  • In this episode, I look at my tarp and bivy setup a year later and discuss the issues of using a tarp and bivy on backpacking trips. #tarp #bivy #backpacking
    The Paria Breezy Mesh Bivy is currently unavailable. But, below is the link when they get more stock

    I have had similar experience with my Paria bivy and the Paria 10x7x5 tapered tarp during a severe thunderstorm with wind driven rain and also a long drenching rain in overused campsite which resulted in which a pool of water under the 'bivy. In both cases I was, as you say "dry as a bone". The 10x7x5 Paria Tarp only weighs 10 oz but it does not have nearly as much room as your setup. I also pitch the bivy to the side so I can just barely squeeze my pack on the side. I have since upgraded to a 9x7 dcf tarp (5.2 oz) which I've modified with mosquito netting sewn around the edges (I had to spend my stimulus on something). I use that tarp with a dcf bathtub floor. The whole rig, including tarp, netting, stakes, tie-outs, and bathtub floor weighs a hair over 1lb. I'm liking it, but crawling bugs, slugs, and mice can still get to me. Also, I think somehow the mesh bivy was warmer. Anyways, thanks for sharing. It is great to see others who appreciate the aesthetics of tarp camping. I've got three of them in my shelter arsenal now and I have to struggle to decide which one to take.

    Crow, have you considered going to a 10x10 tarp? For a tiny amount of extra weight, you'd have both the space from the higher pitch and the greater rain protection. Also, consider silpoly, which should stretch less.

  • @cathyajames
    @cathyajames Před 3 lety +1

    Crow, you may want to consider a video that looks at the trade-offs between hammock+tarp and bivy+tarp. In some ways these systems are very similar, and in others quite different. Most of your viewers are going to be more familiar with tents than with either the hammock+tarp or tarp+bivy options.
    You've got some very pro-hammock backpackers in your circle. Get Krusty or Almost to represent the pro-hammock viewpoint and have a little debate. :-)

    I still prefer the tarp and bivy setup myself. I use the Gossamer Gear Twinn tarp and a Yama Mountain Gear bug bivy which are 17oz by themselves. Even with the continuous ridgeline and tie outs it's stupid light and offers plenty of room for one. I use shock cord and modified mitten hooks to secure the bivy to the tarp stakes which cuts down on weight since I don't need stakes for the bivy with this setup.

    Strange that you posted this as I have been thinking of trying something just like this except using my hammock tarp with doors and the inner mesh from a trekking pole tent. Could either use a trekking pole for the mesh or run my ridge line under the tarp instead of above and clip the peak to it. 🤔

    Nice setup! I think my next big purchase will be a tarp setup. I like how you use your umbrella...good idea. I've been looking at the Borah Gear DCF Bivy + HMG Tarps. I've been hesitate b/c the setup weighs more than my tent and worried about ticks in the warmer months...although you can't beat the versatility of a tarp setup.

    • @ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING
      @ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING  Před 3 lety +1

      Awesome! Thank you! I almost bought the Borah Gear bivy. It looks great. Take a look at the Paria one as well. The reason I went with the Paria one...which may be out of stock right now... is the width. It is wide and roomy. Plus, those walls on the top and bottom act as a shield for rain, if you don't have doors on your tarp. I absolutely love this setup. I use it all the time, when I want something super light. Crow

    Gear explosion on the outside bahahaaha. Great informative video! I learned a lot about the tarp set up! Kudos to you for going with this system. I don't think I could ever do it myself, don't like the bugs as much crawlin all over the rest of my gear. I do agree a tarp with doors would probably be a little more dry and secure against the elements, especially with a bunch of wind. Btw your text at the end collides with your logo/sub button. Take care bud!

    I've been considering something similar for a lighter type system but that can fit at least 3 of us. MSR has a mesh tent that is like s bivy and is 64" wide. It's only a little over a pound but is like $200+ And is need to get a tarp too. All good things to consider though!!

    I have pared down my tent weight in the last year, but I feel that I could go much lower with this. I solo frequently, and this just feels simple. I have never used a tarp to sleep outside. I am with you- I HATE bugs, especially ones that want to crawl around in my personal space. Do you find this easier to set up in uneven, rocky terrain? How much room do you generally leave between the wall edges and the ground when setting up your tarp?

    • @ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING
      @ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING  Před 2 lety +1

      I really like this setup. I find this particular bivy has amazing room. It is wide and long. Plus, it has solid ends, so the rain doesn’t come in. But, I may upgrade the tarp to a Dyneema fabric with doors. This particular tarp is 8X10. So, when I set it up the short way, I have a lot of room. I would like one that is 10X10 for more room…but, it would be a little heavier. I use this setup all the time. Crow✌️
