  • This past summer, apprentices with the New England Carpenters Training Fund (NECTF) completed work on a unique project on Peddocks Island, one of the most historic and diverse of the 34 islands in Boston Harbor. Over one hundred apprentices traveled to the island over the course of a year for onsite, hands-on training to restore the Peddocks Island Chapel.
The scope of work needing to be done at the chapel was daunting, and the Boston Harbor Island Alliance reached out to the New England Regional Council of Carpenters and the NECTF asking for help with labor on the $1.8 million chapel renovation project.
The island experience offered a unique work opportunity for the carpenters apprentices. While being taught general work conditions and site safety, apprentices also learned the logistics of planning to work in an isolated environment and how to adapt and adjust accordingly.
Peddocks is open to the public and accessible by private boat or by ferry.

I was part of troop 121 from Weymouth that painted the Chapel in 83 or 84 for George Hickey's Eagle Scout project. I'm glad to see it redone properly, we could only putty the windows and paint. We also picked up tons of shingles. Sad to see the number of buildings that were torn down, they were so spooky and cool without windows or much in the way of sounds. Big thanks to the Union, nice job!
