Hi! The Singer 404 takes your standard needle, you can use Schmetz or any other brand that is easy for you to find. I have used the universal ones in all the different sizes as well as the ball point ones for knits, the denim needle and the leather needle on the 404. All are fine. You do not need a specialty needle for this machine, isn’t that good news? Good luck with your new machine!
They all had the PA style motors, there were small differences like no grease port in the later ones and the Bakelite bottom was shaped a little differently. But other than that I think they are the same
I now am the new owner to a 404. I am struggling to get the upper/lower tension correct for quilt piecing. I think I get it correct but when i move the fabric out of the way to clip the threads, it’s hard to pull and can almost gather my stitches if I’m not careful. I also want to fmq on this machine and clearly am missing some key info as the bottom of the fabric is bird nesting. Any suggestions?
Hi! Do you know if it is the upper thread or the lower thread that is hard to pull when you are removing your work? Have you done any maintenance on the machine? This would help me answer your question, there are a number of areas to trouble shoot here…
