It was a great moment to have our American Themneh folks in Sierra Leone. Gbafo-gbafo (welcome-welcome)
    MY SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS:
    1. Our American Themneh folks though an inprompt visit they should have been welcomed with our local traditional beating, dancing and singing by our local Themneh women folks. Nevertheless, the chiefdom speaker with his team were even capable for the purpose.
    2. The chiefdom speaker narrowly forgot (though he started...) how they should have welcomed the strangers with anment (water) ye (and) artorla (kola nuts) ka (in) anporthi (cup) likewise how our American Themnes brothers and sisters should have been thought in a traditional way of response. I was totally not impressed on the opening conversation.
    3. Gender Balance was totally frowned at by our Chiefdom Speaker. Am sure there were traditional female heads and young female folks to be included in the program. While giving his introduction, I saw women as passers-by, why were they not called upon to join that blessed moment?
    4. There were few dictions and phrases of how to greet in Themneh. I was expecting them to thought few Themneh phrases to increase the confidence of their trace and trate.
    Phrases like:
    a. Naparee (plural-good afternoon or good evening)
    b. Naderaye (plural-goodmorning)
    c. Momo (thank you)
    d. Orwawo (goodbye)
    5. It was unfortunate on the part of the Chiefdom Speaker for failing to supplied the local Themneh names and their meanings.
Names like. Ya. Rukor Fonthi, Ya. Borthi Gbla, Ya. Norkor Kanu, Ya. Burah Commeh, Pa. Sorie Kamara, Pa. Lamina Baila, Pa. Thimu Sankoh etc.
The most unfortunate part of the rest was the names supplied were Arabic and Themneh Royal names which were poorly pronounced and wrongly supplied with the right meanings. This would have been a good traditional setting moment but was poorly done.
    6. Where were our local foods (foo-foo, coconuts, hens etc.) to be welcomed these American Themnes so that they would have felt home?
    7. The name SINNEH is not a royal traditional name but just a common Themneh name. It was poorly misunderstood by the Chiefdom Speaker and totally pinpointed by the translator.
    8. To see and to feel is different.
To be pointing and naming fruits by not seeing and feeling them was not impressive.
    * I laughed when the traditional women they met in the stream overheard the statement of the translator in English and they mentioned in Themneh L1: "Did they say when someone killed/catched fish from this stream will die...?"
What is the traditional irony behind this statement from the local women? Too doubtful to get it all wrong but all this misinformation started by the Chiefdom Speaker.
Nontheless, the navigation by our American Themneh brothers and sisters was a fantastic research. Am proud of them to have the same DNAs with us. Thanks to the organisers and hosts at Lokomasa. To God be thy glory for all of these happenings.

The reason they struggled with giving the meaning of Salimatu is bcos the name is not African. It has Arab origin and was Africanized tru adoption of islam. The true meaning is only known to people who understand arabic.

It’s strange the Themneh chief is speaking Krio, not Themneh.
It’s nice to hear the Muslim call to prayer.
It’s sheer superstition to believe that there’s a Muslim “devil” who comes out on Friday.
We want African Americans to be proud of their Islamic heritage first, then their African heritage.

    • @chronicle-oddities
      @chronicle-oddities Před 2 lety +1

Well done, if you think that the temne just drop down from cloud to land of Sierra Leone then you're wrong. The temne are descendents from Mali empire and the Malians are 100% Islamic name given to their children that means the meansThen check out history why Salamatu because

Am shocked that these brothers & sisters r being given Arabic names instead of Timne names. It's very unfortunate that their Euro-American names r being replaced with other colonial names. Very unfortunate. Amir, we can do better than this. The Chief, lyk most Africans bearing foreign names didn't knw the meanings of the Arabic names that he was dishing out. Salmat & Umar r Arabic names & NOT AFRICAN. The Timne people cudn't even pronounce the names correctly.

That is great you have found your way home, lively. Please know that the word Temne are ancient yesrealite children. Many of the village names or city are of Hebrew origin. Sierra Leone means, lion mountain an the area where the house of Judah had elements. Research the various names, it proves the identity of the Afrikans. My great grand mah mah was a Mende woman brought to Antigua in the Caribbean as a servant slave. We are the children of the ancient path ways of the scripture . Shalom
