  • The Nikon ZF is a camera that will be with me for many, many years. It is the best Nikon I’ve owned since the Nikon F3 HP and I love that it’s so enjoyable to use.

    Before purchasing, I was also not excited by the flip out screen. But now that I've had the camera for a few months, I actually like the fact that I can fold the screen completely away. Because I am a viewfinder photographer after all. And perhaps even more importantly, if the camera is hanging around me, the screen does not constantly bump / rub against my body.

      I do love the foldaway screen as well. So I’ll stay with you on that.

    The Zf isn't only just fun, beneath the retro beauty of the switches and dials it's also an incredibly capable tool, with some unique features.

    I’m a Canon shooter (pro work) since the mid-nineties, and the Z f made me interested in Nikon. Got mine a couple of weeks ago, so happy! This camera is fun.

      @@samarianosans I do mostly corporate events / interior, use the R5 and L lenses with the grip permanently attached, and this kit is just too big & heavy in many cases. I also tried Fuji, they are nice, no hate whatsoever, still use them for their “artsy” JPEGs, but full-frame is just in a different league. The Z f is also completely different than the R5. It inspires me. I can grab it whenever I need to. And it has the power & tech of some high-end Nikon bodies. I would highly recommend to try before you buy, as the Z f seems to be either hated or loved, but nothing in between.
      Enjoy your photography journey.

    I picked up the Zf last fall, kind of a FOMO purchase and figured I'd send it back. Needed a secondary / backup body. Well 4 months later, it hasn't left my side. Absolutely love using it, love the results, it's an easy daily carry too. Especially with the 26 2.8 pancake (metal mount! 🙂)
    Agree about the flip screen, but I'm also learning to appreciate its benefits. It's great to use for low verticals, but not so much for horizontals, being off-axis. I do like closing it inward, for screen protection but also it enhances the old-school vibe. Still, nothing beats my Z8's 4-way tilt screen.
    Needs the new Cycle AF Mode setting (Z8, 9) especially with the single Fn button up front. Easy fw addition. I really wish it had IBIS lock - I don't love that the mechanism is just kind of floating around when the power is off. But man what a fantastic addition to the Z lineup.

    I really like the Zf and this just may be my first Nikon ever. I still can't believe the choice to match such a well made camera body with plastic lenses. The lenses "look" fantastic while matching the body, and seem to have decent performance. However, the lenses really should have been all metal, keeping with the design aesthetic even if costing a bit more. The camera has some weight so a few more grams isn't a big deal.

    • @kaskoPhoto

    I love your enthusiasm shining through like a ray of summer sunshine. I moved from Fuji to Nikon Z7 because my hands were too big to hold & fiddle with the X-T3. Nikon 40mpx cameras like the Z7, at the press of a button can also shoot in APS-C mode so every lens can be shot at two focal lengths! I.e. my 26mm f2.8 becomes nearly 40mm at about 20mpx. Great for general use and lens cost effective too. If Nikon ever bring out a Zf with 40mpx I’ll be there in a shot. Thanks for the handheld Godox V350 flash tip. I’m very interested to buy one with the Godox X3 N transmitter. I hope you enjoy a cold beer with my $6!! Oops! You forgot the link. Let me know if you add it on please. Greetings from London.

      @kaskoPhoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      20mp is enough for most jobs I do so the aps-c mode is an added benefit. I’m really happy with this being 24, it really is enough for my regular jobs (outside of some commercial work).

    I love the camera! I am less convinced by the 40mm f2 SE. It is pretty soft and only really starts to improve around f5.6. Now there are situations, when this dreamy look is wanted, otherwise it is not the allrounder I hoped for. Having said this I need to try it in more light and environmental situations. It might give a different touch to certain portraits and street photos.
    The Zf is magnificent and with M adaptor huge fun to use!!!
    It is the kind of AF Leica I was looking for.
    One word of warning to all the super croppers and pixel peeper out there. This camera takes amazing, beautiful rendering photos but if you want to crop the hack out of it it looses hands down to the 50-60 mp sensors. On the other hand the Zf delivers in low light.
    Thinking about to add the 85 1.8S, as a second AF lens.

    My only real complaint of the ZF is the "grip". It's a quite heavy camera and even with the Smallrig grip I find it unstable. If they had put a contour in the back of the camera to enhance the thumb "grip", I think it would be okay. In the end, I returned mine and will wait to see what the Z6 iii offers.

    Budget minded.. I put the Fujifilm grip on my little X-T20 and it’s my perfect daily camera.

    John - this was the heartbreak for me with this camera - the wretched screen. I'm a pro who uses two Z6ii's that I adore. I shoot fast moving events, dancing and I'm the pro shooter here in Western Australia for all of their Dragon Boat Races. My 6ii's are mostly always fine, but I'd really love the improved AFC. The camera looks gorgeous, the new sensor improved AF all that stuff - why the hang did they put that horrible screen on there. I do zero video and shoot 85% of all my shoots from the hip - that screen would kill me. I'm hangin for the Z6iii, but have a terrible gut feeling they are also putting that blasted thing on there too.

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I completely understand your point of view on this. Especially for what you shoot and how you shoot it. Can you get use to looking down at a screen on the side? Yes. But it wouldn’t make it better and would drive you crazy. Hopefully the next Z6 will have you covered.

  • @drwatsonismine
    @drwatsonismine Před 4 měsíci

    How do you have it set up? Menus, buttons, dials, etc. I have only used the very simplest leica and hasselblad menus/cameras. It seems overwhelming. Maybe a brief video on it? Thanks so much. I’m still on the fence about it, and also wanted a higher MP . Thanks so much for the video.

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Před 4 měsíci

      To be honest everything is as it was out of the box. I just set it in manual mode and put on eye detect and that’s it. I didn’t dig into the menus too much - other than the flash modes so I knew how to change them and the metering modes.

    I love my Zf and if you want an amazing mf lens in native Z mount, get the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 It's worlds better than the plastic 40mm Nikkor as it's built like the old Nikkor lenses of the '60s and 70s.
    I have a question for you about your Good tt350 on the Zf. I have the same combo but it seems that in ttl mode the 350 doesn't always play nicely with the Zf. Sometimes even with flash comp at plus 1, iso 400, f 2.8 and my subject at 10ish feet the results are still a bit dark? If i use my xpro trigger with my tt350 I don't seem to have that issue. When I throw it in manual mode I have no issues getting that little flash to throw off some light. I never experienced those issues with my tt685 or my ad-200 when paired with my D850. Perhaps I have a defective tt350?

    • @kaskoPhoto
      @kaskoPhoto  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Well it does have to be updated to firmware 1.1 (which I can’t do on my copy) and most Godox flashes just aren’t that great in TTL anyway. The best for me are native Nikon flashes or the Profoto A10
