilux?"
"No, son, we already have a GWM at home!"
MUM ITS NOT THE SAME FEELING
Can't wait for the new Triton.
We can’t wait to test it either
