  • This is a leisurely look back at banking operations and careers of 1967. A trifle slow-paced, we edited the full 30 minute version down to 15 mins. You’ll see a short clip of an IBM System/360, banking data center, plus 1960’s office attire and several fabulous “Mary Tyler Moore” hairdos. Originally designed to be an educational documentary for those considering a career in banking. How much do you think working in the banking industry has changed since this film was made?
    We hope you enjoy!

8:20 "Most major business organizations have a well-planned training program." Wow, this *is* a historical film!

Crazy seeing how much staffing resources devoted to customer service side. Very little of that today.

You may recognize the voice of the narrator of the data processing segment. I think it is Vic Perrin (the "Control Voice" of the Outer Limits series of 1960's).

I sent this off to a friend of mine who started in banking in the 70s. I’m certain she’ll recognize all of this.

My sole complain is that you edited it down to 15 minutes from the original 30. Even if it wasnt necessary, the extra footage is appreciated as its still history.

I recall that era, where if customers protested about information errors, the comeback line from the bank: 'It must be a computer error.' What the bank employees didn't want to admit to the customers: Errors made with inputting information.

"... gave me the feeling that all banking would soon be done by electronic machines".. well, I guess that feeling was about right. :)

7:00 I was Mr. Murphy when I found out Bank of America doesn't accept cash for deposit (for family member's account) -- they do take check, but not cash

Bank of America can be very screwy at times.
A friend of mine working in receivables was depositing a bunch of corporate checks amounting to over $100K, where the BofA teller asked that person: "How much 'less cash' do you want from this deposit."
My friend was flabbergasted that the bank teller was stupidly trying to get my friend into trouble with what could be construed as company theft or embezzlement.

They've built banks on every street corner around here shutting down useful services.

Customer lines at banks back then had 'multiple lines ques' as opposed to the modern era 'single line que.'

*Your video material is very interesting* . I am grateful for sharing and disseminating it. As a researcher I would be interested in having more information on the sources from which it is extracted, to better understand who produced it, in order to place its industrial and commercial purpose.
Does it come from the world of education, or from that of industrial / advertising dissemination?
Do you have a site where you can get more information?
(C.B.A. seems to be a small part in major joint venture)
    Thanks. Best regards.

Hi San Sone, thank you for your interest, you pose some great questions. Unfortunately, the original film has no ending credits. Segments of the film refer to a workbook titled "Careers in Banking" by the California Bankers Association of San Francisco. Probably same date as the film 1967. Sorry, that's all the info we have on it. The booklet and film are made to go together, with Q&A segments in the film. We don't have the booklet ourselves. Good luck on your research. Maybe CBA is still around... ~ Victor, CHAP

Wow! Did I detect a significant amount of sexism in this?
Too bad those "programmers" had never studied queueing theory.
