Backpacking from Akureyri to Skógar, passing through the Highlands, landmannalaugar, Laugavegur, Thorsmork, Fimmvorduhals and Skógafoss.
I also had the chance to see a volcano eruption in Iceland. A beautiful hike that got me to FAGRADALSFJALL / Meradalur volcano eruption in Iceland.

Quite an adventure, eh !! I was stationed in Keflavik in USN from late 1965 thru early 1968, my choice. In summer 66, hitched a ride from Reykjavik into the inland desert. Walked north across desert to a glacier with hot springs, did some climbing and hiked an old lava flow up a valley, then retraced and back out. 12 days. Memorable. You will remember this for a long time…

Lorsqu’on a le temps de regarder tes vidéos,c’est vraiment cool de regarder ça avec la musique en fond, le montage, les efforts, bref tout et continue comme ça c’est incroyable et baisse pas les bras tu y arriveras et même si l’algorithme fait mal les choses, un jour t’auras bien plus d’abonnés que ça, lâche rien !

Impressionnant! Toute une aventure, tout un accomplissement. Tu es très résilient avec toutes les épreuves que tu as du affronter, température, vent, blessure, etc. J’aimerais bien un jour aller à cet endroit, je vais me limiter à quelques randonnées par contre mais je sens que je vais les apprécier.
Wow, le volcan, tout une expérience. Être là au bon endroit au bon moment. 👍🏻

I think that I've learned alot on that one. Thank you for noticing it. Even if I have some problem (bad focus with the new camera ahah). I'm really satisfied with the final product and I think it show well the mental wall like you said.

Quand on voit par moment comment tu boîtes, cela n'a pas dû être facile tous les jours. Avec les traversées de rivières, tes pieds devaient être tout blanc et la peau ramollie . . . .

Effectivement la blessure a été dur sur le moral et l'énergie.
Pour les rivières ce n'est pas si pire, je ne reste pas assez longtemps dans l'eau. Surtout qu'elle est complètement glacé.
Effectivement le volcan était une chance. Il a été actif 3 semaines et j'ai pu en profiter

Excellent Alex! Bravo pour cet exploit, la beauté des paysages, la résilience de marcher avec cette cheville et en isolation. Encore une fois une job d'édition vidéo impressionnante avec du matériel visuel qui on se doute a coûté des dizaines de kilomètres en extra au compteur! Merci!

Très émouvant pour moi qui y suis allé 3 fois et fait une randonnée nord sud avec les Karavaniers (pas aussi difficile et surtout pas seul!) Ça m’a permis de revivre beaucoup d’émotions. C’est ça l’Islande. C’est ça le vent, la pluie, la lumière, la beauté incommensurable. Merci tellement et bravo!

Wow. Félicitations, superbe film, tout un accomplissement. J’ai rit quand le/la park ranger a dit que personne ou presque avait réussi cette traversée; évidement c’était pas ça qui allait t’arrêter.
Merci 🙂. Je ne parlais pas de la traversée nord sud, je parlais d'une certaine rivière en particulier qui était sur mon plan initial à traverser, mais qui n'est pas possible en fin de compte, donc j'ai du changer de plan 🙂

Well done Alex! Incredible journey and achievement. When you descended from mount Sulur at 6:42, did you find a trail or road into the little town? Or did you have to walk through farm fences? I’m thinking of taking a similar route next year and would love to know more about that descent and the path to Hrafnagil, thanks!

Bravo Alex ! I really enjoyed watching that (I'll go and watch your second video now). Though the first half of the hike looked very tough going and there's no way I could get close to the daily kms you were hiking !!
As a photographer during the six weeks I'll be in Iceland I'll be making numerous short (2-3 nights) trips into the Highlands and I think it will suit me better (more photogenic) than a North to South route. So a couple of questions if I may?
What was your starting pack weight (without food & water)? I'm trying to decide on whether to take my heavier pack (2.9 kgs) or use the GG Mariposa (1 kg).
What painkillers did you use? I'll need them for sure! They seemed to work well for you 😄
I didn't notice what boots you used? I am trying to decide between trail runners (e.g. Hoka One One and my usual (much heavier) hiking boots (Lowa Renegades).

So to answer you question.
I don't really know my base weight.
I know that the first day with 14 days of food and water, I was a about 40 pounds. The think that also had a lot of weight was the battery for the camera, there was no place to charge the camera during the trip, so I add alot of weight with that.
For pain killer, I don't know where you from, but for me in Canada, its call Advil.
For shoes, I have altra show (trail runners). Thats what suit me, but on that I would say go with what you feel the best in it .

I realy appreciated your Video. It reminded me on my several hikes in the Icelandic Highlands in the last 30+ years. And I also made several Solo traverses like you did. So please allow me one serious personal question:
Why the hell were you speeding that much. A Distance like that in just 10 days is of course possible ( you made the proof of it), but I could not realy see any reason for it, especially if you are handycaped in your walking ( what I could see clearly on your video with your left foot ) and need to take even painkillers all the way long. Slow down by 50% and have a restday every 5-6 days, just to enjoy the landscape or to have a long sleeping night. That would make much more sense to me. Also why are you walking at night, taking a much higher risk to make a false step and hurting yourself even more. Also in the darkness of the night you couldn`t enjoy the beautiful landscape, because everything is not that much colourfull.

Hi, thank you 😁. yes Iceland it's beautiful, and I agree that going to the speed I was going, I did probably miss some.
First reason to your question, It's that I had a flight to take after my hike. I only had 2 weeks off for that trip. So not much time to do it slow.
Second thing, I was actually not walking that fast, just bigger day than most hiker. So I had enough time to see everything. That's the pleasure of walking in Iceland during summer, not much dark.
Except when you go to the south. I did push that one a little bit. Like I said, flight to take. And there was to much people for me in Landmannalaugar, so that's why I push that part during the night. I really enjoyed doing that.
Like a like to say, hiking it's not always about landscape, yes it's fun and it's beautiful. But at that moment I was more for a physical and mental challenge.

Je ne sais aucunement le nombre de km additional ahah. Ma montre était en mode expédition, donc elle mettait un point à chaque heure, donc j'ai du retracée chez moi pour savoir combien de km de sentier. Ce qui me dit aucunement avec mes aller retour. Je dirais que c'est sûr que je suis en haut de 400km .😅

Hey, to be honest, I had my food for the full trip in my backpack, so I have 14 days of food with me, did the traverse in 10.
One of the only way I saw, it was renting a car and going to the shelter drop some food.
In the shelter, there's food you can purchase (chip, cookie, etc). For the laugavegur part, there's food in every campground. So for that part it's easy.

Hmm ok! Found some info about sending packages but its all pretty unclear 😅 we'll see how I end up doing. I really would prefer not having to carry it all the whole way but, maybe that's the only option!

Hi, I have been contemplating this hike myself. Can you say how you chose this route, and how you resupplied / sent packages along the way?
For the route I draw it myself,from there I contact ranger in Icelandic park to ask if everything was possible. After that , on the trail, I had to change a little bit of thing directly on the spot.
For resupply, I had in my backpack 14 days of food (most of the weight of my backpack 😅). At the end it took me 10 days. Feel free to ask me anything

Ah d'accord je comprends, c'est la difficultés des réseaux sociaux, malheureusement si il ne rentre pas dans les critères de l'algorithme (qui priorise beaucoup les vidéos très court), ça fait que moins de gens le voit. Le secret ensuite est que les gens qui le voit le partage pour aider Ahah.
