00:40 BEHAVIOUR
It is not at all easy to spot a water wagtail. It is a bird living very covertly in the densely overgrown shallow waters of the muddy margins of ponds or wetlands. A better chance than to see him is to hear his voice, which resembles the squeal of a pig.
01:02 FEEDING
The water warbler feeds mainly on small animals, insects, and to a lesser extent also on green parts of plants and seeds.
01:13 BREEDING
It also nests twice a year, and when sitting on 5-10 eggs, both parents take turns for about three weeks. The chicks leave the nest soon after hatching and are fully feathered after about 7-8 weeks.
01:33 DISTRIBUTION
The water rail is a partially migratory bird. He lives in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Most individuals fly south from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia for the winter. The population of Western Europe and the British Isles is stable.
