The people that make onscreen have to do a virtual audition that's approved by the Voice producers, and also they will take certain people in based one their background story as well. So in the auditions the judges have usually 10-20 people in their team selected out of maybe a couple hundred applicants that were approved for the second audition beforehand. Of course, the judges dont know. Also, shows like these intentionally let some people who are bad singers through to that 2nd phase in order so that it goes viral for more publicity. I mean, the Got Talent shows do the same
