Can't believe how few views this has - when was in my v early teens this show was touted as a female Young Ones by the press. Unfortunately as I recall this was on at like, 10pm on a Sunday which killed it instantly as far as 'the kids' were concerned as we were normally in bed worrying about GCSEs
This is definitely the female version of the young ones in every way exept for the jokes arn't funny the acting is terrible the script is awful the actors and characters are irritating and the fact that I'd rather donate my eyeballs to medical science than watch it. The beeb did us a favour putting it on so late and there's just a few things I liked about this monstrosity pretending to be entertainment.
@@itchycoo3847 If you recall The Young Ones the jokes were HORRIBLE, in fact they were intentionally horrible. It was a character comedy, and the acting was pretty much their stand up act, even to the point of constantly breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. Its the mark of a great show that you can break ALL the rules and still end up with something hilarious. This was 'designed' to be the same idea, but if you don't have the characters, you really don't have anything. They just figured 'well, lets have a bookish one, a gutsy one, an american one and thats all you need'. Sort of like how Seinfeld broke the rules and then every other show thought you could just add any kind of character and 'talk about nothing' and it would be hysterical. But its a perfect example of how british television suffers from the same problems as american TV. This really is cringeworthy while The Young Ones still is considered a classic.
Ha. Dawn French's character is so unpleasant and unlikable from the get-go. Saunders's character is ill thought-out. Ruby as an abrasive American is a gross caricature but at least she brings comic energy. Tracey Ullman is cute. The best is grand old Lady Whatsit the landlady. Very Norma Desmond. Nice to see Sandy from As time Goes by and the other lady from AbFab I recognize as secretaries at the beginning. British comedy back then seemed a small place where the same actors show up again and again in different roles, it's kind of nice.
OH MY GOD THAT'S ALAN RICKMAN
It really is!!!
“I shall count to three. There will not be a four”
