From the show, we were told that to become a true alpha they must have a clean slate and Derek clearly doesn't. Also, if they made that change last second, means Derek will most probably somehow return in the next movie.
It was never about having a clean slate. It's about force of will and being a good person. This is the moment where Derek really takes a stand for the right reasons. Whereas before a lot of his fighting was because of fear, here he's willing to die to save the people he loves, and he doesn't flinch in the face of it. It's really about coming full circle and showing that, while Derek didn't have what it took to be an alpha before (as evidenced by the trainwreck that was his time as an alpha in seasons 1 and 2) he has finally learned what it means to be a leader and to be an alpha, and he's earned that. And the willingness to sacrifice himself is a part of that.

You have to really dig into the narrative to make it sensible.
I remembered Derek and Scott were basically the same person on different paths; having different ways of life.
Scott was able to maintain his righteousness, but if he lost Allison earlier he would’ve been the same as Derek. The movie clearly indicates he never really got over her.
Derek from season 1-6 is such a development it literally could be two completely different characters.
As I said noting the parallels between Derek & Scott it’s honestly not too surprising. Considering his ***massive ***growth combined with such a righteous act.
Not only once but at least four times he’s risked everything for someone/something. It was always a change all decision and he was usually the one to make it.
Protecting Jennifer from Boyd and Kora, but still not having the heart to finish not only his **beta**; whom on an instinctual level is more so his **son**. Even his beloved younger sister whom he **presumed** was **dead**.
He would later give up his alpha status, **permanently** for her.
To put in perspective their are people like Peter and the beta that challenged Deucalion who would simply ***never*** do this.
I believe he more so ***tapped into*** his TA ***potential*** right before death. As we how saw the flashes of it with Scott until it finally happened, but wasn’t actually fully fledged TA.

I also personally believe in growth and redemption. Person who killed someone still has a chance to become a better person. Maybe Derek reached high level of soul power to become a true alpha. Moreover Derek's eyes were once more time yellow, tho he still had killed people.

As far as we know the rule of a true alpha losing their potential if they kill probably still applies, unless that can be bypassed and we just haven’t seen that yet. Not to mention a true alpha as stated only appears *once* every hundred year or so

I thought that a wolf couldn't become a true alpha if they killed someone, hence the rise to power by their own will. Clearly Derek rose to that power even though he had killed before so maybe there might be more to it. The only thing I can think of it being possible is if Derek was redeemed through his sacrifice and became alpha one last time or he too might even come back to life like Allison did. Who knows.
i like to think that there he wasn’t a true Alpha but got his mom spark back. remember he didn’t lost his alpha rank because it was stolen from him but to save his sister, and primarily when he stole the Alpha rank from Peter, it originally belonged to Talia because Laura hale inherited her spark when she died so technically it was always Derek’s birthright to have that power in him, he just got to rise enough power to get it back we’ll thats just my head canon

They should have never made this movie the budget and the acting was terrible im as nostalgic as any hardcore teen wolf fan but they should have just left it where it was or plan it out better. It took me a long time to get over how they ended the show so badly just for them to make a movie with an even worse ending Scott was bald, Alison turned into american dad, no stiles, derek somehow turned into a true alpha even though hes killed before just to have him die.

I always said it, Parrish is the most powerful character, even being nerfed since we never saw his full form (such as the wall where he fights the beast), here we see how he easily kills the most powerful villain and on top of that Derek even when he is an Alpha again. Although Derek's death hurts, I think it was unnecessary, since, I repeat, Parrish could have done it alone.

They're right. Y'all don't remember lore at all. 💀 There can't be two true alphas. He did lose his alpha status saving his sister but he still had that spark still in him before he died.
@@Deerfield5 that's not how it works either tbh. They said 3 things. 1, not killing/taking the life of an innocent. 2, once every century or so. 3, sheer force of will. Derek only fit one of thsoe things. It just felt like a writing mistake.

And to yall saying it was specific to scotts character, yall werent paying attention. The not taking the life of an innocent part was spoken in general not just for Scott's principles. I mean c'mon Derek killed Paige, Peter ( and then stole his power) and then Boyd, turned Jackson (which activated his Kanima side and went on a killing spree), turned Erica (which got her killed also for his own selfish reasons) and yet somehow he gets to become a true alpha? @@remixprod.7683 Deaton did say that so that's a loophole they need to explain and a werewolf can only become an alpha through a sheer force of will so the werewolf needs to draw on its own power.
@@remixprod.7683 I believe it's speculated to happen every 100 years or so, but I believe Derek's mother was also a true alpha and evolved werewolf considering her reputation and power was known to within the supernatural community especially among werewolves.
