I Disabled Active Sound On My BMW i8 And The Sound Of The Stock Exhaust Might Surprise You

- BMW likes to pump artificial noise into their cabins to make their cars sound better or louder than they actually do. They kick things up a notch with the i8 that not only plays pedestrian warning tones but also fake exhaust sounds. I'll have a separate video showing exactly what that speaker sounds like coming soon.
In the interest of full disclosure, while the exhaust sound you're hearing in this clip has not been edited, it is the combination of two separate recordings: one taken from the interior and another taken from a microphone attached to the bumper near the muffler tip. While these sounds are in theory identical, the acoustics of the inside of the cabin are different than outside and the sound resonates somewhat differently. Because of that, you almost get a harmonizing effect in the video that makes it sound a bit better than it would sound outside the car because outside the car you're only going to hear the muffler.
But wait, there's more! You're hearing the sound as it sounds about 6 inches away from the muffler. While the sound is accurate, the volume is not for obvious reasons. The car is actually much quieter than this. That said, it sounds good and with a better exhaust, would have the volume to back the sound.

The hate on the artificial sound is a little pointless after hearing it's not so bad without it
BMW says they don’t fake it; they just enhance what’s already there. I don’t know how true that is. Next week I’ll be doing the same video but only with the sound of the internal and external speakers.

That makes no sense. If the sound is good without the fake sound then why add the fake sound at all, and also then the hate for the fake sound is _MORE_ justified!
It's just a fact that there's no excuse for being so spineless as to add fake sound played through the speakers. All manufacturers have the ability to let in a pleasant amount of engine, exhaust, induction etc. noise. It just takes a bit of engineering hours and designing the sound deadening properly, maybe adding separate through points to let in more of certain sounds/frequencies.

You should see the comments that CZcams auto-blocked. Some straight venom. I think a few are grumpy that I combined the sound of the interior cabin with the sound of the exhaust. Or maybe they think it sounds terrible.
Why toyota? Its the best selling and best brand in general in the world. And they are #1 by reliability. Where is bmw when it comes to cars? When it comes to motorsport? On the bottom of european crap... even bmw use toyota robots to make their ugly cars. 🤣

Very underrated car. Pity you didn't also do an external microphone only recording, to let us hear what it sounds like outside without the speaker. To all the complainers, you would be surprised how many cars on the road use external speakers...including Maserati :)
I actually just got done recording the other video where I show what JUST the speaker sounds like and because of some of the complaining in this video I also added a clip showing what just the muffler sounds like mic'd up. Oddly enough, I also mention the Maserati diesel sound generator.
People will appreciate this car someday

@Darwin Watterson same but i don’t appreciate it cause they fooled us for the exhaust and making it sound loud from the drivers seat cause it makes artificial noise when you put it into sport from the inside through the speakers

According to BMW literature, it is simply designed to lower noise. Just like emissions, they all need to go down. The manual says it reduces sound up to 8 decibel. It does this by creating a reverse pulse that negates the pulse coming out the exhaust. I dont think it generates any sound at all.

facts! i really don't see why it gets so much hate. i mean the artificial sound the car has is better then having a complete silent car. i just don't think the i8 is worth 100k.

Honestly I still think it’s the time to buy, especially the 2014-2015’s. Even if these aren’t incredibly fast, they’re uniqueness is going to result in them shooting up in value.

3 cylinders is half of a straight 6 so no surprise it sounds decent
I've got zero experience with 3 cylinder engines so it was a pleasant surprise for me. I was expecting it to sound like a Geo Metro.
So applying a regression method to all the Porsche variables its sounds like 1/2 of Porsche ;)

We can definitely open up the exhaust to get the volume up and I think that's all the car needs. It's never going to sound like a Ferrari but it sounds good.

If you get a Bluetooth OBD module and the bimmer code app you can code it out. I unplugged the amp

For the interior there's a couple ways of doing it. You can code it out with an app however you need to shut it off again every time you start the car. I believe you can also unplug the box. For the outside simply reach up around the speaker and unplug it.

I'm not aware of a way to do it permanently that also doesn't disable the entire stereo. What most do is use Bimmercode and disable it that way but you need to do it for every drive.

artificial content in bikinis... 🤣
and btw i love the (hater)comments from guys who never sit in a i8 or even can effort one. the acceptance out in the streets for i8 is much more
than for a porsche or ferrari... and not to compare with this wanne be R-audis - the nicest thing i found was back in 2015, when it was new,

I think all hope on that one is gone. They stopped making them earlier this year. Honestly that's probably for the best. They were killing the value of the used ones because they were subsidizing the leases on them so much.
How can I disable the active sound system on my i8?
There are a couple different ways. You can code it out but it returns and needs to be shut off again when you restart the vehicle. I believe you can also simply unplug the module though this may or may not also disable the interior speakers altogether. For the external speaker simply unplug it.
The problem is that it's just a glorified mini. 😕

I think the uniqueness of the power train is what makes the car as special as it is. It would maybe be interesting to swap the BMW 4 cylinder in there though.
