    It's not about how expensive cost of living is. It's about the purchasing power of an average citizen. That's what they should be asking instead.

    • @Spacemongerr
      @Spacemongerr Před rokem +88

      Yes, but most people have no idea what their purchasing power is relative to other countries, if you are lucky you will get "umm I think we can buy more/less things?" So it would be a bad video.

      While you are theoretically right, practically no one calculates their own purchasing power and could tell you that on the street, so there is no point asking around for people's purchasing power.
      You would have to look at the average wage of Singaporeans in some statistic (or split it in two or three social classes and then get the average wages of those), get the average price of several different things and then calculate the individual purchasing powers either relative to all of these things respectively, which would give you the most insight and comparison. You could do this with an array of different countries and then compare the purchasing power relative to things like eggs or pots. Or you could calculate the total average purchasing power, which takes more time, but doesn't really say much about the everyday life of Singaporeans.
      You could also maybe to some thing in between, where, instead of looking at the purchasing power of individual things, you could summarise them under categories like "foodstuffs", "vehicles", "apartments" or "public transit", which I think would be the most suitable solution for comparison purposes.
      In any way, you would have to calculate and research a lot by yourself. No one can tell you that in a split second, especially not while being int interviewed on the streets.

      The "purchasing power of an average citizen" can be tricky to measure in SG.
      80% of Singaporeans live in HDB housing, which is effectively government subsidized and cheaper than commercial housing. It's mostly expats and high income earners who live in commercial housing (which is amongst the most expensive in the world).
      Cars are deliberately expensive in SG due to government taxes but the average person doesn't need a car since SG is compact and has excellent public transport which is cheap.
      Re food, at a normal food court SGD 5 can get you a good bowl of laksa, plus SGD 2 for an iced tea. That's pretty cheap. The SGD 8 latte mentioned in the video is probably from Starbucks, which is expensive everywhere. In contrast, alcohol is expensive due to taxes and rent; a cocktail at a nice bar would be around SGD 30. So it depends on where you choose to eat and drink.
      So the "cost of living" in SG depends on who you ask and what level of consumption they have. But overall, people don't starve or go homeless in SG.

      @@user-bs4qu7tb2g theoretically, purchasing power "is the value of a currency expressed in terms of the number of goods or services that one unit of money can buy". Purchasing power parity may be a better measure of affordability. Also it seems that some people are equating purchasing power with "disposable income". But either way, people certainly do sense their level of purchasing power when the value of their money rises or falls in terms of how much they can buy. And anyone who does budgeting will be able to gauge their disposable income too, regardless of whether they actually did the sums. Asking someone his or her ability to purchase based on his income level will still provide far richer answers than what we see here.

    It is getting more expensive here in Singapore for sure.
    Cab fares are easily $20-30 on average, food in restaurants that used to cost about $10-15 are now costing $20-30, even food courts meals require $7-10 esp if u incl. a drink, and yes coffee is at least $7-8 on average.
    Overall boils down to your lifestyle / spending habits, sure you can save by eating out less / traveling out less but if you want to live a ‘comfortable’ live here be prepared to pay inflated prices. And I’d say you’ll need at least $5-6k/ month to survive comfortably here as a single living with parents, but that amount would be difficult if u r looking to start a new family / already have kids etc.

      There's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, & not to be disrespected anymore by anyone.
      Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body. Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you without ranking/hierarchy. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have eternal life.
