DIY Vintage Apothecary Shop Sign || It's 'carved' out of FOAM!

  • Like Ariana Grande says, "I see it, I like it, I want it, I make it" or something like that. Since I finished my workshop, I've wanted a fancy carved wooden sign for the door, but if I'm not going to buy fabrics at full price, I sure as heck ain't going to buy a custom made sign. Especially when I can 'carve' one myself out of insulation foam and my trusty Dremel.
Is this a great tutorial? Not exactly, but I think I came up with some good insights if you should want to make your own dark academia, apothecary-esque home decor, or perhaps a cosplay or LARPing village store.

I’ll be posting regularly about my different projects and you don’t need to do anything to see that feed.
And yes, you can donate, and for $2/month, you’ll get behind-the-scenes peeks at my upcoming projects, have a voice in what I should try next, and get your name on screen!
But most exciting, you can get your very own digital pattern of my Box Bag Pattern
AND I’m doing pre-sales for my DIY Box Bag Sewing Kit. The listing will close at the end of August, and orders will be shipped in September.
I’m so excited to share these with you as I’m so proud of this pattern.

Some of the best how to tutorials are those that show "this didn't work so well, so I tried -"
    Thankyou!

Those are the ones I learn best from. I always think it's a little sketchy when people get things right on the first try every time 😒😒🤣

Oh my goodness Katie...it looks amazing ❤. Resembles a vintage wood tavern/pub sign and I'm here for it. You're so talented 😊

This looks great! I got a great mask for using for these projects. These little particles will never leave your lungs. Stay safe girl!

10/10 safety tip! I definitely wore a good mask for this.

You can carve styrofoam with Lino block carving tools. Also sandpaper is the easiest way to smooth it. Styrofoam is great for props, but hadn’t thought to use it on a sign. Guess I know what I’m doing tomorrow!

I've thought about trying lino carving techniques and printing but with styrofoam. I think it would be really cool to do block printing and I now have tons of foam to practice with!

Good news is that it ended better than it started, so that was a win! Thank you, friend!!

Turned out pretty good! Maybe kinda flooding the carved out bits with paint would also help hiding the rough texture?

I know one no is looking at me, but when I get hit in the face with a block of Styrofoam is when the neighborhood is going to have a block party. It's just my luck! 🤣

I kept thinking she was going to add more dimensionality to the raven either with hand carving or a paint job. Maybe in the next one?

Let's put talents in quotation marks! Or call them 'attempted talents'. I'm just confident enough to try just about anything and untalented enough to get it kinda right. It's a neat balance.

Using foam is a perfect piece to practice on. I will encourage you to use a wood canvas in the size of your choice next. It will help you learn how to put pressure. If you have a wood burner use it. Using gold leaf is fairly easy but very flaky. The rub and buff might be more to your liking.
If you can do it on the foam board, you can do it on anything.

    • @KatieMakesStuff
      @KatieMakesStuff  Před 8 měsíci

This is absolutely my goal someday, and using rub and buff is a great idea! Thank you!!

@@KatieMakesStuff girl! Using a wood canvas is no different than using a foam board just a different tool. You can use transfer paper to copy the image on the wood and then burn it. You use a stencil to pencil in the image then burn it. Just don't use a wood burner on a plastic stencil. Lol

You are so awesome and my kinda maker girl!! We all need a dose of your "go for it"! What kind of base paint did you use? Spray paint melted one of my Styrofoam projects😬 💕from KS.

I used interior house paint for the gray layer. Nothing fancy but it seems to be holding up outside pretty well.
