I was Colt's LT at Saddleback where I eventually earned a scholarship to Syracuse. I can attest to the comment made that Greg Robinson (RIP) called him to inform him the president of Syracuse at the time Nancy Cantor took away his scholarship due to his troubles at Colorado. Colt was an amazing teammate at Saddleback and had a HUGE heart on the field and off. He is missed and will continued to be missed - RIP Colt.

Colt was a solid dude. Positive energy, always smiling and a great leader. always looked out for his guys. We played ball together at Mater Dei. (Almost transferred to Hawaii to ball with him again but an ACL injury halted those plans unfortunately) Bro had a cannon though, craziest release…he could whip that rock across the field. I was so proud of him during his reign at UH and his opportunity in the NFL. Unfortunately that accident was the catalyst to his health deteriorating, I don’t think ppl understand it was more than just CTE…it was so traumatic it resulted in severe nerve damage to his limbs. He dealt with spasticity, sometimes having muscle shakes or tremors and not being able to control it. It was so severe by the time I saw him in 2017, that the nerve endings in his feet were dying and he was walking around with a cane. Even from our conversations I recognized his cognitive health had diminished greatly. I remember wanting to break down in tears when I saw him in that state, my heart hurt so much to see my friend like that. I tried continuing to check on him periodically but after about a yr or so I stopped getting responses. Then fast forward 2-3yrs and I get the news from one of our close friends about his passing. It’s heartbreaking, I love the guy and miss him dearly, and think about him often. I wish stories like this wasn’t how he was remembered.
Also his rise at UH was insane, the state of Hawaii basically gave him the keys to the city. When I would visit the islands he was treated like an A-list celebrity. We could go anywhere and do anything we wanted to out there. Unfortunately, this brought a lot of people around him that weren’t necessarily looking out for his best interest, a lot of yes men, ppl that didn’t care to check Colt or keep him accountable when he was getting off track. His Ex…the girl that was in the car with him during the accident was such a negative influence, just toxic and turned her back on him, just like a lot of other ppl did when she found out he wasn’t going to be her meal ticket. It’s sad.

I'm a UH alumnus and remember the Colt Brennan years like it was yesterday. He was a beautiful person who loved the Hawaiian Islands and all of us here loved him back.
I do believe that this story is important to remember him by, though. Traumatic brain injuries are something that isn't discussed enough, not just for athletes, but in general.
And like you said, Colt's girlfriend at the time disappeared after that, at a time when he needed the support the most. Uncomfortable and unanswered questions, but at least we are beginning to answer some of them.
Rest in love, Colt. We miss you. 🏝️

I was stationed on Oahu from 2005 to 2010 in right before my 2007 deployment was the 2006 season for the Warriors. I’m from Cincinnati and I’m a diehard bangles fan. But watching the community support that team, especially that year, was insane. They love their warrior football, and their high school football just as much and maybe more. They don’t have proteins, so those are their heroes for the young ones to look up to. Little league, baseball, surfing, high school and college football Are huge on Oahu! It was so fun to be there Inexperienced, Colt Brennan greatness!

I'm from Honolulu and only saw Colt Brennan on TV, but met him for the 1st and only time in October 2012. After we moved into my inlaws rebuilt house, the door bell rang, I looked it was Colt. He lost his iPhone and was tracking it somewhere in our lane. I apologized and informed him we didn't see an iPhone, but check with the rest of the houses in the lane. Shook his hand and told him "I know who you are". He was modest, smiled and said "is that a bad or good?". I told him don't listen to the media, everyone makes mistakes, but what matters is how we learn from it and continue to live life to the fullest. He said thank you for saying that. I bid him God bless always as he left. I'll never forget that day. When he passed, I was so sad. Colt was Hawaii's best college football star ever. RIP Gunslinger 🙏🏼🤙🏽

Not only for masking the pain of whatever injuries they suffered from but the euphoria they were constantly experiencing while being high. Then, when your career in college or pro is over, the free handouts stop. Then what!? UGA was #3 in the BCS the last week and #2 lost but didn't get moved up because Kirk spontaneously made up the rule that if you didn't win or play-in your conference championship you couldn't play for the national championship. He has never took that position before or since and indeed abandoned it the very next year to argue for an Ohio State-Michigan rematch. I was a hs junior here in hawaii during the 07 sugar bowl run, we were all band kids and my friends who graduated HS that year got to go to the sugar bowl with the Hawaii band and i remember being so jealous of them lol. The 90s-early 00s were magical as a hawaii local and fan of the team. Colt was a cult hero here, used to be able to pack aloha stadium 50k full easy at our peak. Colt got done dirty by the league, feel like he wouldve killed it if he played in todays day and age. The coaches back then werent receptive of his playstyle but he was just ahead of the curve imo.

Man, thats so sad how brain injuries and scarring can really affect a person. I've been a Hawaii fan since 2001 with Timmy Chang and i thought Brennan was amazing. My sister had a brain aneurysm and had to get surgery, I had a brain injury as well and have a scar on the left side of my frontal lobe. She looks the same but obviously acts different and I am now epileptic and people around me say I do little things very differently, like ill burst out in laughter randomly. Learning Colt Brennan, one of my all-time favorite college QBs, had brain scarring too (due to non-football reasons) hits really close for me. Thanks for doing this deep dive into what happened to him.

idk if its different now, buti played football from 2004-2008 4th grade until 8th grade and they used to run us so hard in practice. i was one of the younger dudes on my team first year and we'd be doing oklahoma drills running at a future d2 running back almost 2 years older going full speed and trucking everyone haha.. i had quite a few brain related injuries that you were called weak for not coming back into the game.. back spasms and the coach is just yelling and making an example out of you to the whole team!! full contact practice every single day aside from the day before a game. i think i have some lingering symptoms, i cant imagine playing through college and the pro's.. the damage is probably substantial. I revisited the Cullen Finnerty story and that scared me to death... dude was running from demons due to his brain injuries. My parents were so dissapointed i chose to not play football in HS and picked baseball instead. but looking back im glad it happened like that. if i played another year or two of football i think id be in much worse shape

Colt had substance abuse issues before, but I can gurantee you that they became worse after his car wreck. Addiction and emotional stress are part of the ball game. Your identity is taken from you. You cannot understand how hard that is unless you have been through it.

So I got off the elevator, walked into where my dorm would’ve been and started using the bathroom, then started knocking on where my other two roommates door would be and then wondered why everything looked different and noticed the numbers were a floor below mine. I took off running to the stairs. So if it was exactly the same as his dorm I could see accidentally entering, however the rest is a bit much.

This kid didn't get one offer out of high school and then went to Worcester Academy which is literally 20 minutes from where I live and he went on to get drafted by the NFL. So many athletes that reach that level and then are let go without reaching what they think their potential is, turn to drugs to get that high or mask the pain, and in this case it cost him his life.
