Jalen Hurts Faces Media Doubts on Quick Spread Offense

  • In today's video, I discuss the recent media attention around Kellen Moore's scheme through OTAs. It involves a lot of quick passing concepts, and the question has been raised about if it's the right fit for Jalen Hurts. Some have expanded the conversion to include, is this scheme the right fit for our skill position players too. In my opinion, it is. We've been entirely too vertical, and we need a coordinator to make sure we're taking what defenses are giving us. Adapt or fail in the NFL.

    So glad this is the topic… Jalens timing is bad on throw that are not 25 yds or better… he has to recognize the open area quicker on normal passes

      I think that was a product of less hot reads and RB routes out if the backfield…if they aren’t running those or practicing those it makes it tough…low sample size on those…and NS emphasizes creating plays above 20+ yards…

    The QB I believe balanced the combination of timing throws in the pocket and utilizing their scrabbling ability was Steve Young. Donovan McNabb also did a great job of combining those attributes as well.

      What’s up MistaSandMan! That’s a pretty good read into the QBs, and the systems they played in. The funny thing is, the QB that Jalen Hurts reminds me the most of, I rarely hear him discussed, Steve McNair. I think there is a little bit of McNabb and Steve McNair to his game.

      I appreciate it, and part of the reason we’re hearing cowboys fans say this is because they know they’re in trouble if Kellen makes a seriously deep playoff run with Jalen. Especially if the offense is clicking in those games. They know it would end the entire Kellen Moore was the problem debate, and they would have to change course on the defensive superiority argument they keep presenting. Something would have to give, and they will likely ignore the most obvious answer.

    Off topic: I'm getting the impression that Sirianni was the issue in the collapse.
    This summer Gainwell said during a podcast that it was the culture. Yesterday BG said the collapse was bc of coaches/coaching. Smitty said under Kellen they're able to do things that they weren't "ALLOWED" to do b4. Hurts silence when asked about Sirianni's acceptance of Kellen running the offense...
    All signs point to Sirianni just being in the building for nothing. He's supposed to be the "culture guy" but if he couldn't resolve the collapse and has been holding the players/offense back, why's he here??

    I don't have even 10% of your football knowledge, coach. But it worries me a bit if Hurts can't run this kind of offense because there's no long term future in the NFL by running designed run plays with your QB. Hurts has to become more of a passer and rely less on RPOs and the threat of him running the ball to open the defense.

I hope I'm wrong I really go I hope I eat all my words I really do. They are going to line him up over center He's not going to do well. • @mikeronald3812

    I think they're trying to get Hurts to stop panicking in the pocket and release the ball on time. I don't think motion will be a good idea. I think it will confuse Hurts more than the Defense.

    • @CoachHeitter
      @CoachHeitter  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Every QB is different when it comes to things such as the application of motion, or being under center vs shotgun. The tried and true example being that early on during Tom Brady's career, he liked to be under center. However, Peyton Manning hated being put under center, and he wanted to be in shotgun. So, every QB has the little things about them.
      Now, when it comes to motion, I can't say for 100%, but I do think that is more of a Nick Sirianni thing than a Jalen Hurts thing. We will know soon enough.

    This conversation is super weird. The Eagles didn't have an offensive system last year. Yes Jalen took a lot of time to throw, but that wasn't because he didn't know who to throw to. That's because Sirianni basically had everybody running God damn go routes every play. Getting the ball out quickly was Not how the eagles offense was designed to operate. I think it is asinine to think that the problem was ever Jalen.
    Everyone who played the eagles said the offense was a high school offense. That is on the coaches. When he had an actual offense, with Shane, he was excellent.

  • @catmando1968stevie
    @catmando1968stevie Před 3 měsíci

    It is going to be interesting because the way I believe is either jalen's going to be really good at it or just the opposite. If you watched his eyes last year jalen's eyes were always downfield first. He always goes down with your first then he'll look at his second option closer. Now what you're asking him to do is look at the short game first and then downfield You know I'm right Steve. 2.5 seconds is a joke when it comes to Jalen and he doesn't have it. He's going to have to change Jalen first get him to stop looking down field. This is making me feel worse than before it really is because you're asking somebody to do something once again he doesn't know how to do.

    The whole 2.3 seconds jargon nonsense shouldn’t have even been something to come out of these coaches mouths to the public…it s clearly not real in practice and application

    • @CoachHeitter
      @CoachHeitter  Před 3 měsíci

      It's real in it's practice and application, but the media really misunderstood what coach Nuss was saying. They're treating it as if the vast majority of throws in this scheme are going to be under 2.3/seconds. No way on that one. However, Dak did have a game vs the Giants in 2019 where his time to throw mark was 2.25/seconds. Then, he had a game in 2021 against the Chargers where his time to throw was 2.25/seconds as well. So, in total under Kellen Moore, Dak had 10 games where his time to throw was 2.5/seconds or less. Not all members of the media, but a few seemed to forget that time to throw marks are built off of averages. So, you need to know the total of throws in a game, season, career at a certain time mark. Most analytics comapnies track at 2.6/seconds, above and below.
      Coach Nuss was saying that most progressions by a QB are completed within 2.3 seconds. However, things will happen on occassion such as a LB falling into a window, and a QB having to hold the ball for an extra few tenths of seconds to allow the WR, TE, or RB to clear that window. The whole best laid plans get spoiled or ruined sometimes.
      He also referenced simulated pressure. That's what he meant in the interview when he said dropping 8 into coverage on 3rd down. You similate a 6-7 man pressure, but at the snap, you drop 8. That's what the Vikings did to us last year. If you're caught passing on that look, it's tough but not impossible to find a throwing window within 2.3 seconds.
      So, the staff definitely wants to have built progressions that are fast, and we will see a lot more throws within the 1-10 yard radius, for sure. However, the media misunderstood that anything under 2.5 seconds is incredibly fast. Last season, according to Next Gen Stats, only 5 QBs had time to throw marks under 2.6 seconds. #1 Tua (2.36), #2 Mac (2.46), #3 Trevor Lawrence (2.51), #4 Trevor Siemian (2.53), and #5 Joe Burrow (2.54).
      They're just making a little too much out of this.
