I have been using this tool kit for three years now (watching in January 2024). I did a LOT of research before I made my purchase, and I am glad I did. Overall, I have been very happy with my kit. I keep it in my vehicle and have used it on the road and at home. My son-in-law thinks it's really strange when we are working on a project and I pull out the Pittsburgh kit because the toolbox in the shed is very well appointed with really high quality, Made-In-USA, hand tools. But he and I agree that having such a comprehensive set immediately at hand saves us both a lot of walking back and forth to the tool shed. Plus, the blow molded case lets us see instantly what tools have been put back and what needs to be located at the end of the day. This is good because the number of small tools I have lost (sockets and extensions) in the past is ridiculous.
First, the down side. I am not really happy with any of the tools inside the front cover. The wrenches are complete junk. There aren't enough sizes to do some jobs, they aren't comfortable, and the finish is poor quality. They are not even labeled with the Pittsburgh brand. Almost immediately, like the day after I received the kit, I went onto Amazon and got a much more comprehensive, higher quality, set of ratcheting combination wrenches and a tool bag. I added items to the bag as I identified deficiencies in the original set. It doesn't come with slip joint or grove joint pliers, a breaker bar, or a hammer, for example, so those were early adds. The included set of screwdrivers work all right, for the most part, and come in sizes to suit most purposes. But honestly, the handles are too small to fit my hands. So I bought another set and added that to the bag as well. I can say this about the handles on both the included pliers and screwdrivers. The finishes are easy to grip when your hands are slippery. They are kinda rough, which gives you traction, but not so much that they are overly harsh on the skin of your palms. I just hate trying to wrap my hands around those skinny, little, screwdriver handles. Actually, I think I use the included screwdrivers more than the extra set because they are convenient. And my son-in-law's hands are smaller than mine and he uses them all the time.
One thing that my early research told me was that this set travels well if you keep the foam pads that are placed in between each tray layer. They were, however, very flimsy and the first day I was using the tools it was breezy and I had to chase after those foams pads when they blew away several times. I tried using the kit without them and many smaller sockets came loose from their mounts and every time I opened the box I had to put a couple back in place. After that, I glued the foam to some drawer liner material and retained them in the box. That solved both problems.
Now, that's two paragraphs of what I didn't like about the set. But as I said in the very beginning, I actually like the set very much and use it all the time. As for the sockets, I love that they are set into removeable trays that I can set out to make whatever I need available at a glance. Their quality is great, and I haven't had one break yet. The ratchets, while clearly not as sturdy as those in my main toolbox, have been quite adequate, and in fact, have a higher tooth count than many others that I own. I don't have many of those higher tooth count ratchets in my possession. They are more expensive and I haven't seen the need for them. At least not for what I do most. When I have an application that requires an extremely short throw, I have gearless ratchets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive. Also, the selector switches are backwards from all the other ratchets I own. That means I am constantly accidentally setting them wrong. No worries, though. It doesn't slow me down enough to worry about it.
The sockets (which are labeled "Pittsburgh Pro," by the way) are great. When I am using this set, I have yet to be left without a socket that I need for any application. There aren't enough extensions included in the kit, so I have a few in the tool bag. I can't remember which I felt I needed, but it was not very many. I have been VERY happy with pretty much everything at the second and third layer where the ratchets, sockets, and extensions live. I'll bet that at least 1/3 of the sockets have NEVER even been used by either me or my son-in-law because there are many sizes included that you just don't need for 90% of the applications I have come across. Especially in the selection of deep sockets. Frankly, I don't use them much. I don't worry that I spent too much money for a tool set with tools I have never needed. Some day, I know I am going to need an odd sized socket and I'll bet anything it is already included in this set. And this tool set was very reasonably priced, so the "extra" sockets feel like a bonus.
I am convinced I chose well, and if any of my grandkids decide they want to work with their hands like I did, I would not hesitate to purchase this kit for them. Of course, I would also get them the auxiliary tools like I have in my bag, just to be certain that they get off on the right foot. I've read that some people have a problem with the plastic case breaking or the handle pulling off. I haven't had the those problems, but it's possible that my set is not subjected to the same extremely heavy wear and tear as others. I do use it regularly, but certainly not daily, I have yet to break anything in the kit, although the presence of a Harbor Freight store only a few miles from where I live WAS a contributing factor in my purchase decision. So, if anyone is wondering whether or not this is a good buy, I would have to give it an unqualified thumbs up, and do it with a smile on my face.

The only thing I can say negative about this kit would be that I'd personally replace the needle nose and diagonal cutting pliers with some Channelocks. They are the same shape and size so it'd fit in the kit nicely, but the harbor freight ones have let me down before. Channellocks are the best bang for your buck, and yes they're about 18 dollars a piece they will last forever. The rest of the tools are completely adequate I think, at least for a "shade tree" mechanic or general home owner.

I have the same set. I bought it in 2008-ish. It has a few redundant socket sizes. I've had a few issues with certain sockets not fitting the fastener properly. 16mm comes to mind.
I believe most of the tools are made in Taiwan. I think the screwdrivers and wrenches are better quality than what is available individually in the store.
I've since sold the teardrop ratchets and replaced them with the swivel head ratchets.
I've used the Allen and torx sockets way more than I ever thought I would.

gotta say the socket set looks really good, and ive heard a lot of good things about them.. personally, i would buy another set of wrenches since those dont look like id have too much faith in them. the ratcheting wrenches from harbor freight work really good, and the long handled set of regular wrenches is also a great set. i have both. i used the 1" long handle wrench to tighten bolts on same beams in my basement. the bolts are telephone pole hardware - and i was literally hanging off the wrench with my feet off the ground to see if they would hold - they did with no problem. what more can you ask for

I actually love and use the 1/4" drive most of all. Most people go to 3/8" drive the most, but I like the 1/4" because it can get into tight spaces. Also another HUGE factor for me is that it keeps you from wrenching on a nut or bolt too hard. You're a lot less likely to strip a bolt or nut if you can only apply so much force to it. My vehicle has a lot of 8 and 10mm nuts, I find it considerably easier to work with those with a 1/4" than the 3/8.

  • @superdog1964
    @superdog1964 Před 10 měsíci +1

The short version of this is easy. The sockets and ratchets are worth the cost, even at $250! There are no skips that I can remember and it comes with the extensions, swivels and adapters you would ever need on any job, including breaker bars. The quality and finish is awesome. The strange part is that I have never seen Harbor Freight sell the same type/style of sockets in other kits, sets or bundles? They are great and are labeled "Pittsburgh Pro" with an excellent chrome finish.
There is also a large amount of specialty sockets. Allen heads, Torx and both slotted and Phillips.and the sockets with a reverse Torx ( E sockets I think?) for any nuts/bolts with the double star type heads The quality of these are also grade A.
I'm sure we all know that out of 301 tools there are a lot of tiny things that run the count up. In reality, once you take away the screwdriver bits, small Allen head wrenches (4 sets, 2 metric, 2 SAE) the actual count is much lower. The screwdrivers and pliers are OK I guess? They are better than the cheapest brands Harbor Freight sells but no where near Icon quality? On a 1 to 10 I would say a 5 or 6 at best. They will do the job but I am not sure for how long?
The wrenches are CRAP! This is such an awesome tool set for the price and it really hurts the overall score of this set. They will work I guess? They look like a super cheap set made in China and the fit and finish are TERRIBLE! I'm really not sure what Harbor Freight was thinking because it really knocks the overall impression of this set down a lot until you lift up the first tray and see the other tools.
I bought this set about 8 years ago on sale. I would have bought it long before that but whenever I saw those wrenches I assumed it was junk until I actually saw one open with all the trays out. I told a few of my friends about this set. Two of them are guys that fly around and work on specialty machines (CNC units) and there has yet to be a situation where the tool they needed wasn't in this set? While this is very heavy, the weight is offset by the fact that it is the only tool set they ever have to use and the days of checking in 4 or 5 tool boxes and their luggage are gone. Other than the garbage wrenches, everything else is still the original tool included `at purchase.
Again, even if all you do is keep the sockets and ratchets and scrap the rest? It is still a GREAT deal that I have yet to see being offered by any other tool seller. Just buy it you won't regret it, EVER!!

This seems like a pretty nice set. The pliers look exactly like my USA made Craftsman. The rest of it bares a very similar appearance. I bet a bit of investigation would show that these tools, are made in the same factory as many big name tool brands, who have outsourced manufacturing to China/Taiwan.

Merriam Webster defines review as: an act of carefully looking at or examining the quality or condition of something or someone. You can look at and examine the quality of a tool without using it. Really craftsman sucks now 90% of tech wouldn't whipe their ass with what craftsman is producing these days . But what you are seeing more and more techs with a few hf items in there box .there quailty is improving they are alot better then they were 10 years ago. If they would close the plant in chaina and solely make and delvop tools in Taiwan they could be on par with gearwrench .

I purchased a bahco tool set similar to this one, it's reasonably priced and very good quality. I've used the sockets etc countless times fixing my motorcycles and my dads van and they're very good.
