As a Californian, yes the lines are always long at in and out but they move pretty fast and worth the wait! 😁
I too thought I could stay overnight at that Camarillo Cracker Barrel. First ever “knock” on the window at 1:00am Scared me to death. The security guard was so, so nice. After explaining there is no overnight parking, and me telling him all of the VanLife CZcamsrs say I can....he says, “follow me”. He takes me a few blocks behind a movie theater with several RV’s and semis. It was well lit and felt safe. Although he was beyond kind and helpful, I could not sleep a wink. Lesson learned “plan ahead” and confirm overnight parking.

I went to Chick-fil-A for the first time ever, last week (Seattle). 43 cars ahead of me. I stayed. It was worth it.
I totally understand how you feel about the seaweed. Used to terrify me when I was a kid on the lake with my uncle. It's a primal fear because the water is deep, dark and you can't see beyond the weeds/plants.
We've found that campsites can be difficult to get- but we've also noticed a lot of last minute vacancies as travelers don't always end up where they expect to be, when they expect to be there. It looks like it all worked out and you still had a fun trip. Thanks for sharing!

As usually we enjoyed your video. Last year we went from Canada all across USA for a 16000 miles trip from Chicago all the way on Route 66, Utah, Yosemite and we spent a month in californie (not talking about an aborted stay in Calistoga because of the fire) but yes we tasted in-and-out burger as well as sleeping in Walmart and Cracker Barrel! Nice souvenirs !!! Thanks for sharing!

You guys, California kinda sucks for van life, especially along the coast, as you found out, and I found out a few months ago. That doesn’t mean you can’t break the rules and have a good time, but waiting for that knock on the door absolutely sucks. I’m sorry you had a less than awesome experience, but at the same time, it was nice to see someone have a similar experience. Good luck in your future travels. I really enjoy your videos.

Did you try to stay at the new Cracker Barrel in Oxnard? Had I known, you could have stayed at our house in the Ventura harbor. Cozy bed, hot shower, great food, dock in the backyard with boats, free. Would have loved to meet you! Darn! You must have eaten In and Out in Ventura, our home town. You didn't miss much in Solvang. It's a tourist trap.
The “No over night parking” is mainly for 18wheelers. They don’t won’t the big trucks and trailers taking up parking spaces.
