Queen's Guard Marching From Buckingham Palace

  • The Queen's Guard marches from Buckingham Palace after a rehearsal for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on June 2, 2012. The Queens Guard (also known informally/incorrectly as Buckingham Guards) marched out of Buckingham Palace, down Birdcage Walk and into Wellington Barracks in preparation for Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee Weekend.
    NOTE: I'm told the Queen's Guard is actually returning from a rehearsal for Trooping the Colour in this video. Trooping the Colour has taken place annually for almost 300 years.

      i'd say the guardsmen are the professionals of drill since if they mess up they have to deal with the embarrassment to publicly making fools of themselves and then get an earful from the drill sergeants and then probably taken off guardsmen if it was extremely severe

    It's an imposing sight isn't it ... ? The Guards, in their pomp, must have been an intimidating spectacle in the days when the red coats were worn into battle.
    When Napoleon's thitherto unbeaten Old Guard advanced up the middle toward the end of the Battle of Waterloo, as the Emperor's last desperate throw of the dice, it was the Guards who stopped them in their tracks, before allied & other British units helped turn them back.
    "Up Guards, and at 'em!", indeed. And La Garde retreated ...

      20years ago a good friend of mine commanded a British Army detachment on a friendly visit to Washington DC. In full ceremonial uniform they marched up Pennsylvania Avenue through the traffic with swords drawn to the gates of the White House and demanded entry. Security staff ,after shitting themselves, allowed them in to the rose garden as long as they left the swords at the guard house ,"they might be dangerous". It may have been more dangerous if they had let on that their forebears were the Shropshire Militia who burnt the place in1812!

      Blakey on each toe point, horseshoe on each heel and 13 hobnails on each sole. Crunch crunch. All the difference when you are marching. Each ankle boot is triple leather-soled. The video shows members of the Foot Guard Regiments returning from a rehearsal for the annual Trooping the Colour (Queen's Birthday Parade) which took place on June 16, 2012. The term Queen's Guard refers to those troops who are guarding the London royal residences on any particular date. The Queen's Life Guard refers to members of the Household Cavalry performing the similar duty.

    • @vostokcosomonaut5205
      @vostokcosomonaut5205 Před 3 lety +2

      In the guards they have two ranks which differ from the regular army in that they have an extra chevron (Lance Corporal - two white chevrons, Lance Sergeant ((Corporal)) - three white chevrons) and so to denote the difference between them and Sergeants they wear white chevrons and sergeants wear gold.

      'By the right number 4 guard, step out Captain please' - is what I heard, I definitely heard a please, and he wouldn't say please to an ordinary Guardsman so it'd have to be an Officer, so that's my educated guess.

      The pace stick? I don't know much about military ranks, but I believe they are Sergeant Majors. Their pace stick can split to make a sort of compass (drawing tool not the navigation too). They walk with it between guards to measure their distance. From what I've seen, they also yell at soldiers to straighten up, insure that soldiers are marching in unison (left right left kind of thing), change arms, and deploy the ensign escorts. During the annual trooping the colour ceremony they hand over the colours to the ensign. Old/retired Sergeant Majors can become Yeoman Warders/Beefeaters.
