A brilliant, insightful and refreshing talk by Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan & Lt Gen Shankar. It is indeed a wakeup call for Bharat; as we bear not only the responsibility of our own independence but also that of our neighbourhood.
I am sure that we are working on ways and means to overturn this Chinese 5 finger policy; and bring overall growth and progress to our region.
    जय हिन्द ! जय भारत !!

Gen. Chauhan would like Nepal to be an independent country and at the same time be part of the Indian defence "ecosystem".
This is a very good example of a mutually exclusive proposition.
This is what happens when foreign policy prescriptions are made on the basis of purely military views and concerns.
As a soldier this statement may make sense.
But as a civilian the question to ask is- What are India's foreign policy objectives in Nepal? This is a question not even India's foreign minister can answer. One, of many, reasons why India gets itself in a knot with its neighbourhood relationships.

From Nepal here, I think the Agniveer program (which is a good program for youth), should be open to Nepalis. India needs to increase its influence in Nepal. Without Nepal there is no Bharat or Bharatvarsh. I also believe that India should have the courage to incorporate Nepal into its union.
Nepal is so reliant on Bharat that not having direct voting rights and representation in New Delhi is simply undemocratic at this point.

Brother we are one civilization separated by short sighted leaders. The definition of Bharatvarsha as in Vishnu Purana includes all the land from Himalayas to the southern ocean. I know many North Indians are disrespectful towards Nepalese and many Nepalese hate Indians. This hate is encouraged by many foreign forces that wish to keep our people small and divided. Mark my word: The day India and Nepal unite we will together become the strongest force in Asia. Please spread your positivity amongst your people. I look forward to the day when we willingly unite as one nation. Jai Shri Ram 🙏.

Supporting Nepali Maoists was the naivest thing India could do.
From MoU between them and Indian government- as said by previous Indian Amb. SD Muni to
helping them out and sheltering/training them.
In fact, previous Indian Foreign secretary Amb. Kanwal Sibbal has said the following on record :
"Whether India did the right thing in helping the Maoists(chuckles....) to come to power under the garb of democracy...will remain an open question! But the King was always problematic for us."
No wonder the Nepalese view India in suspicion and always blame India. Because in their eyes, the current set of Nepali leaders (Maoists, Congress, Marxist-Leninist et. al.) are responsible for the dire state of Nepal. They, one way or the other(main being the 12 point agreement in Delhi) were backed by India.
India lost/still looses sense of all strategic/diplomatic bearings.
The Chinese need not do much. They simply point fingers at India and say "see...." and the naive Nepalese fall for it.
Like Lt. Gen. Shokin said, India is taking, what it considers its own backdoor, very very lightly and not considering the "common man's" mentality.

Applying the Agniveer program to Nepalis who are foreign citizens is a huge mistake and we will certainly pay a steep price for it. Penny wise, pound foolish applies here totally. I also fault the military for not vehemently opposing this stupid idea. It is not just a question of soldiering as we already have a huge population of Gurkhas in India, but a question of our influence in Nepal as these veterans are a huge, valuable and potentially very politically strong asset inside Nepal. We should also increase the syncing of Nepalese economy with India's and one way is to run an LPG pipeline from India into Nepal, preferably in the hill areas where the political power is stronger. It would be another way to tie them to India's economy as it is prohibitively expensive to supply LPG from China or build a pipeline through Tibet Same thing with kerosene and petrol. Right now they are running with the hares and hunting with the hounds at our expense. Building a railway line to Kathmandu should have been a priority both to increase Indian tourism in Nepal and also increasing mobility within Nepal.

So , let me get this right
Even after taking care of lakhs of families in nepal for last 80 years we are not able to generate support or over whelming pro india sentiments.
Solution:- let's keep doing the same thing which has not worked for last 80 years & will keep costing INDIAN exchequer billions of dollars each year in pensions
I am quite sure this is exactly the thing we should not do & I am glad govt is not doing this.
One of the biggest anger Nepal has over india is exactly the thing we keep giving them money & act like big brothers.
The anger is a result of insecurity.
Also how bad is our policy
We want to build an IIT campus in remote Africa but we are not interested in building IIT, IIM campus in nepal & Sri Lanka.
Integrating them with us in economy will go long way rather than just giving away billions each year in pensions

This is a policy from the days of the East India Company. Why abandon a policy that was bequeathed to us by the British themselves? No way Indians can do better than that.
Traditions matter. Especially British traditions on military and foreign policy matters.

First of all, you have forgotten the advantages of mountain warfare. Mighty Himalaya is always a protection to India. The present Indian Army is not afraid of China. The width of the Himalayas from south to north varies between 125 and 250 miles (200 and 400 km). Their total area is about 230,000 square miles (595,000 square km). Can the Chinese army get the required supplies in case of a war? One artificial avalanche is enough to cut off PLA supply through passes. So you are exposing your ignorance about Mountain Warfare. " Huang Guozhi, senior editor of Modern Weaponry magazine, has said that the world’s largest and most experienced country with plateau and mountain troops is neither the US nor Russia but India. India has the world’s largest and most experienced troops trained for high-altitude battles, a military expert affiliated with China’s leading maker of equipment for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has said, adding that mountaineering is an “essential skill” for each Indian soldier deployed in the mountains" You raise problems without any solution. But there are people in India who give solutions to the problem.
