- Update 5/20/14: I really miss this bike. It was an awesome runner and never gave me a single problem. Perfect trail/play bike. Ran perfect just how i would believe a new yz 125 would back in 1983. I really regret selling it now. and this is more than 2 years later guys.
Update 2/9/12: Just sold the bike for $550. Really need cash. As much as i hated to sell it i feel i got great use out of it. It was a beastly little old machine. In the end the bike was a little underpowered for me, but never failed me and was a great machine. I would definatly recommend this bike to anyone!!
Update 6/12/11: Ive finally taken the bike out twice and it runs fantastic!!!! Needs fork seals but other than that its great. I love riding this thing. Feels good to get on a bike again. Enough power for the type of riding i do. If anyone knows where i can find a 6 cup paddle for an 18'' rim let me know. Im going to oceano dunes and i want to try it out there. No hard riding as a 125 is not very good for sand. just to play around on.
This is my 1983 Yamaha YZ125. The bike has not been in service since 1989 or 1990 i believe. I got it for free from a friend. His grandpa bought it new in 1983 so its been in his family since new. When i got it home i cleaned out the carb, put fresh gas/oil, a new ngk plug, refilled the radiators, and refilled the trans with gear oil. started in 4 kicks. Not bad!! In this video I had not started the bike in a little over a month or so. I didnt have the choke on either and it was dead cold!! I just need a new chain, brake lever and an air filter and I'll be able to test her out. Another old bike saved from the junk yard!!! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I had an 82 YZ125 as my first bike...brings back memories...those black rims look great.
dude i got a 1980 IT 125 and it runs like a champ. old bikes are the best
I had a '83 Yamaha YZ 125. Loved that bike. I also had a DG exhaust pipe on it as well. Makes me wonder if it's mine. I traded mine in for a '86 YZ 125 at Downers Grove Yamaha in Downers Grove,IL. I miss both of those bikes. I would love to get both of those bikes again as well as my '78 YZ 80 and restore them to new showroom condition. Brings back lots of memories.
nice old yz that thing is in good condish. My first bike was a 1983 rm80 the first year for water cooled i wish i would have kept it. I now have a 01 and 03 yz125
i could smell it, when you fired it up!.. nice.
That is one badass looking Yamaha you got there :D i wish that my Suzuki rm 125 one day would turn into a YZ 125 like yours :D
If you still are seeing these hear messages good for you kewl give it some life man .good work that dent in upper pipe broken clutch from a jump that sent my 103 pd. Body off into the valley of death for recalls peace I
Ment it good work I always miss that one
The best colour and ride!nice
yea i like the rm. i personally would have bought an older 250 2 stroke but my cousin sold me his and in payments and im glad i got his. I love the way it handles tons of power and its got the modern look to it. He sold it to me for $950 Im a 2 stroke guy always have been always will be!! The cylinder has 1 more bore left so at the rate i ride i figure i got another 6-8 years with that cylinder maybe even 10 years.
mid to late '70's and early '80's Yamaha dirt-bikes are my favorite..
83 had the best flowing cylinder many put them on 84 and I think 85 but I could be wrong about 85 still though I really like the look of the older yz 👌
i have a 1978 yz 125is awesome
2 stroke power!!!!! me to I have a yz 125 but its a 2006 :)
holy crap it smokes as muc has my pocketbike =D
cool bike man..i love motorcycles !
real good shape
good luck with that and who knows you might want to keep an eye out for cheap cylinder on ebay or at junk yards and keep it for life
wow that a really nice bike you have
Year after the moved the radiator off the forks. Made a big difference in handling. I think the the YZ came in second to the CR125 in the shootout
just watching this video makes me want my old YZ back
This was the last year of the infamous yellow jacket colors.
The following year 84' colors were red seat n' frame w' white
Tank and fenders.
Consider yourself lucky cuz' they don't make them like they used too.
@FratusDillon well first off, the only dirtbikes ive owned were 2 strokes. i had a 1983 CR 80 for my first bike and rode it for 2 years on the trails. When it came time to sell it, it ran just as good as when i bought it. The same goes for the 2000 YZ 125. I rode my bikes mostly mid rang rpms and top end rpms. Also i used a 32:1 premix ratio and changed the plugs after every 3-4 rides. A 4 stroke is better for trails but a 2-stroke will be fine. You'll get to know how to ride it for the trails.
thats in pretty good shape
Miss my old bike......thanks for the vid bro.
We bought My girlfriend's son a 1984 YZ 80 last April and it's so reminiscent of this bike. It really makes me regret selling this bike. Hands down out of every bike I've owned this one was my favorite
@@vwmetal66 that’s exactly how I feel, rode mine back in ‘89 in Long Beach CA, GF had me sell it grrrrrrrr lol who knows maybe we’ll find another one out there! Take care Johnny G...
2:14 "dang that smells good!!!" great job bringing it back to life bro... just picked up one of these to race the AHRMA Ultima class... very excited!!
nice bike
hey man cool bike i have an 83 only its the canadian version red and white. gas tanks are super hard to find in good shape for these 1983 is the only year that will fit not 82 not 84. i just found a mint nos tank cost me 200. it'll be nice to go for a ride without having to fill up the oil tank i was using as a fuel tank haha!
man if u got that for free u got somethin nice there that thing sounds awsome and has lots juice to as for the oil leak i would take the engine out and have it split and new gaskets put in or if it uses a sealant do that
Did you realize what kind of gem you were in possession of and still have this in this condition? :O
looks awesome. get some black fork boots on it
I raced one of these back in 83 and loved it was an awesome bike
Dam going to offer double that if not more and shipping to oz!
Bought a 83 yz 125 from my cousin 2 years ago, motor is basically junk, a guy i work with saw it one day and said he has the exact motor just needs piston rings, gasket and couple other little things. Said you can rev it to 1400 rpm and balance a quarter on it! Hes giving it to me for $100! Im so excited to get it running again.
Sounds like it's be easy to get running Again and for the price it aint bad. These little motors were really good. I had a 2000 yz125 before a i had this bike and the power felt the same. This was a good motor. Very crisp throttle response. Good luck and post a vid when you're done
vwmetal66 hey are you selling this bike i'm offering $600
AstroZombiz Sorry sold it back in 2012. It was a Great bike i just had too much shit. I got $550 for it as i said in the description. Id buy this bike back for $800 if i saw it for sale again. I always buy stuff and sell it for way less than what I bought it for. This bike was the only exception as i got it for free. In total to get it running and registered i payed maybe 90 bucks. I really do miss this bike. It never let me down and was great for general trail riding since the suspension was old technology and soft. It rode like a trail bike with the power of a 2 stroke.
hey man, old bikes are awesome, i have a 85 rm 250 and that bitch rips, i rode my buddys 99 cr 250 and my bike seems to me like its got more bottom end pull and about the same top end yank
Good job on the bike!!! i like seeing old bikes rebuilt especially 125s and 250s lots of time and effort put back into that....
@Mattiecakes254 Yes you are correct. And the right side is the correct side for this bike. Look at a 1983 yz 125 and you will see. Besides you can't put a rear wheel on backwards. if you try you will soon realize that the sprocket and brake assembly wont let it it be put on backwards.
cool
@kimballer126 thanks man i figured the bike has a yellow and black scheme so why not paint the rims black!!! I just used the dollar cans from home depot
@danthehitman741 I got the bike as you see it. here the only thing i did cosmetically was paint the rims and exhuast system. I also gave it a good bath :) I guess the bike was techinally running, just needed the carb cleaned out, fresh plug and fluids and it started right up. in total i have about $80 bucks into it including the registration. It got some good riding time yesterday.
@bikercc well the carb had a lot of oil in it but i just did a quicky clean. i take carbs apart often so it was no big deal. It has excelent compression. like i said in the description, all i did was fill her up with fluids, new plug and a carb clean. really simple man
nice bike hippie!
Thanks lol
I ran it either 32:1 or 40:1.
@seelder thats just like asking why have such an old car. I personally dont need to be fancy, like the simplicity of older machines, like to be different, like to learn, like to have fun, and like to give older machines a second chance at life when nobody else will. I also like the fact that they're rather inexpensive to get as well. In the end its just personal prefrence.
ive got a 1982
💀💀💀💀
Cool bike bro :)
It was a great bike i like the classics alot more than the newer bikes. 80's generation is my particular favorite for lots of off road machines, dirtbikes, quads, atv's. Before i sold it the bike ran great and it was the first dirtbike i had been on in a little over 2 years. You never forget to ride man. I went on a rode like i had rode a bike the day before!!! It was so much fun!! but yea i needed money and had too many bikes so all i have now is my 97 rm 250.
We used to have one of these growing up as kids, but it got stolen from our garage in the late 80's..
)~;
EvLoutonian :/
I owned this bike a long time ago...it was amazing..the power band was cool as hell..when you hit it the whole character of the bike changed..i recently bought an IT 200 for 200 bucks and fixed it..since it's been sitting so long you should change the reeds...when i took mine out for a first good long ride one of the reeds snapped off cause they went brittle
I rode mine for 2 years without a glitch. Just had to check gear oil occasionally because it had a very slight leak. The suspension was super soft but i liked it especially out on the desert trails of Johnson Valley. I miss it for sure.
@ChevroletTuff Thanks man. My first bike was an 83 cr 80 so we kinda started off on the same foot. I use to have a 2000 yz 125 the same as your 01 i believe but sold it to fund the engine rebuild of my 65 bug. After that i got back into riding and got me an 85 atc 200s. Then my friend gave me this 83 yz 125. Then i bought me an 82 atc 250r and finaly an 81 atc 250r. all run great except the 81 which isnt running at the moment.
@jonnybioyilusm If you are talking about the actual tire, its fine, they are not directional tires like a paddle. Now if you are talking about the rim being on wrong because the sproket is on the right side, there again its on just fine. This is how these bikes are. Look at where the chain guide is on the upper swing arm. If you pause the video at 4:36, on the lower left corner of the screen, you can see thats where the chain goes. And yeah i know about the smoke. I use a 32:1. Ima go to a 40:1
choose your friends wisely! Amen
Well 2 strokes smoke. That's a 2 stroke. I image you are good to go. I would love to have one of those old yz's!!!
Best bike i ever had!
Dude, awesome save! Nice way to preserve a great vintage Yamaha!
@OxfordRiders It's not on backwards. Bikes were not always the same through out the years. I got a comment like this a while back. If you pay attention really carfully at where the chain gaurd is on the swing arm and at 4:36 you can see the sproket on the motor. Besides you cant put a back tire on backwards the brake and sproket assembly wont let it be put on that way
did anyone notice the rear wheel was turned the wrong way, the sproket was on the right, not left, side
If the conditions are just right and tunning is really good, like jetting clean gas and a good plug, then it should be no problem. Im use to kicking over 250 2 strokes and they require a bit more kick so im just use to kicking hard. finding the G spot before you kick is always important. 125's are always cake to start though.
ITS CONAN!
@Sledluva213 either the carb is really dirty and clogging the jets or it's running lean and the jetts need to be bigger. It's not sputtering and spiting is it??? If thats the case then it could be really rich. You should put a video up of it. It would help out alot if he rode it with and without the choke on. More than likely its gonna need a good carb cleanning. If its still acting up try playing with the jets. bigger or smaller main and pilot, depending on how it's acting after the cleaning.
Nice ass bike
stunning.
@FratusDillon well im guessing everything about the 2009 yz is a lot better than its's 26 year older brother but it still shouldnt be that bad. The newest yz 125 ive owned was a 2000 and it handled great. This older yz seems to have just as much power as the 2000 to me. I still havent taken this bike out on the trail to see how it handles so i cant compare the two on handling.
That thing wasn't dead is just hibernating !!!!
killerkork true lol
lets see a riding video
@playstationRLZ thats cool man. I like them old bikes. even if it's aircooled. Yours has the full floater in the rear right??? Ive heard thats a pretty good suspension setup especially for old bikes. You cant go wrong with the oldies
yea i know that. i just dont ride enough to have to do top ends often. If worst comes to worst i'll just have it resleeved. Im sure i can find a good cylinder on ebay
I have a 82
Sounds good nice bike! i love old yz's..good deal too free is the best! hah ✊✌
2:15 i always to the same thing, sniff my hand after putting it by the silencer.. i love the smell of premix.
@xIISnipeouTxP Also you can have the 125 lowered or have the seat shaved down.
@vwmetal66 haha thanks for playing back with me your cool :D
*knew keyboard is messed up
Awesome ... How you get it to start up on 1st kick ??
@bikercc well you cant always trust what people say man. Um i really dont know what else to say except to get a new top end. it seems it would be worth it
@wantabefarmboy i just used the dollar cans of flat black from home depot. It's not high heat or anything but it has held up pretty good.
@yamaha04rider wrong man this is the ways these bikes are.
@playstationRLZ thats cool man. and yea i still have the 125.
@vwmetal66 yea its got the full floater, it isnt too bad, the furthest i jumped it was about 35-40 feet about 20 feet in the air and its smooth, still got that 125?
@vwmetal66 ohh... my bad
damn dude wish I new you had this for sale damnit been looking for one of these or a yz100
@FlyHighDirtJumper thanks man and yea ur probly right about the bars. I really dont care. it runs and runs great at that and thats what makes me happy about the bike. thanks man
I'm looking for 83 yz125 radiators if anyone can help me out
@FratusDillon It was not hard at all for me to learn on a 2 stroke. When i say plugs i mean spark plugs. There's only one and they should only be about 2 bucks each. You can change it your self. You can find out why i change them often. It happens to lots off us. But if your bike wont start dont be scared. just put a new one and you'll be good to go. Do some research
@defkon99 Thanks man, just registration which was like 40 bucks, a new spark plug, chain, break lever, and airfilter. so like 85, 90 max I got the bike for free. Thats all i got into. It screams!!! I get lots of compliments when i take it out
Those things were slow compared to a KX, RM, especially the CR. I might be thinking of an 81 or 82, I don't remember. I would still chew off one of my fingers for one in mint condition, and I would have sold my mother into slavery for one in 1983! Great bike!
Hey have you gotten a new bike? I would love to be out there running in the desert. Just have to be careful if you break down take supplies and extra water...the desert can be a brutal place if you get stranded
I had a 97 rm 250 for about 4 years but i just sold it as well to purchase a small VW powered sand rail. But yea i always carried a backpack with water, extra plug, basic tools, a strap in case i had to be towed or tow someone, zip ties. the extra weight never really bothered me. also i dont like riding in the summer. I just dont like the heat so i go in the fall/winter/early spring time. Nicer scenery in those times as well.
is that what you used to cross the border with?
you in la? cali?
Idle or air screw im assuming... What seems to be the problem
why is the rear wheel on backwards?
you got some work to do
+woodyate kingdebary is king of restore
why are people saying the wheel is on backwards? If you watch the video you can clearly see the front sprocket on the same side...my IT200 has the chain on the same side. I guess it's a yamaha thing
its really an old bike thing lol
I had an 83 YZ 125 back in 1985 I was like 14 and it was way to big for me .. . And it was white and red as the Yamahas was in Europe back then ..
Christer Stefansson it was really one of the best bikes and best deals I've ever had.
you are supposed to let that warm up or it will get locked up
What oil does it take
@zthomas95 hahaha yea man its the sweetest smell ever especially since this was klotz oil. I use maxima castor 927 now and its pretty close to klotz. I always hated yamalube. Good oil though, just a bad smell.
Would u ever sell
what are you running it at? they like to run at 40:1 and 38:1
How much gears in this bike? YZ125 1983
hey man, my buddy just got one of these, runs on choke, but wont run with out choke, i was kinda wondering if you know what wrong? and it will run with some throttle then bog out. if you know please write back thanks man
i was wondering if that had a radiator on the front handle bars or not? I have a similar bike i am having trouble Identifying the year
Matt Morgan Nope. 1982 was the first year that they became liquid cooled and those were in front of the handle bars (a one year only thing).
1981 was the first year of Yamaha water cooling the 125 only, radiator on triple clamps....
Ini motor ada lg kah part nya d jual ?...........hahaaaaaaaa
