I use 1/4” the most for SA cos I have an edge foot for that and an 1/8” for topstitching for both my industrial and domestics.... couldn’t live without them! 🤗🤗🤗

Sorry I'm confused, the compensator foot is 1/8th of inch but you said you use a 3/8ths seam allowance? Is that because you use a smaller seam allowance for topstitching. Very new to sewing thanks!

That is correct! I don’t use the compensating foot for the seam. I use it only for the top stitch. But I leave it on and use the edge of the compensating foot for the seam allowance (mine is a perfect 3/8”).

also, I have purchased a used industrial machine and I don't know what kind it is. I cannot find a label anywhere. is there someway I can find out what machine I have? I have looked at hundreds of pictures of machines, but cannot find the one I have. Just thought you could give me suggestions of where to look. thanks.

What’s the best machine for a beginner to intermediate sewer looking to make bags and other heavier weight projects? I just finished a sewing class where I designed my own bag and patterns and sewed it on a domestic machine with a few problems. Any suggestions?

If your starting out I'd reccomend getting a vintage domestic machine. I have two of the old cast-iron Singers from the forties and they can push through a good amount. I wouldn't do heavy leather or upholstery but 90 percent of my bag projects are no problem. They're relatively cheap on CL.
