      He already has. In the 'clubhouse' episode preceding this one he says that he doesn't like content creators 'pretending' to qualify for the open when they know there isn't a real chance - but that he'd support something like a 'break 75 in open qualifying.' He was the one who actually suggested that the narrative of the video series Rick makes isn't about actually making the cut.

    This week in Rick Shiels Podcast - Rick travels out to the South of France to test cars which come at a starting price of £100k+ and gives them a bit of an advert for the first 5 mins.
    Also, no golf isn't expensive.
    You sure you're scale of expense isn't a bit off there? Merc aren't sending you on these trips/sponsor you (or BMW with Pete) because they are looking to attract people on a budget. They're after people with a large amount of disposable income. Because you need that to afford to play golf.

    On the expense of golf point, yes it is becoming to expensive the green fees are becoming insane. Here is prime example Prestwick St Nicklaus is £80 quid a round, actually quiet reasonable okay?? well next year they are doubling green fees to £160 a round why you ask? foreign visitors aren't playing it because they look at the courses around that area like Troon and Prestwick and Turnberry then see st Niclause is as cheap and say oh that must be rubbish then, In fact it is a very good course. Kings barn £400 a round now? yes there are cheaper courses you can play but lets be honest as a golfer you want the experience of playing these great courses. when does it stop? £1000 a round?

    A few years ago there was a massive fan backlash against Guy for dismissing Petes attempt to qualify for the Open. Pete had a better chance than Rick does! But now Guy is in favour of Rick attempting to qualify by framing it as a 'break 75'. If all Rick wants to do is break 75, perhaps he can play the courses on days when there is no competition. The whole conceit of break 75 is a bit meaningless anyway. It doesn't matter if he 'breaks 75' or not.

But hey they’re throwing in the cart. Wow! Course B is even crazier, whereas $50 with cart is now almost $300. Unfortunately it’s driven by demand and all the courses charge whatever they can. In regard to the distance chat, it is now more important than ever for a "normal" golfer to get into the speed race with proper training. I'm 47 and play interclub here in NZ. I'm currently playing off a 6 - 7 handicap. As you move through the handicap range and play different grades it is very noticeable the distance difference as you play better and younger people. It feels like people are hitting it further, which would appear to go against the stats that keep coming at us. Also to note is the short game tends to be quite sharp.
    With the cost of golf. It is definitely getting too expensive. The cost of the current AI Smoke Driver is $1270.00NZD. Iron sets, TM P790, $3000 NZD. Those 2 prices are what I would consider the norm if you wanted new gear. Our 2nd hand market is still very overpriced, so it's not that easy, even for someone getting into golf to do it cheaply. I've been playing golf for 8 years or so and my membership has increased year on year apart from 1. A bucket of balls at the range is now $20 when it was $12 when I started. There appears no end in sight to the constant price increases.

  • @keithward.504

    Totally agree on your points about golf being expensive, I started playing during covid like a lot of new golfers! I had an old spalding package set I used and tried to upgrade it bit by bit so went for a putter and driver off FB market place as thought these where the most important clubs to replace. The next year I got a set of irons and the year after new driver and woods, if I got them all in one go it would have been crazy money but doing it like this it didn't seem as bad. Also joined a local golf society so get to play 5 or 6 really nice courses a year for relatively cheap. I want to join my local club but the joining fee is huge and then membership on top of that will be crazy so that's a year or two off now but I'll play a slightly worse course until I am able to afford it so there are ways to get there but people just need patience 😂👍

    Rick, if playing in a qualifier is something you decide to do, it'll be a fun watch, regardless. With regard to the costs associated with golf, it has been my experience here in Florida, USA, that Greens Fees themselves, are much elevated. Usually, in May (June at the latest), as it's hot and humid here through September, the rates drop immensely. Also, the snowbirds (people who live in Florida from October through April) leave, and demand drops, so do rates. That has not been the case during the past two summers. Rates drop from "Winter's" high, but not down to Summer's low. As far as equipment, I fast forward through all of the ads during televised golf, as they continue to insist that this club or ball will improve my game. I myself have always bought used clubs as they were more within my means, and only moved, for instance from my Taylor Made Burner with the old small head after hitting my buddy's Epic. There was no denying that my equipment was an impediment to my game, so I bought a new(er) driver, and some of your videos were helpful in the process, but I found an Demo of a very recent model, and it's great. I'm therefore not going to hit anybody's new irons, as I see where this goes, but my Callaway Tour X's work fine when I swing well. I know my yardages, and I know that if I'm slicing/hooking the ball, no new iron's going to be the remedy. My putter also works as well as I do. Hence I feel the same about "fittings". Of course there are better angles for my clubs, for my particular swing, but perhaps my swing adapted to the clubs? We can choose, as Guy said, to make this part of the game as expensive as we do. As for greens fees at a course where one can at least get a true roll out of a putt, this is big business, Florida's got a lot of courses, and while many seem to be going under (or falling to crap), the many remaining one's are increasing prices as their costs are increased, and everything's inflating. Supply and demand and the costs of golf courses/clubs doing business are increasing the rate for players for sure. I see it this way, however, if I get 3.5 to 4 hours of entertainment, and it costs me $50, that's not a bad deal. Enjoyed the video.

    Guy's exactly right about the affordability of golf. Where I live in Northern Utah, walking 9 holes at perfectly respectable courses costs around $16. I have a set of TaylorMade r9 irons a buddy handed down to me, a Ping driver and woods that I bought on clearance a few years back, and a Kirkland putter that was on sale for less than $100, and I probably play just as well (i.e., rather poorly) and have just as much fun (i.e., lots) as I would if I spent thousands on equipment and fancy courses. As so many other people have said, if you're going to spend a lot on golf, make sure most of it's on lessons, because that's the true difference maker.

    Watching this as mentioning about golf becoming more expensive. Equipment wise to get it… materials etc. a handicap of 8 self taught pretty much with prob only 3/4 lessons in 30 years(but that’s a different convo!). But I will say when it comes to course prices as a society packages.. or at times it shows the grass is greener on there golf course side. Booking a society 4-24 weeks in advance 30 people playing) £35! go on golfnow £27.50 on the day..
    this the norm for an apparent premium time to book in at.. courses seem to be of settling club house food and Bev sales by increasing the grass t and trees that will always grow.

    Golf club prices are bad. Yes you can get used options or OTC, but overall they are silly. Greens fee prices as well as prices to use a cart (buggy as you guys call them) are also ridiculous. The latter comes down to supply and demand imo. In the US, many courses had closed pre-covid due to multiple reasons. Now there are less courses to play and more people taking up the game. It sucks for the consumer.

    I’ve moved to the ten year rule for clubs. I replaced my 9 year old driver a couple years ago. If you can allow yourself the discipline to use your equipment for a little longer then you don’t have to be weighed down by the price of equipment. If once every 10 years you buy a new driver then the price doesn’t hurt so bad.

    For the distance discussion: I think first one needs to figure out whether driving distance is the main issue for the score. If it is, you want to increase the average driving distance. That could mean get a better strike, better swing path, better fitted driver. Increasing clubhead speed is not the only way to increase distance, and certainly not the only way to increase it on average.

    • @PetSKi67
      @PetSKi67 Před 25 dny

      Creating more clubhead speed will help throughout the whole bag and give more zip on the shhort irons as well. Paddy Harrington said it, essentially you want your irons to spin and stop as close as possible the pitch mark on the greens.

    As far as golf being too expensive and the comments about, you don't really NEED any of that extra stuff. The issue is that golfers don't need it to go play, but they do need it to have better technology, to shoot better scores, to improve their game. It absolutely makes a difference. Golf is too expensive for many people (me), in that they may never be able to afford, club fittings with new clubs, consistent lessons, better courses to play on. In the end I feel like you lose potential life long golfers, especially in the beginning because the sub standard equipment, and high costs make it so difficult to improve.

    Obviously to play without financial worries is different than having to take care of the monetary.
    That said, Lee Trevino and Gary Player both have told tales of the past, where they were playing their back against the wall as young lads agreeing on skins and bets with people playing a grand or 10 grand a hole with just a ten dollar note in their back pocket. I believe the pressure they’ve put theirselves in grew their selfc onfidence and esteem to focus and play their better game before the success on tour.

  • @PetSKi67
    @PetSKi67 Před 25 dny

    Sure, the new big brand stuff is getting expensive. And if you want something you give up something else.
    For me it was limited edition irons. They were twice the price of normal high-end sticks, but I really wanted them for my 50th. Had to wait another 4 years to be able to buy them. On the other hand I play 14 years old fairway woods and a previous demo driver head with a 2nd hand shaft that suits my swing. Could not be happier with my gear. But could as well play 2nd hand top brand irons for seventh of the price I spent on my current irons.
