Every expression, look of despondency, determination then downfall - THAT was Katniss. The last thing I was invested in was her weight and if it was accurate to the books. She embodies the spirit of the character, just like Samuel L. Jackson embodies Nick Fury.
If I remember right, it made sense to the book anyway... Because the whole reason the Katniss could shoot was because she was poaching, so her family actually did have some food.
I did think about it because it was so against the norm that it stuck out. It’s usually a size 0 actress that weighs 98 pounds and she was a normal weight
The fact that I never thought about it until recently when the subject was talked about. It NEVER crossed my mind that JLaw could be overweight for this movie, even if the title was The Hunger Games. She was just a GREAT Katniss! Perfect the way she was (still is). I am so glad she didnt go on a diet for it !!!
I would have agreed for very very many other movies. But not hunger games. I understand Jennifer Lawrence point, but the main character of hunger games is a girl who never really had enough to eat her intire life. And it's not fair to leave them unseen und not represented just for 'bod positivity' because it's not about beauty standarts, because they were supposed to not look good because they are unhealthy thin. All of the kids in district twelve and many in the games looked much to healthy. Eventhough I wouldn't expect any actor to starve themselves until they look unhealthy/starving. But couldn't they have done that with CGI? An other point is, that being very light was an advantage of Katniss because it saved her life to be able to climb trees mich higher than others. Actually Jennifer Lawrence was also too tall to play Katniss, but they couldn't change that without changing the actor, so it's okay. And one more time, so that no one misunderstands me: Jennifer Lawrence is beautiful and does not at all have to be skinnier. Only Katniss would have to be. her being regular sized literally promoted so much peace for me as a teenager. so grateful to see a normal body weight in those years, it was like a revelation that my body was maybe not the worst
I’ve always been small, my whole life I’ve been short and fairly slender. but like as a teenager who felt very awkward in her body, Jennifer Lawrence always made me feel okay bc she always was herself and stayed true to who she was. She hasn’t nor does she want to compromise her body for the sake of her love for acting.
ps upon just now rewatching, holy shit. she was, in reality, so thin. i can’t believe it felt revolutionary to see that on the big screen. i’m so proud of how far we’ve come
In the books, Katniss' hunting creates such a surplus of food for the Everdeen family that she trades food away for other goods. Katniss is also described in the books as being athletic rather than skinny. There was nothing wrong with Jennifer Lawrence's physical shape.
I remember the narrative of her being too big but to my understanding, it wasn’t about weight. It was about her height. If I remember correctly, Katniss was described as very petite. She was supposed to be very short (I think like 5’2) and small and was supposed to be olive skinned with dark hair and gray eyes. Nonetheless I think Jen did a great job and I was overall happy with the movies. Would love for them to be remade as a tv show though so they can go more in depth and maybe have more accurate portrayals of the characters.
Yeah! I even remember this part of the book where she looks at the other contestants and realizes she looks so much healthier than them because of her hunting and gathering. Everyone else truly looks emaciated (except for the tributes from the well-off districts) while she looked strong.
How long has it been since you read the book? Her trading was not due to surplus, it was due to needing other things. The few times she could trade "a surplus" do not add up to her being over underweight
I remember when she came out against the body shaming culture of Hollywood, and everyone was like, "She''s kind of a stick-thin model type though." I had no idea until recently that she faced so much scrutiny over not being thin enough for Katniss. She's not even fat. It's pretty ridiculous!
It was never about her being fat. People were upset when she was cast because she didn't look like the character at all. The character is supposed to be worryingly thin due to poverty, have olive skin, and dark features
I remember thinking she was quite curvaceous and not skinny like the actresses that were trendy and that were everywhere She was quite curvy and sexy for a teenager! I was a lot skinnier and my look was less curvy and more stereotypically early ‘2000 and for me she looked really womanly
and like, “oh you should go on a diet” BRO IF YOU THINK KATNISS LOOKED LIKE A STARVING CHILD, DO U REALLY THINK THAT THIS ACTOR SHOULD BE FORCED TO BECOME A STARVING CHILD?
Her issue was that young girls, especially teenage girls who already have body image issues, wouldn't look at Katniss and think "she's so thin from starving," but would instead see it as a goal to attain to look attractive. She was taking into consideration the physical and mental health of the young people who would look up to her portrayal of Katniss. Why is that so difficult for people to understand?
It's perfectly understandable, but it does take a bit from the image of oppressed state where people are starving. IMHO, they could've tried to make her look skinnier and exhausted with some makeup during the beginning of the movie and gradually get rid of it during her time in training, where they had all the food they needed etc. It wouldn't affect her image in 80% of the movie, but kept the setup more visually believable in first 10-20mins of it.
re: several comments, her character was not supposed to be starving because she specifically was illegally hunting to provide for her family Edit: Since y'all are clearly misremembering... YES the book describes her as very thin, but only after losing a lot of weight in the arena and in flashbacks to when she was starving after her father's death. In her day-to-day life in 12 and when we meet her at the beginning of the book, she is not actively starving to death and specifically refers to starving in the past tense. This period of time is before she started taking after her father and hunting and gathering! You could've cast a very thin person in the role, but it wouldn't be accurate to the start of the book. You could cast a still very lean but less thin actor like JLaw, but that's not accurate to the book post-arena. It doesn't really matter.
There was a point she was so starved peeta burnt bread for her. I knew the context when i watched the film but my dad was like is she hung over? I thought she was still starving but onyl surviving die to hunting as shes hunting for her whole family. Not hate to her though
Is everyone being intentionally dense? She’s clearly talking about strong female action hero in kids and YA stories. That’s why she feels like it was trailblazing for the time and a lot of responsibility especially at such a big scale?
The Golden Compass. 15yrs before Hunger Games. Based on a YOUNG ADULT novel, the FEMALE protagonist sets out to SAVE THE WORLD. The FEMALE LEAD is played by an 11yr OLD ACTRESS. Nim's Island. 14yrs before Hunger Games. An adventure story about a YOUNG FEMALE PROTAGONIST, whose life is an adventure for this courageous 11yr old girl. Alice in Wonderland 12yrs before Hunger Games. @@joshuah9109 how are you counting these years… because the first hunger games film came out in 2012 and the alice in wonderland remake was only 2 years before that in 2010. I agree that katniss wasn’t the FIRST female lead but she is still a very strong female character and you’re using incorrect information to try and discredit that?
@@joshuah9109 First off, my comment was in reference to people bringing up alien, lara Croft etc and saying that Laurence was trying to say she was the first female lead in a film or female action hero or whatever. That was why I frustratedly made the distinction. To comment on your point: Yes, there were other kids/ya movies with female leads. However, I don’t think any of the characters you mentioned qualify as action heroes. They are young girls who are part of an adventure, they may encounter conflict but they are not fighting often as part of their character. Katniss is in combat a lot, often hand to hand and actually trained with a weapon. There is a big difference between that and the movies mentioned, even if Alice has a random fight at the climax of the movie (which doesn’t fit her character since she’s not an action hero and doesn’t happen in the book). As for the others, those girls weren’t actually in combat and if they were, they were NOT fighting themselves i.e. people/animals fighting on their behalf, or on sidelines. The conflict was going on around them. Like if Rue from Hunger Games was the main lead, I wouldn’t say she was like an action hero/fighter type because she avoids conflict and uses her wits not to get involved because she’s a small girl. She’s more similar to the types you’ve mentioned. Can you not see how what I’m talking about is different? Having a strong female Main character who’s like a soldier, trained with a weapon and fights throughout the films marketed to kids/teens, I hadn’t seen that before?
It’s ridiculous that of all the comments Jen made during this interview people only focus on the action hero one. Can we never focus on the positives? As someone who suffered with an ED growing up, I really appreciate people like Jen who refused to bow to the pressure to crash diet for a movie part.

i remember her being cast, and my teenage self thinking about how i finally had someone to look up to. she was my weight and it felt like the metaphorical weight was lifted from my shoulders - i was horrifically anorexic but you'd never have been able to tell. now, im 28, i haven't felt bad about my body in years. i rewatched the hunger games a while back, and im a bit 'bigger' than her now. she was SO incredibly skinny in the hunger games, but the brief respite of being bombarded with diet culture, and heroin chic, and thinspo tumblr blogs gave me the nudge towards reality that i still uphold today.
In the text Katniss discusses this when she looks at the non-career tributes. She says that they look unhealthily drawn, thin, and undernourished. She said, while she was thin, she had muscle, because the food and exercise from her hunting gave her a healthier body then them. So at that point, she wouldn't have been starving thin...
I was a die hard book fan. Begging friends to read the book long before the movie was announced. The idea that she needed to look literally emanciated to play Katniss was disgusting. There are serious health risks involved with dieting like that. Why did we expect an actor to do that to themselves? Would we expect everyone else who played someone in the lower districts to do the same?
I really hope Jen will never change into something that she doesn't believe. It's getting so rare these days to see a movie star being who they are. She is beautiful, sweet and funny💝
She got a lot of hate for her “puffy face”(she was a freaking teen with baby fat that time) and people used to say her arms were very big and all. She got a lot of scrutiny for the way she looked in the first two movies especially ☹️
This absolute insanity that her weight was an issue or a talking point. She is just super super normal. Absolute madness and upsetting to see her even having the need to explain it or talk about it.

The worst part is that she wasn’t even close to being fat or what people called “chubby”. I remember this being a subject of debate. Katniss was described as being petite and thin, but it’s really not that much of an important detail when translating onto the big screen.
Bearing in mind, Katniss as a character in the books would've been pretty underweight. Would you want an actor to be basically starving themselves while performing all these stunts, just for accuracy?

“It’s not accurate”. No one should have to starve themselves literally for a role. Listen to yourselves. You’re passively wanting another human being to STARVE themselves. The movies were amazing and yes it’s called the “hunger games” but I never once thought “she’s too big for this role.” She was just fine without a stupid diet!!!
people think she is bigger than she is because the camera adds 50lbs to people with her proportions. I looked up her measurements once and I was shocked to realize they were identical to mine. People who keep saying Katniss did not starve did not read the book, her family and her were still definitely underneath and malnourished they were just better off than most people in her district. @@sarahwales6276 do you not know what adolescence is?
Gosh no, I've never heard of the word.
That's when you realize she was perfectly cast for the role because she was strong enough to say no ! Just like Katniss.
Just like Britney Spears said: "She's too big now she's too thin!"
I remember thinking she was quite curvaceous and not skinny like the actresses that were trendy and that were everywhere
She was quite curvy and sexy for a teenager! I was a lot skinnier and my look was less curvy and more stereotypically early ‘2000 and for me she looked really womanly
@@propogandalfShe does have olive skin and dark features?! And who cares!
and like, “oh you should go on a diet” BRO IF YOU THINK KATNISS LOOKED LIKE A STARVING CHILD, DO U REALLY THINK THAT THIS ACTOR SHOULD BE FORCED TO BECOME A STARVING CHILD?
@@vasiliipopov416 why would she be skinny, she excel at hunting and gathering, trading food for her family

its awesome that she had the thought to protect young fans while she was so young herself. what a cool girl ❤
re: several comments, her character was not supposed to be starving because she specifically was illegally hunting to provide for her family
Edit: Since y'all are clearly misremembering...

@@joshuah9109 but she never said anything like this is the first female lead in the video how does that relate to any of this
@@joshuah9109 how are you counting these years… because the first hunger games film came out in 2012 and the alice in wonderland remake was only 2 years before that in 2010.
Hannah came out a year before Hunger Games it also had a female lead that used a bow and arrow. In my opinion it's a better movie.
It’s ridiculous that of all the comments Jen made during this interview people only focus on the action hero one. Can we never focus on the positives? As someone who suffered with an ED growing up, I really appreciate people like Jen who refused to bow to the pressure to crash diet for a movie part.

Never have it crossed my mind for a sec that she should have been more "starved" for Hunger Games. Good choice!
She grasped at that term so quickly and equated it to the title even quicker
i remember her being cast, and my teenage self thinking about how i finally had someone to look up to. she was my weight and it felt like the metaphorical weight was lifted from my shoulders - i was horrifically anorexic but you'd never have been able to tell.
now, im 28, i haven't felt bad about my body in years. i rewatched the hunger games a while back, and im a bit 'bigger' than her now. she was SO incredibly skinny in the hunger games, but the brief respite of being bombarded with diet culture, and heroin chic, and thinspo tumblr blogs gave me the nudge towards reality that i still uphold today.
MASSIVE respect for her - katniss was fit but not stick thin. She was STRONG
Yes!!!!!
I totally agree, they could have done it with CGI though.
Jennifer KILLED it!

That would be so dumb, lol. Not once did I think about her weight! If someone wanted to stay true to the book, why not use CGI for everyone, but still - I don’t think that would’ve been wise, because kids were watching it.
I would have agreed for very very many other movies. But not hunger games. I understand Jennifer Lawrence point, but the main character of hunger games is a girl who never really had enough to eat her intire life.
And there are many kids in the world that don't have enough to eat and now a main character is supposed to present them.
Because they never get presented anywhere. I've nwver seen a movie about starving girls.
And it's not fair to leave them unseen und not represented because it's not about beauty standarts, because they were supposed to not look good because they are unhealthy thin.
All of the kids in district twelve and many in the games looked much to healthy.
Eventhough I wouldn't expect any actor to starve themselves until they look unhealthy/starving.
But couldn't they have done that with CGI?
An other point is, that being very light was an advantage of Katniss because it saved her life to be able to climb trees much higher than others.
Actually Jennifer Lawrence was also too tall to play Katniss, but they couldn't change that without changing the actor, so it's okay.

I'm someone who has trouble staying at a healthy weight and people often comment how thin I am and ask me if I'm eating enough. So if a star looks thin on camera, just know they are SKRAWNY in real life.
